It's always great to tune in with you. Learn a lot and always a good laugh. At our age every other bugger is dropping dead, so you are like a mate. Long may you run
If you are from the “city of brotherly love”. This guy is that much easier to grok. What a folking talent you are sir and your humor and sarcasm are a welcome bonus!
Tenderly is one if my very favorite tunes. Thanks for playing it. My folks had a recording of Tony Mattola playing it that I loved when I was a kid. So when I got a guitar I bought his book "Play the Guitar in 30 minutes" . Started gigging the next day...whoops Mottola, knew that didn't look quite right:(
Love the channel and the laid back vibe, too many jazz guys seem overly pretentious in their presentation of jazz music and theory but you keep it real and your playing and knowledge has always been unreal! Looking forward to more videos!
It is Fascinating Mr.Jimmy. The subtleties of changing from a Medium pick to a heavy aren’t so subtle if your ears can pick it up. Thanks for sharing your talent and experience, I’ve been playing since age 6 and have earned my living doing just this. I’m 73 now still out doing it and still learning from you Sir.
I like the way you teach. Just common sense and no bullshit. You obviously have incredible skill and knowledge. I respect you for sharing that with us. Thank you Sir.
"Tenderly." I remember listening to it on late night radio KGO, San Francisco (Lucky Lager Dance Time) and KNX, Los Angeles back in the early 50s. I'd go to sleep with the radio on. Mom would come in after I was asleep and turn it off.
Your 2-hour live-stream introducing the ES-175 was great! Truly appreciated, though I won't be buying you a 175 anytime soon. That's a better person than I but thank G-d there are people like that in the wild. Be well.
Thank you for sharing your experience and brilliant talent. I will never perform anywhere near your level. But I always learn more watching you. And also, I enjoy hearing your random excessive cursing foul comments erupt in passion equal to your sublime guitar skills 🎉😊
It’s a 358 shape… You gave me a couple of guitar picks at different gigs when I asked you what type of gui pick do you use. That meant a lot to me. I noticed how worn down the pic was and I wondered why. But when I took it home and played it , it went through the strings like butter. So I also hold a pic by the same side to develop a wear pattern.
Jimmy, im so thrilled to find your youtube channel! Back in the mid 90's my friends at University of the Arts and i would come see you every wednesday at Chris's, drink beers, great times.... how about your rendition of Poinciana???
I watch quite a bit of technical stuff, and whilst I'm not a jazz player, I always leave this to the end of the day. Though I don't have much of a clue how you do most of your fretboard ramblings, It's just a joy to watch and listen, with a cig and a whisky.:)
A lot of picks come pre-beveled. I suggest that you try out some other guitar picks. I have some signature pics of yours that you sent me made by fender. Also, don’t forget to mention your scale book. I picked that up at a gig of yours. An excellent reference and system for playing the scales in all keys. Don’t give up on the Alan Carr book.
As usual another great video with lots of important, useful info for guitarists. The problem I’ve had over the years is whenever it’s time to stop comping and start soloing, if my sound sucks, it has an adverse effect on my playing…..I find myself distracted with my shitty sound, plus trying to dial it in, in the middle of a solo. My other big problem at my late age is fucking osteoarthritis. It’s affecting all my major joints and is now making its way down my extremities. In May I had a CMC arthroplasty surgery on my right thumb and just a few hours ago, a cortisone shot on a trigger finger. Jimmy, I listen to your videos pretty regularly and it doesn’t seem like you have any age related issues with your hands…..at least, if you do, it’s not noticeable in your playing. I’m not famous like you…..for the past few years I do theater work playing Broadway musicals. Because of my age they like to hide me in the pits.
I used to play in an Allman Brothers Cover band. What you learn early on is to just keep playing. Most things that bother you are completely unrealized by those listening. Even if you make a mistake..just keep moving on and it's like to go unnoticed.
@@RickMcCargar I was in a rock band in the 60’s and we opened for the Alllman Bros in Tampa in ‘69. I used to know Dickie Betts when I lived in Florida. I knew Betts when he was working with Joe Bill Loudermilk & The Playboys. He was living in a trailer in Tampa with some chick named Marilyn. Back then the Allman Brothers called themselves Allman Joy and I was in local bands that played on the same bill as them back then in South Florida.
