The purpose of the channel is to highlight the awesome trout fishing we have in Australia, in particularly the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales. I've never had much luck finding information online about the different rivers and streams in the area. Therefore I am going to head down there, strap a go-pro to myself, fish as many of the waters as possible, and share it with you all.

Fishing an EPIC river

What a great day fishing with my mate Nick. Unfortunately I submerged my GOPRO without the battery cover early in the day and damaged it. As such I wasn't able to record a lot of the action - including spotting some 4.5lb fish. The good news is I've subsequently upgraded to a GOPRO 10, so I should be able to upload higher quality videos in the future.

Epic Search for my $1500 Orvis Rod
มุมมอง 1.6K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Based on analysis of my raw footage I was optimistic at the beginning of the week that I had managed to whittle down the area I lost my rod to about a 800m stretch of river. The region then had approx 200mm of rain fall over the week, so when I finally got to the river to commence my search, the river was about 3x the size and in flood. As you will see from the footage, crossing the river was p...

I think i've watched this video about 4 times. Heading to Tassie for the first time in Feb. Bought the book "Trout Waters of Tasmania" on your recommendation. Thanks, great investment and great read. Canberra boy as well
George Daniel inspired? Or Devin Olson?
Do you fish the snowy river above Lake Jindabyne often?
Love the setup, awesome video.
dress up as big foot and go stuff your face in the feeding station in front of the photoshoot
How are you enjoying your Helios D? Which rod did you go for - 9’ 5wt?
3:24 you can see on the rod 9' 5wt. hope it helps ya
What a bastard at 7’45”. I so wanted you to nail that fish…
Nice fish P3. I never really do a fast strip in lakes with nymphs. Another thing to add to the list. Passing through Jindy on Fri. Will try to time it to stop for a flick. Pretty quiet in the mid-west. Picked up a few yesterday but seems pretty quiet, I think they still haven't recovered from the low water all summer. Not long till the skis come out. Hope you get a few more vids out before then. Cheers PP
Your "Land of the Thousand Lakes" has nothing on Minnesota. Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and it actually has nearly 12,000 lakes. It has trout streams too.
Nice vid
Nice wild river and some lovely fish. Well done!
definitely a stunning river - holds some large fish as well!
Superb - your videos always motivate me to get out and explore the wonderful fishing opportunities that we have in Australia…lovely gold bars of trout…sweet…
true mate! we are pretty lucky with our choices - still haven even touched vic yet :P so much water to choose from ! Looks like you have been busy :)
We all want to know where it is :) Looks a little lower Gungarlin like. My guess is the snowy river above Lake Jindabyne. But could be Geehi above Geehi Pondage?
Nick wouldn't be happy if I shared his spot :P
Another ripper P3. Back in your own stomping grounds. Looked like beaut water and nice browns! I'm jealous. Just back from Vic. Cramming it in now. Be interested to see where you go next month or so. Such great country you explore. Cheers PP
cheers PP, not sure if I will be able to get out much more on the rivers - keen to do some winter lake fishing though. You have much planned for end of season?
@@p3p_flyfishing Hey P3! Off to the Mitta next week then a week at the spawn run on the way home. Not much water down south at the moment, though. And the crowds on the Euc will be a problem with the north of the park shut down for the horse kill. I'm not a fan of crowds and we've been spolit down there the last few years, so we'll have to see. But yes, planning to hit up TCD a fair bit and wouldn't mind a trip or two south, as well. I'll have a look and see if I can find your contact and drop you a line. Intersted in the mid west?? Centre of the universe, you know. 🙂 I have a streamer strategy. No laughing. PP

As a fellow Canberran hardcore fisho mate love your work keep it up
Maaate. I'm glad you like twerking for your fish, but in a quote from the classics, "I do not think that word means what you think it means". I'll definitely bring a camera when we finally meet up. 🤣 Looked like a great day, one of those when an outsider might question why you're laughing and talking to yourself ... Cheers PP
I always fish the Macquarie River when I'm in Tassie. It's not the most picturesque river but the dry fly-fishing is excellent
true! it was probably the most consistent rises of all the spots i fished over 30 days down there. It's always nice to find spots that surprise you and exceed expectations.
Nice mate. Is this the Macquarie
yep sure is! accessed it from Cressy
Stunning fishing - and such clear lakes - special…
That was cool mate, lovely river!
Ha, with the way a foul hooked fish feels on the rod we should all be aiming at their bums. Videos just don't work as well, though. Does add a bit of excitement to the morning for a bit, though. I think it's greatly under rated. 🙂 Cheers mate PP
Beautiful, alright, you've convinced me I've been missing out. You've also made my mrs happy, she's been trying to get me down there for years. Next summer. That scenery is so gorgeous I'll be able to pretend I'm not too worried about catching fish... 🙂 Thanks for the entertainment. This rain will liven things up, eh? Cheers PP
I don't think you will regret it :P

