    I would have gotten the genetic testing after the first child. And it would make sense that at least some of it is learned behavior, especially if you have two other older children. My ex girlfriend's daughter (from previous marriage) has high-functioning autism at 8 years old. She is also diagnosed with Oppositional Defiance Disorder, which her mother didn't want to believe or admit to. The daughter is extremely violent when angry and it doesn't take much to provoke that. Unfortunately, she has harmed an animal, which is actually a reg flag factor that can determine if a child will have psychopathy later on. Autistic children don't typically understand the emotions of others because they lack a certain kind of empathy. They demonstrate "cognitive empathy" which means if they see a child crying, they may ask why the child is crying and rely on an adult to tell them that child is sad and so the child will know now that the child is sad. But, they don't have "emotional empathy" or relational empathy. That is when you see someone suffering and you almost feel what they feel because you can "relate" to it. You want to comfort or help that person. There is also a lack of impulse control and sometimes an oscillation between being a bully and then playing victim. One reason why I broke up with her mother was because every time her daughter hurt the feelings of another child or hit someone, she always used the autism as an excuse to justify it...which itself is kind of narcissistic. There are some interesting findings on connections between narcissistic personality disorder or traits and autism. See the YT channel "Prof. Sam Vaknin". He is quite an expert on Cluster B, and origins of disorders such as ODD, Conduct Disorder and its ties to NPD, Borderline, and Psychopathy.

    Autistic father here of an autistic daughter, we noticed the signs at about 2 and a half years, but took till she was 3 and a half before we could get off the waiting list for an evaluation which diagnosed her as ASD level 2. She's 5, just about to turn 6 now, and I do wonder if she'd still get an ASD diagnosis if she was re-evaluated today, not because she's not autistic, but because she's so much higher functioning. In fact I'm pretty sure if they'd have let us bring her in when we first applied she'd have gotten a level 3 because initially she was basically dead to the world around her, you could wave a hand in front of her face or make loud noises around her, call her name, anything, and she didn't react to you or her surroundings. With that background out of the way, my daughter's never had issues identifying relationships (as far as I know) but she does CONSTANTLY ask questions about why people respond with emotions to things. Like we'll watch a movie and she'll ask me "why is she making that face?" and I'll explain because she's sad and she'll ask "why is she sad?" even though something just happened that would make any kid sad. She's curious about emotions and particularly the way people express them, but doesn't seem to understand them or what leads to them. Daughter definitely had speech issues and still sees a speech therapist, though in her case the issue was always far more with her receptive language then her expressive. She was always great at repeating us, echolalia from a young age, but I don't think she even really started to understand basic words till she was nearly 4. Daughter has always had good eye contact... if she's paying attention to you. Again, for a long time she was living in her head, so she didn't give eye contact but also didn't acknowldge your presence at all. These days thats no longer an issue, so with her good eye contact she's often very "passing" as neurotypical. Daughter is TERRIBLE at social interactions with strangers and always has been. I think she used to try, but no adays she just keeps to herself mostly when we're at a park or in some public space. My wife used to say she could always tell our daughter WANTED to interact and be friends, but just couldn't seem to figure out what to do when another little boy or girl would come up to her and want to play. The only kid she really plays with these days is her male cousin of similar age, and they still have a lot of awkwardness and friction. We ended up taking our daughter out of preschool and home schooling her because of a great GREAT many issues. One such issue is that they had her in a special education class so she was also picking up a TON of bad habits from some of them who were self harming or having intense meltdowns in the middle of class every day. She was also the only verbal child in the class at that point which felt like it was actually causing her only just budding speech skills to stagnate and even deprecate. At this point, though, she speaks really well, still makes good eye contact, can interact socially with people she knows. She stims a little bit, has sounds and textures and stuff like that which can trigger her into an overwhelmed state, and has both occasional autistic meltdowns, meltups, and autistic burn out when we've been spending a lot of time outside her normal comfort zone, but its possible for some one to spend significant time with her and not see any of that and then question her autism diagnosis later, which I must say to any non-autistic parents reading this, please PLEASE never do that. Feel how you feel, but invalidating an autistic persons diagnosis because "they don't look autistic" to you is almost always harmful, regardless of your intentions.

    That's so interesting about so many of them reaching milestones early, because my ASD son gave me his first real smile at only 3 weeks old, and turned over at 6 weeks, and said his first word ("hi!") at 8 months, but I never connected those things with his autism. My son experienced regressions, such as losing vocabulary, starting at about 12-13 months.

