Alan B. Carr's, 'The Elegance of Fusion: The H Bomb's Origin Story 1920-1945' (READ DESCRIPTION)
See the complete presentation (including the film clip) here: th-cam.com/video/JDC0PPU_JRk/w-d-xo.html
One minute of the lecture has been removed by TH-cam: a video clip from the movie 'Oppenheimer' showing a group of Los Alamos scientists laughing at Edward Teller for proposing the idea of a thermonuclear weapon. Like many things in the movie, the actual history is quite different!
The hydrogen bomb is one of the most innovative, terrifying, and politically consequential inventions in history. Most accounts of the H-bomb's story revolve around the first full-scale test, conducted in fall 1952. But the H-bomb's biography can be traced back to 1920, when the concept of nuclear fusion was first imagined as a process for powering the stars. The Elegance of Fusion follows the key discoveries and the brilliant scientists who made them during the formative years of thermonuclear research. The lecture also reassesses the the nature and value of H-bomb work at wartime Los Alamos. Though often perceived as a small-scale technical distraction, dozens of exceptional scientists performed theoretical and experimental research of critical importance during the war. This effort, which was continually nurtured by J. Robert Oppenheimer, provided a firm technical foundation for the H-bomb's successful development in subsequent years.

Rare Footage of Trinity Test Tanks in Action (rescanned)
มุมมอง 1.4Kปีที่แล้ว
Specially modified tanks played an important part in the world's first nuclear test. After Trinity, tanks fired rockets into the crater area to collect highly radioactive samples for analysis. Each rocket, which remained tethered to the tank by a wire, was tipped with a scoop; these scoops dug into the earth to gather soil samples. Lead-lined tanks carried Herbert L. Anderson and other Laborato...
Project Sedan: A Nuclear Excavation Experiment
มุมมอง 1.5Kปีที่แล้ว
In 1962, Lawrence Radiation Laboratory scientists performed an excavation experiment using a nuclear device. The objective was to create a large crater at the Nevada Test Site, while producing a minimal amount of radioactive contamination in the process. This was not a weapons test, but rather a test to demonstrate the feasibility of nuclear detonations for peaceful purposes. Sedan explored the...

4000mw!!! Omg 😳
"Jackass flats" 3:40 lol.
What is more amazing is that after the hole is finished, miners go down the shaft and hollow out a test chamber. Some of the test chambers were huge, one was a 150 foot diameter sphere to investigate shockwave decoupling. It took 2 years and removed 250,000 tons of material. In the deepest holes, 50'c+ water would literally spray out of the walls.
14:10 50 inch diameter, with an 8 foot stroke. I feel inadequate for some reason.
So awesome! Where was this film scanned from?
What you've just seen was the smallest nuclear explosion in history yielding a mere 0.5kt TNT.
@Historian Alan B. Carr Good evening, thank you for the presentation. You mentioned another talk that picks up where this one lets off, could you please share a link to that? Thanks again!
This is impressive although the audio matches anything made in Hollywood 3 decades earlier!
This is so cool! I don't know where you find this stuff!
Wow never thought I would see Plutonium extrusion.
agree! love it!
I was the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) Program Manager for Particle Beams. SDIO funded the Neutral Particle Beam effort at Los Alamos National Laboratory. See also the Beam Experiment Aboard a Rocket (BEAR). I recently published a book on Barnes and Nobles on this topic “The Guardian A Space Based Neutral Particle Beam A powerful Guardian of peace. “ OSD restarted the program in 2018. The effort was terminated due to budget priorities. The Space Force has command and Control and sensors but no weapon.
Now this, Mrs. Ricardo is a nuclear warhead. Your job is to take a can of whipped cream, spray the nuclear warhead like so, put a cherry on the top of the nuclear warhead, and place it on this shelf, like so. Do you understand so far? Yes, Mr. Witherbottom.
I feel like a refreshing glass of nuka cola

