As a police officer he should know that only a very small percentage of men ever commit any act of violence against a women. A mother bear will attack if their babies are close by and they feel you are threatening their young, they will attack if they are startled, they will attack if they are hungry. A women won't be able to reason with them, they won't feel empathy for you and you will not be able to fight them off. Also the statistics about bear attacks does not take into account people who just go missing who might be eaten by a bear but who's body was never found. If a women is in the woods being chased by a bear she would be praying that a man shows up to save her.
