    Good points but I would say the part about hands separate is much more controversial than the part about sight reading. Some teachers swear by learning everything HS, some are adamant that you have to start HT and only do HS practice when needed.

    I'm currently learning the most difficult Chopin Nocturnes (there's some incredible challenges in those pieces) and aside from harmonic analysis and practicing the technical aspects, to memorize them permanently, I try to keep in mind - Chopin wrote every note with intention, and I practice that way, trying to breathe life into every detail. It's the emotive effort that helps me remember the piece forever. I must never take a single detail for granted, I must make sure that I never fail to correct an error in the moment, with the fervor of a man possessed.

    Some excellent quality uprights are better than average grands. If you buy a small grand, for example, versus a professional calibre upright, you'll just have a lesser instrument in a fancier cabinet. I've just made this decision comparing a Kawai G-10 with a Kawai K600. The K600 has a far better bass quality. And the Kawai K800 substitutes in recording studios -- upright in place of a grand -- all the time.

    I pulled up your account because I didn't want to forget to thank you for a great tip that I hadn't seen anywhere else... I have to go to work and don't have time to watch this one now... I've seen read so much about moving my arm to aid in all sorts of technique improvements BUT not to help me play notes will a p or pp dynamic. I was having a lot (!) of trouble playing softly in the stiffer lower registers of my vertical. I was already pressing the keys with a angle towards me but adding just a bit of arm made it really work!

    If you can't play softly, your piano is probably in need of regulation. Many are.

    • @UUpianoman
      @UUpianoman หลายเดือนก่อน

      Truth! I am both a pianist and a piano technician, and in particular, the let-off is critical for the ability to play softly. Let-off is how close the hammer gets to the string before it is disconnected from direct mechanical connection. Too close and the hammer blocks, robbing power, and too far away you lose control. Adjusting this one parameter has often left my clients considering me a genius.

  • @peter5.056
    @peter5.056 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Let me just say this. I spent a significant amount of time, when I had an a Kawai RX-7, without pedal I would practice in such a way where I could hear the dampers lift off the strings, but never let the hammer hit the string. And now, I can play extremely rapid pieces pp, without any effort.

    The most obvious possibility to what exactly this is, jumps out to me, from the list of facts given, and another thing known about Chopin. First you say that experts say the sheet music manuscript writing is consistent with other known sheet music in Chopin's hand. Next it's a waltz, and the chord progressions and style of this waltz sound typically like Chopin. Third it's dated to the early 1830's, and this is consistent with when he was active as a composer and penned other waltzes. And it has his name on it. What you didn't mention is that Chopin's waltzes typically have at least two contrasting themes in their course. This does NOT have that, and is quite short. So, the most obvious guess? Chopin simply started a waltz or mazurka, and simply never finished this one. (i.e. it was a section of a waltz or Mazurka he intended to write and publish-- a melody before a second other melody-- perhaps in A Major? -- could be composed or added to it then possibly the original tune restated, transformed ). The poor man likely may have mislaid the paper before it got mixed up with a morass of other papers. Composers lose things, as do the rest of us.

    It is not dissimilar to the work of Julian Fontana, Chopin's friend & copyist. Fontana was also chosen by Chopin's family to go through his work with a view to them being published posthumously, which has always seemed rather like a betrayal to me as it goes completely against Chopin's wishes. Fontana also lived in New York for a number of years & it is known that several copies of Chopin's compositions written out by Fontana have been erroneously displayed as original Chopin manuscripts in America. The signature isn't in Chopin's handwriting but it is not unlike Fontana's, the way the manuscript is written would have much to do with how the school determined it should be & Fontana & Chopin were at school together. Fontana's manuscripts are very similar in appearance to Chopin's (but neater with few erasures), so although it would be wonderful to have a new Chopin composition to enjoy, there needs to be a lot more investigation & less wishful thinking done yet.
