I've played a bit of the Alien RPG and enjoyed it quite a bit. It definitely needs some cleaning up so I think a 2e will be worth while. I think they're also trying to ride the wave of new releases with the Alien: Romulus film this year and the Alien: Earth TV show next year. I'm hesitantly optimistic!

15:10 The why the orc license? is to have an OGL that is not controlled by any other company. It is false that they (im assuming you mean Paizo) can change it. The main difference with the OGL is that it states that the game mechanic in the work arent proprietary and therefore you can only copyright the lore, art, etc, and the written expression of those mechanics About CC vs ORC, with CC you can't license a subset of the work with a different CC license, and therefore if you want to allow 3rd party commecial derivative works that only use a subset of the work, you need to create an SRD with CC-BY and to license a your main work with CC-BY-NC or something like that With the OGL and the ORC you can do the same without having to create two works. About why creators dont want to use the ORC, i guess that because of a mix of fear, ignorance and that MOST OF THEM are already are creating derivative works of already license OGL and CC products

Luka makes some of the most interesting alternative stuff in the industry. Even if you never get to run it, it’s definitely just an awesome read through and the art being awesome goes without saying.

Also, just wanted to add, I totally agree with what you were saying about kids on bikes 2e. Free league is kind of known for refining their games, but using a lot of the same core systems. Which ends up with a very very polished game in the end, but they should probably stop calling them new editions if it's really a refinement. However I do love their games because of their polish. Dragonbane is just one of the most clean games I've ever played.

Regarding solo rpgs - have you ever listened to Tales of the Manticore? It’s a fantasy story podcast driven by d&d dice rolls. That inspired me to get into solo play. It’s not the same as playing at a table with your buds, but is rewarding in itself.

I’m not an expert, but my understanding is that Starfinder is NOT nearly as streamlined as pf2e. So this gives us, hopefully, a much nicer system.

In regards to ShadowDark I think it has two things really going for it: 1. Cleanness of rules. There are no wasted words. Everything is very straightforward and easy to reference. 2. Old school sensibilities, new school design. I think it's just going to feel so fresh to both people who play OSR games and newer modern games. I know this is stuff you probably already are aware of, but it's worth restating because a lot of people just see it as another retro clone, but it's a lot more than that. And I think it has a bit of a less is more approach, so that the gameplay speaks for itself. Anyway, obviously I think it's really good and worth a shot.

Space 1999 was an interesting show. Dont think the IP has enough fans to support it. Also, "product of the year" has to be the least inspiring award title.

If you like “choose your own adventure” books - have you looked into the ‘fighting fantasy’ game book genre? It’s like choose - but with simplified rules for combat using dice while you work your way thru the book - when I found out about these - it changed my life!!! The art is usually very OSR, simple play often using only d6s. The genre stared with Ian Livingston and Steve Jackson (UK)’s book - Warlock on Firetop Mountain. They recently did a 4- year anniversary set, easy doing a new book. I like Ian’s “shadow of the Giants”. Very solo-play focused. So so soooooo damn fun!

I'm 57 and I remember watching Space: 1999. I think the fanbase is so small it's arguable that they may have done better with their own original premise rather than this minor IP. You'd have to be my age, which means: PLus: they assume older people have more disposable income than young people. Negative: It's got sentimental value, but no one was looking for more. See, there's no calls to relaunch it.

Space 1999 does have a fanbase, but it's fairly small (though strong). The first season of the show is pretty great. The second season? Meh. I prefer the previous show from the creative team, UFO, but Space 1999 is pretty cool.

The edition thing is interesting. Call of Cthulhu is one example. I'm not going to say each edition isn't different at all, but the rules are very, very, very similar for editions 1 through 6. 7th Edition is pretty much the first major change (not that major, really). The earlier editions were more about clarification and organization more than profoundly changing the rules. I don't need an Alien second edition. It just needs a "space truckers" sourcebook, and then everything I would have everything I want or need. But I know new editions can help with money flow and I can't fault companies for needing money to keep the lights on.

man I have Alien 1e is very good there is no need for s 2e. Im still pissed they did a Coriolis 2e when the first one is perfectly fine and good. So I'm not supporting them anymore.

I like the version of the D6 system where you count rolls of 4, 5, and 6 as successes and you counted successes instead of adding together the totals.

These individual Lego mini figures blind boxes have been a thing with Lego for many many years already. The most recent “set” before this D&D one was Marvel.

Beadle & Grimms class dice sets have normal and epic versions with different dice, so probably you had the epic ones

Regarding the Lego minifigs, you can scan the QR code on the box in order to know what mini is in the box. I know this because my friends take 20' before buying any box (of the prev. series) ahahah

One thing for all of us to keep in mind is how little of a percentage we make up of the larger 5e player base. Remember that the average 5e buyer doesn't play DND. They buy the books, maybe get a campaign going for 3 sessions, then it falls apart within a month or two. That group of people are the ones buying these products, and they're the ones who will buy 5.5.

Of course fluff is enough for a setting book, why would you need more?

I swear the Modius of Pyretic Puissance is a reference to Akiro in Conan the Destroyer (1984). Conan becomes king of Aquilonia, and during the movie I feel like Akiro makes mention of his hat helping with his spells. It's been 30 years since I watched the thing, but I certainly remember that when Akiro gets in a wizard duel the resulting power match results in his opponent getting blinded.

More DCC! Great to learn about other DCC add ons. I'd love a video on how to make adventure paths. Even a series where you give a quick 'how to' to run your favorite modules. Just a few minutes give the best parts of the module, an overview, and any advice on running it. Thanks 👍

By "wealth", maybe the whole group has to get rid of their coins to use it. Since the hat may consider the wealth of the other party members to also be the wealth of the wearer.

Yeah, the complexity and "players will love this, but DMs..." thing really gives me pause. I've never been hyped for these new books, but i suppose i was starting to think of using them as inevitable, but now i'm starting to feel resistant towards them. I guess we'll see.

The updated classes look like they'd be a blast to play in a video game! But maybe less so in a tabletop game... DND '24 on the whole seems more complicated. As a DM, I'd kinda rather run a simpler RPG, like Old School Essentials. I expect that DND '24 won't have the 10 year lifespan that 2014 DND had, due to its complexity. Everything revealed so far about DND '24 strikes me as mechanically intimidating to new players. That complexity will only grow as we get more splat-books :( I bet we'll get 6e within the next 10 years and that it will be designed to be comparatively simple. Rinse and repeat.