It looks like Tasmania to me, the platypus gives the game away too.

yep Tasmania, AUS :)
This is fishing like a dream!
yep, definitely some of the best lake fishing you can get :)
Beautiful, I haven't seen the trees like that up there before. Awesome fish amazing weather, perfect for spotting.
yep was a beautiful grove
What size and length leader do you usually run when fishing lakes?
like everything it can depend - to keep it simple I generally just fish a 9ft 4x leader. From there I can add tippet as required, however I generally wouldn't fish 5-6x on a lake unless you are possibly fishing midges to super fussy fish.
Really good trout!
Lots of better spots than that.
That fish in close at 5:10 was so exciting - and such superb fishing - chapeau 👏🏾 - how did you hold your nerve? - I love all of your videos, and learn something from every one - double dry flies with the Possum Dun Brown - who would have though? - thanks as always for taking us along on your adventures…
G'day gadget, glad you thought the same thing! The fish at 5:10 was such a weird occurrence - I thought he would see me for sure when I was trying to retrieve my line to cast at him. I must have just been lucky to approach at the perfect angle - or perhaps he was just getting a bit old and blind :P The two possums duns were shown to me by an old fella on one of the lakes - he was kind enough to give me two of the flies he uses as well. A size 12 (possum dun) on the top fly followed by 40cm of tippet to a size 14. (possum dun) The top fly will kind of hold while the bottom fly swings around off the back of it. Gives the fish options on size. Caught on both flies but the bottom fly, size 14 got a few more. Tbh I king of wished a fished the possums duns a bit earlier in the trip - it was rare for the fish ton refuse them.
@@p3p_flyfishing How do you keep track of the Possum Duns? I struggle to see dry flies that unless they have a bit of white - which is why I have fished the Cat 3 Chernobyl UV so much recently - it is just so easy for me to see - that said, I know that I need to practice more with smaller dry flies - I do have some Parachute Adams (#14, #16, #18) in my stash, which are a lot smaller, but have some white so that I can sort of see them - can you actually see your flies or do you just know where your flies are on the water based on years of experience?
Any video that starts with the words "good fish" is off to a great start! Another spot I had to google! Looked fantastic. Did you get to weigh the big fella? I've thrown a few possum emergers into my box but havent used them, yet. Funny enough I got the idea from one of the Tassie books. Looked like a nice trip p3. So many places ... hope life is good. Cheers PP
Cheers PP ! If I recall he was a bit of 3.5lb. The possum duns were deadly - and super easy to tie. I'm keen to test them in the snowys. Just got back from a hectic trip into some rough country. Has to be some of the best waters I've ever seen - unfortunately the fishing was super ordinary. Still nice to get out into nature. You manage to get down that way for Easter with the boy and wife?
@@p3p_flyfishing Unfortunately boy wonder sabotaged the last trip by falling off his ebike and wrecking a hoof. Most inconsiderate. She who knows whats best for me is currently cruising the Alps looking for smarter men while I man the fort. Hopefully down to Vic for the hols. Your wilderness expeds are always interesting, lots of snakes of unusual size, lost rods of despair, mostly dead river crossings... I'll keep an eye out for the next instalment! 😀
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing your adventures
np - thanks for taking the time to watch :)
Nice brownies, good stuff:)
Well, that got me. I don't know where it is ... I know, I neeeeed a fishing trip to Tassie to better educate myself??? Okay, now I can watch the video, after a quick detour via google maps. 🙂 PP
Great, now I not only know where it is but have met some of it's residents. Once again P3, thanks for the edutainment. Cheers PP
I thought you would know if for sure PP :P You would love tassie
@@p3p_flyfishing Ha, no - only been to Tassie once. Too much rain! 🙂 Maybe next year. As you said, pretty hard to go past good fishing to find good fishing. Looks great, though. Hopefully a bit more rain up here in the next few weeks... keep em coming p3, I know you've got more ... PP
@@mrpoopypants9586 yep tbh the fishing was pretty tough down there - found a lot of dead fish, much smaller sizes that previously, and quite a lot of anglers - hopefully it's just an off year. With NSW/snowies fishing so well over that Jan-Feb time period, it's hard justifying heading to tassie when we have such awesome waters closer to home.
@@p3p_flyfishing Not just about the fish, though, eh? Had to laugh I thought at the start you yelled out the window "You Tassie devils". Thought you were abusing the locals on the lake, but no, it actually was a Tassie devil! ha ha.
Great content as usual. Trying for my first Tassie trip next year. Cant wait
It's an awesome spot - so many options. Worth grabbing a copy of Trout Waters of Tasmania by Greg French if you aren't too sure where to fish.
@@p3p_flyfishing thanks for the tip, Ill get onto that.
Great 👍
