    Greetings from the United States! Thank you for this channel and your videos, I just picked up a copy of a book called Rutherford Park by Elizabeth Cook, and on the back of it, mention was made of an author by the name of Catherine Cookson. I got on Wikipedia and began to read about her, and it really blew me away, the story of her life, how she started, and what an incredible legacy she left, what a life she lived! In searching for some more information about her, I happen to run into your page, and I'm going to enjoy watching your reviews of some of the books that you read. Like you, books are my ultimate passion. I don't fit the stereotype, I look more like an adrenaline Sports Junkie that is headed for the nearest mountain or river somewhere, but I have always been so fascinated with Great Britain, especially from early 20th century back to the beginning of the 18th century. I just did a watch through Downton Abbey and was looking for some type of literature that would feed that addiction the series created in my thoughts, I'm hoping your page might help me in that regard. Thank you for taking the time to post this, God bless you, and I'm sure you'll hear from me again, Becky!

      @TheMyco-Psycho thank you so much! I am reading a Catherine Cookson trilogy at the moment, so I will be reviewing that ASAP. If you like gothic style literature set in victorian era Britain, I highly recommend the works of Laura Purcell. Older British history, my go to books are by C J Sansom (the Shardlake crime series) and Ken Follett (the Kingsbridge series). Would love to hear of any books you are reading and your views on them. I'm looking forward to further chats on videos 🙂

    Thanks. That's helpful. ' Magpie Murders' is on my list of possible future reads as I really enjoyed the three James Bond follow-on novels by Anthony Horowitz, 'Forever and a day' (prequel to 'Casino Royale') 'Trigger Mortis' (set immediately following 'Goldfinger') and 'With a mind to kill' (set after the last of Ian Fleming's books). James Bond won't suit everyone but if you're going to read a Bond I would recommend any of those by Anthony Horowitz.

      @dawn2424 I will say that this book is a slow burn with the mystery simply because it is so big, has so much going on and it makes the ending pay off all the better. No point rushing a great story. I'd say go at your own pace and it might help if you set yourself a reading target each day/ week so then you know you have X number of pages to go. I just finished reading the book and I came across your review (there are not many on TH-cam). This has been the 7th book I´ve read of Irvine Welsh, I really love his stuff. And I have to agree with you. Even though I have overall enjoyed the story, at some points it felt like it was dragging on, especially considering this story only has two main characters. Some parts are indeed not easy to read (I thought it was because English isn’t my first language, so thanks for sharing that thought!) And some descriptions feel overcomplicated, almost self-indulging.

    How weird (the name change)! Feathers in the Fire was my first Catherine Cookson, I read it a few years after it was first published and loved it. I'm not quite sure why that odd name was chosen as Amos, as I remember, never was a secret, although he was kept away from his father. Thanks for the great review. It's a great book, indeed. The best one of the series so far among the first five that I've read. Unfortunately books 6 & 7 haven't published in my country, yet. I don't know if any of them are even better than Troubled Blood. But I couldn't figure out one thing about your review. At 9:02 you show the symbol on the hardcover copy and tell J.K. did it again like she did in Lethal White and hide something brilliantly in plain sight. What did she hide in that symbol? What is it you show? I couldn't see it clearly and I'm very curious 😀

    • @beckybookreviews7820
      @beckybookreviews7820 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts. That's such a shame the more recent books haven't been published yet where you live and I hope they will be soon. The symbol on the hardcover is the clock that Cormoran and Robin look at which not only shows the time but also depicts star signs and solar alignments. Given in the book they have to unscramble the notes of the previous investigator who became somewhat obsessed with the star signs, all the information as to who did it was in the clock face so JK gave us the answer on the hardcover. GENIUS!

    • @EgemenUregen
      @EgemenUregen 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@beckybookreviews7820 Oh, ok. I think the symbol on the hardcover copy is the exact same one with the one on the book cover but the clues aren't clearly visible on the cover because of the rain image and book title. Thanks 🙂 I live in Turkey and I'm looking forward both to books 6 and 7 but Turkish publisher put almost three years between books, I don't know why. So we are two books behind. On the other hand the French translation of The Ink Black Heart (as Sang d'Encre) has been published just two or three weeks ago and the Spanish translation hasn't been published, at all. It seems like all countries publish Strike books with some strange timetables according to a reason. I don't know why they aren't published just within a few months like all the other JK books. And I also don't know why she or her team allow this. TV adaption of TIBH will be broadcast in a couple of months, I think and there are still readers from different countries who couldn't read a book originally published in 2022 in their own languages in 2024. It's strange, unfair and sad ☹️

    Dissolution was my favourite book of last year. When I was reading Dark Fire in February I had to stop reading for a day or two after Shardlake suffers a loss (iykyk). Unfortunately that week our dog got suddenly ill and we had to have her put down. It was hard to pick Dark Fire up again but I did finish it and enjoyed it. I am waiting for the memory of that time to dissipate before the next book because the death of my pup is now associated with the book, I can't help it. Matthew Shardlake is my favourite fictional character so I won't be able to stay away for long. I listened to a different book read by Anton Lesser and I agree, he is incredible and his voices are amazing, especially his old women.