Same here. 👀. Also, background music by Chicago. ;)
I absolutely love the music from these vintage AEC videos !
Its so interesting how love of numbers and music go together. Dr. Teller was my father’s boss. My dad and I are both pianists., organists, and flutests. Dad a geophysicist and I am an financial analyst. Thank you for this video.
Like to see the analyais video of them taking it apart
I love this! Thanks for posting! Perhaps next time you could include the visual of the audio track for future archiving? Keep up the good work Alan!
Although the specific impulse of this type reactor/propellant can be very high, just look at the exhaust plume of the nozzle in this and similar videos. There is virtually NO thrust. There isn't a hint of a shock diamond. Based on the visual flow stream, I'm guessing that the nozzle exhaust pressure might be at about 100-to-200-psi, as based on steam venting comparisons. Using Water as the propellant would raise the total thrust by a decade or more, and the volume of the tankage would be reduced by a factor of 100-less or more, and not require as much insulation. The reduced SI would be well offset by the weight loss and size reduction of the actual rocket.
This is a very interesting space program. It started with the KIWI reactor that had 100MW and produced 5000 lb (22 kN) of thrust. The Phoebus 1 had a power rating of 1500MW and produced 50 000 lb (222 kN) of thrust. It ended with the Phoebus 2 ( not the 2A variant) which had a power rating of 5 000MW and produced 250 000 lb (1.1 MN) of thrust. After the Phoebus 2 came ther NERVA program and was meant to actually power spacecraft but sadly they never used it. To put this into context, the current version of starship (booster) produces 69.9 MN of thrust from 33 engines, so 2.11 MN/engine
Hi Alan, this footage is incredible, priviliged to view this first hand historical record! Where did this footage come from? Many thanks
I've never seen this footage before. I did slow it down to 0.25X speed to make it closer to actual speed. It might have been my dad behind the camera.
Remarkable.
You have nice footage, Iam interested in US nuclear test mainly underground tests from 60´s to 90´s.
Wazzup😊!
Fascinating subject
The videos of hand lathe turning of uranium out there are nuts
Testing was done at the "Jackass Flats".... TIL
In this video Teller was so much kinder to Opie than when we talked briefly about 'Opie' in 1974 (Vietnam was 'semi-concluding' in 74, but divisive anger was still in the air). In Teller's later writings, he went back to less anger as he described 'Opie'. I think Dyson Freeman described Teller perfectly! ... That said, I found Teller to be very entertaining and he was VERY kind to me and the several folks at UCLA during his weekly visit from his main office in the Bay Area... In my firsthand opinion, some of the comments below unfairly describe Teller.
The entire story has been publishef in a book written by author Benjamin Labatut, entitled "The Maniac". Published in 2023. Incredible read.
Los Alamos is still a functional weapons lab yet you wouldn't know it. Well done, NSA
I was in the audience that day as a young postdoc. Thank you for posting this!
"You didn't' see graphite!"
"Your WRONG." "The meter SAID 3.6 roentgen per hour." "So it IS 3.6 ROENTGEN DAMN IT."
The chemistry that these people are explaining is some frightening frightening stuff iodine is not nice
Mouthwash.
For a second I thought this was Colin Furze’s DIY channel, and that he’d really stepped up his game!

its so weird seeing teller, yknow, like, mr. h-bomb himself, just being a sweet old man. look at his little hawaiian button-up. how can u hate this guy.
Pretty easily considering his actions
It goes pew pew pew!
Just... wow. Moments of irony abound.
This is the man who led the NRA, "pry my guns from my cold dead hands" Heston.
Finally more footage of the caisson which I first saw in the updated version of Trinity and Beyond. I imagine playing Ground Zero as they prepare the bomb.
1:35 you can see a curtains around the atomic bomb because it was very secret device and only small amount people can see it. Even for workers it was forbidden to see it.
I wonder if Helen of Bikini was either written on the bomb or caisson?
Hi. Could you upload more such nuclear test videos?
Both my father and grandfather worked there operating a drag line crane. Not sure what year
Interesting. Thx for posting.
i wouldn’t call this awesome - it’s insane - plus the people who lived and still live downwind are still dying of cancer- nuclear colonialism - it pretty much sucks
That's BS. Chemical pollution due fuels, exhaust form cars and power plants, the effects of sedentary life and being overweight are many orders of magnitude more harmful and carcinogenic than nuclear fallout of those tests.
Really cool. I saw videos about this facility, but never the metallurgy operations. Cool.
Great video. I live near the Former Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant. That process was brought here from LASL.
Entertaining as always Alan thanks for sharing.
