I have replaced pedal power with electricity!
มุมมอง 1204 ปีที่แล้ว
My initial attempt at shredding plastic using the Precious Plastic shredder was to make a pedal-powered shredder: th-cam.com/video/lYLzgVKLlGQ/w-d-xo.html I have finally upgraded the shredder so it is driven by an electric motor. Much more effective than the pedal powered approach let me tell you!

    Hello! I was wondering what material the thing you fastened the ring on the drill press is? And how you got it to stay fastened?

    • @UpcyclerSimon
      @UpcyclerSimon ปีที่แล้ว

      Heya. I simply made a couple of wooden circles that were just a few millimetres narrower than the outer diameter of the ring. They had a stepped in section that was a fraction smaller diameter of the inner hole of the ring so that when I put the ring between them there was some of the wood sitting inside the ring hole holding it in place

    Nice job on the pens! Do you friction fit them to the brass tube like brothers make did when they made a plastic slim line pen?

    • @UpcyclerSimon
      @UpcyclerSimon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried friction fitting but I found that it bent the end of the copper tube that was being forced through the plastic, which resulted in a poor fit when assembling the final product. I now use plastic specific glues (eg - www.selleys.com.au/products/adhesives/minor-repairs/selleys-power-grip-all-plastics/)

      melting PP or LDPE can be dangerous. HDPE is one of the only plastics that has a low melting point and hard to burn, therefore doesn't emit toxic fumes

    Great video Simon, thanks! I feel like I'm heading in the right direction when I see you using a mold like that... my first one was about the same, but melamine scraps and clamps... feels so low tech but early days for me have been a lot about creating the 'building blocks' for making stuff. Now I have a press, I think I might upgrade my mold with some bolts this week and hunt around for a local turner who's keen to have a go at making a pen... you've inspired me :-)

    Hey there... I am from India and am a mechanical engineer student building the plastic shredder for my final year project!! I have already fabricated and made the shredding chamber using laser cut mild steel because it was a lot cheaper and I managed to get all the material in about 630 Rupees or 9 USD and got the whole thing laser cut for 2400 Rupees or 34 USD and now I am looking for an electric motor but I am really confused at this point because I have options like getting a 2HP electric motor, so do i really need to get a gearbox or a reducer to make the machine work properly or is it possible to somehow get high torque output from a motor using some electrical components integrated in the circuit of the motor ?? Also, the price of the 1 HP electric motor with a 1:70 reducer is 20000 Rupees which far exceeds my budget for this project and the price of 1 HP electric motor single phase 1400rpm is 4000 Rupees but I think this motor will be completely useless because the torque output of that motor is very low and won't shred much plastic, to begin with... please help me out here cause I am new to the forums of precious plastic and don't know my way around!

    Hi Simon, superb machinery! Do you think this could work as a food shredder? I am trying to design and build a bike powered food shredder for composting at the Mullumbimby Community Gardens. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks

    • @UpcyclerSimon
      @UpcyclerSimon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Peter, I am sure that you could shred food with it, but I imagine it would be too expensive. You would need to get stainless steel blades to prevent it from rusting, and that is very expensive (>$600).

  • @poosmate
    @poosmate 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Exactly what I'm looking for and for the same reason! Thanks for sharing. Could I ask though, why do you go from pedal to an axel then up to drive the shredder? Would it be easier to drive the shredder directly from the pedal cog? I don't understand that bit. Well done! Poo

    • @UpcyclerSimon
      @UpcyclerSimon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heya, I went with the pedal to the rack then the rack to the shredder to help with gear ratio. Even shredding think plastic like milk bottles is surprisingly hard work. If you went from the cranks directly onto the shredder I think you would find it too hard to pedal.

  • @daveartandmusic