I had a trigger finger on left hand and it was fixed with a shot of cortisone but had 4 surgeries for trigger finger and carpel tunnel surge twice, no fun getting old
@@brunoonlineschool7527 No fun…getting old sucks. This carcass doesn’t come with a manual and there’s definitely no warranty on parts or labor. I’m 78 and every time I visit my Ortho doc, he’s standing there grinning with a number 12 scalpel in his hand. I’m supposed to get a bunch of joints replaced but as of now have not moved on it. It was because, even at my age, I still get hired to do shows locally and my wife digs the bread plus it gets me out of the house…..and keeps the brain cells active trying to sight read all the shit they throw at me. If any of the local shows require a banjo, I usually get the call.
I've learned more about phrasing from listening and trying to play along with your videos than I have from just about anywhere else. For way too long I got caught up in the whole theory thing and scales with ever increasingly stupid fucking names. The moment I dumped that shit and started trusting my ears things have started to improve. Plus you are a vastly entertaining man who I could listen to talking and playing for hours. Hats off to you sir.
Hey Jimmy, if you ever get stuck on a cool tune to play, could you rip through a few bars of The Jitterbug Waltz . ... if you feel like it. That's the old Fats Waller tune from the 40's, that's been re-recorded by others a bunch of times. Always loved that tune.
If it weren’t for the super-locrian myxo-Phrygian claptrap you described in the video, half the music professors wouldn’t have teaching positions. They’d be working at Dollar General & playing music at the local Italian restaurant.
There are lots of “doors to the same room”. People organize their thoughts in different ways…whatever works for you to be organized. What bugs me are the people who insist it’s “their way or the highway”.
That Gibson sounds great. I’ve got a Howard Roberts Fusion Gibson that I can pull a really decent sound out of, but one day I’ll get a 175. Ramble on Jimmy. We love it. Till here was you is a great tune, I thought it was the Beatles probably like most people, I found an old chart and it’s in Eb. Sounds better than any other key I reckon.
I can no longer be selfish and keep Jimmy Bruno to myself i have a feeling his channel is gonna blow up. Jimny if you do, please dont change your style or way you do these videos.
At 4:01 when you added the flat 5, and then played the fast run of notes, was that your fingering from the 7th of the scale ( from the 5 fingerings). I'll slow down the video and see if I get it. Thanks.
"Super Locrian" is for kids who never want to leave school. They were good at memorizing words and spitting them back on tests, so now they wallow in the thing they got praised for. It's music, not a spelling test. I feel for Jimmy.
I'd love to find a pick that has the thickness and feel of a Dunlop Tortex 1.14 mm, but with that fine point of a Dunlop Jazz 3. If such a pick exists, will somebody please let me know. Thanks.
I'm a long-time guitar hack amateur. What I really need is some sort of structure as to how to restart so that what you're telling me makes sense. I can play a lot of songs...can hear pretty good...but don't really know any "theory". How do old guys like me 're-start'? Jimmy, what would you suggest?
Hi, when you were out west recently an older video of you was posted and at the end you were playing something I recognized but I can't find it anymore, you jokingly said it was Sonny Rollins gets blown. Do you by chance remember what it was, and if so could you talk about it?
Good information on this video. I like the way you dial in your tone. I loved the chord you stumbled across on 'Tenderly' at 4:35. Much better with the 'A' in. It really grabbed my attention...beautiful! "A 'C' super locrian...WTF is that?"...ROTFLMAO! I am still waiting to see that 'Eastman' that was just set up you told us about. I am a big 'Eastman' guitar fan. Alright, alright I'll send you $12 bucks on pay-day!
Just curious: 1. How much does the room effect your tone when you dial it in ? 2. Are you leaving the amp bright and darkening the guitar, or is it a balancing act?
the room doesn't affect the sound that much.. It's mostly the guitar but the amp has a lot to do with it.. I always start with amp flat, all knobs at 12 o'clock
Thanks for posting. I just bought a copy of your book Six Essential Fingerings For The Jazz Guitarist. It is a great comp to your TH-cam videos. Cheers from Canada!
