In-vitro modeling reveals how Leishmania affects liver tissues
EPI members Ana Maria Porras, Ph.D., and Peter Kima, Ph.D., collaborate with a team of researchers at the University of Florida to understand how the parasite Leishmania affects the tissues in the liver. Leishmania is a protozoan parasite that causes the disease Leishmaniasis, which is spread through the bite of infected sand flies. The team's work can help improve the study of parasitic infections by providing a technological application for understanding how different organs are affected at the tissue level. This work is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation under Grant No. CAREER 2338708.

Leveraging artificial intelligence to improve healthcare
EPI member Ruogu Fang, Ph.D., collaborates with a team of students and faculty members at the University of Florida to forecast HIV infections based on individuals' contact networks. Improving the diagnosis of HIV is a fundamental objective of the Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative because it can lead to transmission reduction. With this research, the team aims to provide healthcare practitione...
Can machine learning networks help epidemic response?
EPI associate director of research initiatives Marco Salemi, Ph.D., and EPI member Simone Marini, Ph.D., collaborate with a team of faculty and students at the University of Florida to leverage artificial intelligence in their research. Their research aims to understand what specific geographic areas or conditions correlate with high-risk populations for HIV. The goal is to implement strategies...
Understanding the role of interferons in preventing viral infections
EPI member Megan Stanifer, Ph.D., and a team of faculty and students from the University of Florida investigate novel hypotheses about the unique protective functions of different interferons. Interferons are a group of signaling proteins that alert host cells of the presence of pathogens. By understanding the difference between the types of interferons, the Stanifer Lab aims to improve current...
Diagnosing plant diseases protects Florida's ecosystem and economy
Humans are not the only ones who need disease diagnosis - plants do too! Disease surveillance, diagnosis, treatment and prevention are essential to protect agriculture, the green industry and the natural ecosystem. EPI member Carrie Harmon, Ph.D., an extension specialist in the University of Florida Department of Plant Pathology, leads the Plant Diagnostic Center. This unique service provides p...
How do antibiotic-resistant bacteria impact fish and water ecosystems?
EPI member Benjamin Anderson, Ph.D., and a team of faculty and students from the University of Florida evaluated water and fish samples collected from two water sources in Michigan for the presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). ARGs are a marker for the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that may be present in the environment. These findings will help scientists better underst...
What factors predispose someone to an increased risk of HIV?
EPI member Ivana Parker, Ph.D., and a team of students at the University of Florida utilize a biomedical engineering approach to identifying the factors that predispose a person to increased risk of human immunodeficiency virus, commonly known as HIV. By looking at HIV prevention from a global perspective, the team analyzes trained immunity through the use of machine learning and proteomic anal...
Investigating bacterial outbreaks of anthrax, Bacillus anthracis
EPI member Jason Blackburn, Ph.D., and members within his lab at the University of Florida work with local and international collaborators to investigate bacterial outbreaks of Bacillus anthracis (anthrax), Burkholderia and Brucella. The SEER Lab uses a combination of whole genome sequencing, bioinformatics, geospatial modeling, serology and animal tracking to understand where to expect anthrax...
Identifying how a fungus causes damage to the brain
EPI member Luis Martinez, Ph.D., and members within his lab work on the mechanisms of brain invasion and colonization of Cryptococcus neoformans, an encapsulated yeast causing the majority of cases of fungal meningitis. The team's research investigates how the fungus makes its way from the lungs to the brain and how the fungus interacts with cells inside of the brain. Their work aims to find a ...
Can a human virus get a cat sick?
EPI member Benjamin Anderson, Ph.D., collaborates with a team of faculty and students from the University of Florida to evaluate the potential of a human and cat strain of adenovirus to be transmitted between animals and humans. These findings will help scientists better understand the potential risk of adenovirus to cause infections between different species. Want to learn more about reverse z...
What are mosquito-borne diseases? A brief overview of Florida mosquitoes and disease transmission.
Florida’s subtropical climate and variety of habitat make it a haven for mosquitoes. As a hub for tourism and global travel, the state can act as a petri dish for mosquito-borne diseases, including those from other parts of the world. Mosquito season runs from March to October in Florida, and mosquitoes are most active when temperatures are in the upper 70s to 90s. As Florida enters peak mosqui...

MreB along with MreC and MreD are named after the mre operon (murein formation gene cluster E) to which they all belong