I was starting to wonder what happened to the rest of your Tassie stuff, I hope it's because you've been too busy away fishing. More beaut spots. On the fish, too. Pretty quiet out, been getting a few but the water levels are starting to look grim. Thanks for the entertainment. Cheers PP
Good to hear from you PP - slowly going through all the tassie footage. Just been caught up with other things lately, managed to get away a few times and will hit the rivers over the next few weekends. We had some good rain up this way, hopefully it made its way into the alps. A lot of fellas have been saying the rivers are super low and warm, pretty stressful for the fish unfortunately. Hope you are well and the knee is holding up
Love your videos!! Do you have to change your rig depending on the depth of the pool?
G'day Wyatt - im pretty lazy so I try not to change much - I generally use wax or a paint pen to mark tippet - if I want to fish deeper, i just rub some of the wax off to the depth i want or apply if I want shallower.
What tent do you use?
hey mate, the tent is a Lanshan 1 ( the "Lanshan 1" has the double wall, the "Landshan 1 Pro" has the single wall - I recommend a double wall if camping near the river due to better condensation management). You could also go the Lanshan 2 for extra room or if there is two of you sharing a tent.
@p3p_flyfishing thanks mate. I would have thought with where u go, u might have got a 4 season tent. I'm currently stuck with a $14 kmart tent!
@@danielbass2333The Lanshan is a good budget option for an ultralight tent - can get some pretty fancy/expensive ones from the US. My setup in the video is for fly fishing expeditions where I am carrying my pack all day while I hike and fish - in this situation I go for minimal weight. River season is oct-june so unlikely to be caught out by snow/blizzard conditions. For winter mountaineering, where there is a much higher chance of exposure killing you, I use the Wilderness Equipment Second Arrow UL.
Hi thanks for great video 😊👍🏻 can you please tell what’s the location ?
Nice little chunk of earth there!
Great. Another ripper spot. Looks pretty lonely out there, did you bump into any one? Quick q: Was that your phone or a dedicated gps unit? Always curious about what people are using. Cheers PP
PP it's my phone - using the Gaia GPS app, check it out. The free version is awesome. Logs all my fishing and I'll often mark spots where i caught fish or spotted monsters - that way I can always come back next time :P
Awesome videos, great casting skills...just,please, set that hook harder. Snap it like a man!
Cheers for sharing, what a lovely bit of country and a great fish to boot, thats paradise right there 👌
What size reel are you using in this video? What do you think about how it balances with your rod?
Hey, it's the Lamson Liquid 5+ . I have the 7+ on my saltwater 8wt - would be a bit too big. haven't tried the smaller option; the 5+ is great in my opinion.
Were you fishing with the rod that you lost and then found on a previous trip? That 3.5 pounder was stunning - thanks for sharing. Rob ‘Lord Gadget’ Louis
Hey Rob, yep, it's the same rod! Pretty surprised i didn't spook the 3.5lb after putting several flies past it.
Australias Largest trout?
Awesome place. Love it
Ha. Awesome. Been waiting to hear from you. That spot looks great. Off to a top start. But, now I'm going to have to get a Simms rubber band! 🙂
hah good point, the buggers would probably price it at $40 and claim it's got super rubber band technology :P the funny thing is they would probably sell out!
@@p3p_flyfishing As long as they make a goretex one. I'd hate for it to get wet. Looking forward to the rest of your trip. Got me thinking of the South, now. 🙂 Be keen to hear your impressions of the trip at the end. PP
@@mrpoopypants9586 tbh the fishing was tougher than i thought. Was hoping to find monsters however the size and quality of fish i saw were a lot less than two years ago. Heaps of smaller fish and lots of dead 3-4lb fish - saw a dead fish in just about every lake. A lot of fisherman about as well. Just fished Jindy lake and one of the rivers in the park on the weekend and was seeing 2 to 5 lb fish and not another fisherman in sight. We have it pretty good right here in southern NSW. Saying that the tassie highland lakes are stunning and it's a beautiful part of the country - def worth a visit, good fishing or not.
@@p3p_flyfishing Thanks for the info. Yeah, it sounds like the Tassie seasons are as changeable as up here. We were in the Snowies last week and the Blueys this week. Such good fishing about, just hope the water keeps coming. We had the boat on Eucumbene a while back and one day we got 8 fish over 60cm. The Snowy lakes are in rude good health. The rivers were getting baked last week but we had a bloody hilarious night on a river catching and dropping , bushing and tripping over fish in the dark. All on hoppers. Lost more than we landed. We're pretty lucky to have it, eh? PP
Crackin browns.. Makes me look forward to my brownie season come April.. Cant beat the good old cdc dries
nice! saw some good +4lbs brows while fishing a river this weekend - need to head back and fish to them while they are active. Are you based in the northern hemisphere?
can you share where that is?
Yup it's Central Plateau, Tasmania - Julian/Pillans Lakes.
