I shred plastic but I use a wood shredder and chipper. I have to say I'm seriously impressed with your invention although it does look like a lot of hard work! Well done all the same.

This is so cool! Not only do you recycle plastic but you can burn those beers off too no problem, it's a win win!

This is an interesting video and shredder. Did you make any improvements since then?

Hi Hans, I tried a few things to get it to work successfully including adding a fly-wheel and improving the gear ratios but in the end I gave it up as an unsuccessful experiment. Here is where I am currently at... th-cam.com/video/d_6kiNuszV8/w-d-xo.html&t=

    This really needs a flywheel

Exactly what I'm looking for and for the same reason! Thanks for sharing. Could I ask though, why do you go from pedal to an axel then up to drive the shredder? Would it be easier to drive the shredder directly from the pedal cog? I don't understand that bit. Well done! Poo

Heya, I went with the pedal to the rack then the rack to the shredder to help with gear ratio. Even shredding think plastic like milk bottles is surprisingly hard work. If you went from the cranks directly onto the shredder I think you would find it too hard to pedal.

Hi Simon, superb machinery! Do you think this could work as a food shredder? I am trying to design and build a bike powered food shredder for composting at the Mullumbimby Community Gardens. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi Peter, I am sure that you could shred food with it, but I imagine it would be too expensive. You would need to get stainless steel blades to prevent it from rusting, and that is very expensive (>$600).