    Spoilers!!!! I liked the fact that the book begins with the duo Strike and Robin trying to help Will get out of the UHC but when they find out that an ex member, who has been in the cult his whole life is found dead under suspicious circumstances was the thing to bring them full tilt onboard. Also when you really think about it the UHC is like a Jenga tower where no matter how well maintained and how well built the structure is, remove one piece in one sensitive area and the whole thing falls apart. The sensitive piece pf this cult is the myth of the drowned prophet and when I made that connection I was really happy that Strike and Robin took the same approach. In regards to the reveal of who the killer was I thought it was brilliantly done with strike telling Abigal that she was jealous of her sister and essentially killed her and made it look like she had drowned, pretty much in the same vein as to how her own mother died, and possibly to get back at her father was twisted. I also like the fact that when Wace meets Strike he mentions: "if you ever see my daughter again tell her, her Popsicle says hi!" could be read that he just misses his daughter, but given what happened he knew what happened and thats what made it even more twisted, but not only that, but he wanted to capitalize on it by making her The Drowned Prophet was really Effed-up. I made a short video once on the Running Grave before the book came out Predicting that Charlotte was going to have a much bigger role as well. I was half right but I also said - not having finished The Ink Black Heart - that Charlotte was going to come to Strike with a case. I also think the use of The Running Grave is brilliant when it comes to Cormoran himself in the sense that he is forty one and he is now at a point where he can no longer take things for granted and I really think you feel that in this book. I also think what you said about his leg not being mentioned rarely is interesting as Strike is also changing going from someone who enjoys a takeaway or pint of beer to someone who is urged to take better care of himself. Its really well thought out I'm sorry this comment is so long great video and I'm really looking forward to the next book 👍

    Excellent review!! I just finished the book, here are my spoilery thoughts: Thoughts: 1. It's a departure from the earlier books--we know the culprits from the beginning, it's more a question of "how" then "who". It's more about gathering evidence against the Waces. 2. Yes, there's one twist about Abigail Grover, but I was kinda suspicious about her anyway. But I didn't guess she killed Daiyu. 3. The book reads like a thriller. I felt like there are two climaxes--one when Robin escapes from Chapman Farm, and one when Cormoran confronts abigail. 4. It also felt like a Mafia novel at times, didn't it? Jonathan Wace's super polished demeanor on the outside, while you know what he is...the way Kevin Pirbright was killed, and some others were forced into suicide...it felt like Strike and Robin were fighting well organized mafia, rather than a cult! 5. I couldn't believe Robin didn't escape from Chapman Farm when she had the chance. We know she's a daredevil, but she pushed her luck WAY too far. I believe she's a more matured woman, but maybe the various things she witnessed at the farm made her desparate to bring the church down. 6. Speaking of Robin, I was also, perhaps unreasonably, annoyed that she kept dating Murphy, and was thinking along the lines of "Strike doesn't feel what I feel" etc. Strike had made a clear move in TIBH, and Robin had unwittingly given a clear denial. After that, in my opinion, it should have been Robin seeking clarification about the undercurrents between her and Strike. 7. Jo sure knows how to make me emotional. Charlotte's suicide, Strike's meeting with her sister at the end, and the last chapter...heavy stuff! 8. And that's some grenade that was thrown in the last chapter!! I hope it leads to Robin dumping Murphy!! 9. I found the book immensely entertaining, and would note that it's also challenging. With so many characters and ex-members of the cult, I struggled to remember who's who a couple of times, and found the x-ray feature of the ebook very helpful. Readers have to pay attention while reading Strike novels, and that's a good thing. Couple of questions: 1. Why didn't Jonathan Wace ever remove the axe from the tree at Chapman Farm? Jiang knew where the axe was! Didn't Wace know? Didn't Wace realise it could prove The Drowned Prophet never drowned? 2. The illusions at Chapman Farm were well crafted, but wasn't dressing up little girls as the Drowned Prophet too risky? Little girls talk. And Will Edensor had observed this! Wouldn't other intelligent members of the cult have seen through this trick?

      So glad you enjoyed it. To answer your questions, I think the answer to both questions is Jonathan's power of manipulation. The tree was out of the way in a place people didn't go because he had told others not to go there. Plus it was something that you wouldn't find unless you were looking for it. As for using the girl, the young are easily corrupted and silenced and I am sure a few threats combined with his manipulation tactics would silence anyone. Fear equals obedience in his world

      @@beckybookreviews7820 Makes sense. I also think Wace was also very overconfident. Has the release date of the next book been announced yet? I have an ominous feeling Ryan's going to propose to Robin

      @NamasteBbooktube oh completely. He's a cult leader who no one can touch or stop. He is very overconfident that he is almost God like. No news on the new release date yet, only the title which was released a month or two ago. She usually releases books six months or so after she announces her titles so I think October and it will hit at the build up for Christmas in the publishing world

    Thanks for this review Becky. My friend, whose opinions I really value especailly when it come to books, gave this book a thumbs down so I thought I'd see what you had to say before finally deciding that I won't be reading this one. I really like Richard Osman as a personality and recently loved a review he gave of Trustee from the Toolroom by Nevil Shute. Now, there is an excellent author I'd highly recommend to you!

      I like Richard too, but I can't stand his writing, unfortunately. I've not read anything by Nevil Shute. Will look him up. Thanks for the recommendation 🙂

    Hi Becky, I'm sorry to hear you were so unwell but am happy to see you on the mend again. I thought of you on a recent trip to Kilkenny city when I found 'Rooney' by Catherine Cookson in a €1 box of a second hand book store! Needless to say, it came home with me (originally published in 1957, my edition is a 1972 print)

      Thanks, I am glad to be on the mend too. I've not come across Rooney. Do let me know what you think of it once you've read it 🙂