    So I guess a dozen years (and counting) after the sequencing of the genome autism COULD BE caused by defects in some complicated and imprecise but oddly specific multiplicity of affected genes? What in the environment could cause such a strikingly similar thing in so many different kids? Who in their right mind believes an astronomical unlikelihood over simple neglect? The way you know sociopathic mothering is responsible is by the absence of even fake concern they could have accidentally caused it. It's quite clear that because of their developmental delay autistics can develop personality disorders in early adulthood. BPD is the obvious sequelae of untreated postpartum psychosis in ASD. Which explains the behavioral heritability within families people who aren't very bright call "genetic"

    This really makes me sad that you basically have to prove to the doctors that she has autism….why is it so hard to get a girl diagnosed?? How have they not created proper evaluation tests for girls? So frustrating. I’m having issues with my daughter and we are wondering if she has autism. She’s 6, has ADHD, anxiety, ODD. Takes Prozac which has been life changing for us. But she still struggles and it seems like she’s masking. However she has different symptoms than your daughter…:she has no problems with speech and she loves imaginative play. She struggles with handling frustration, having meltdowns when something is challenging, and socially struggles as well. Her judgement isn’t where it should be. Idk….it’s so hard 😭

      It is frustrating that you basically have to prove yourself. My younger daughter has really amazing imaginative play but would get stuck in the same game over and over or she parrots what she watches. As my kids age up I see they all struggle with anxiety but it isn’t as obvious in some as others. One of my doctors that evaluated my kids said when you start getting all these diagnoses you kind of have to look at the larger picture. A lot of those issues can fall under the autism umbrella.

    "something going on" is not necessarily autism. I feel a true case is easily noticeable; getting to age 7 with no diagnosis and being in public school is a sign, IMO, she is not autistic or barely autistic, if that is a term. Kids do all sorts of things, anxiety may produce some of these. I believe there are more "cases" diagnosed, not necessarily more cases per population.

    I’m a 9 year old girl (almost 10), and I do believe I have symptoms of autism. Especially trouble in speaking. But I don’t really know how to tell my mom like, “Hey, so I’ve been noticing signs of autism in myself, can we try and go somewhere to diagnose me or see if I have autism or not?” because I feel like that would be awkward, and she would question why I randomly started talking about autism. So I was wondering how I should tell something to my mom without making it really awkward?

    • @navigatingautismwithdani
      @navigatingautismwithdani ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely you should speak to your mom and let her know your concerns. The best would be to have you and your mom speak with your pediatrician, as they can further refer you if they think a further evaluation is needed.

    We know now that girls on the spectrum show slightly different symptoms. Girls may learn to mask their symptoms as they age bc they want to be social.

      @@deb9ragorton742 Believe me when I say I DO know what you are saying, and I understand. I have lived this hell for over 6 decades. My issue is with the terminology used by the creator of the video. Autism is not a problem, it is a difference. When people ask ‘what is wrong with you?’, there is nothing ‘wrong’, I am just different. Is someone with black hair wrong? Someone with green eyes? No, they are different. The ignorance of those around me, misdiagnosis, mistreatment, being ostracised - you know I could go on - is the problem. People telling you what is ‘wrong’ with you and trying to fix you. Autism doesn’t need fixed, and in fact you will know it can’t be ‘fixed’, but what can be, and should be, is the attitude of others who expect everyone else in the world to be the same as them, and can’t give other people some grace. Those who have a public platform/forum, such as the creator of this video, should not be using negative terminology. It simply perpetuates what society already thinks about autism and rubber stamps the belief and use of those words. There is nothing wrong with anyone - we are all just different. And we should learn to live with and accept those differences. I hope you can find some peace ❤

      @@cblaney3931I think your looking waaaaaay to deep into what she said don't you,we all say things differently that's all,as you say about hair colour etc everybody is different,she just expressed words differently,I would probably say the same as her if I'm honest,I do get what your saying your right it's not a problem per say but it's a problem non the less,it's very hard work taking care of an autistic child,very challenging on every aspect of your life and it takes over your life,all I do is protect my son all day everyday from any form of negative impact but its so impossible to eradicate all issues,it is hard on relationships aswel coz we can't go out anywhere as a family as he has melt downs so we spend 0 time togehter anymore,for me it's not a problem I don't see it that way but it's a problem for my partner,he says I need a break etc but I can't do it,I don't want to leave my child alone with someone else,he needs me not anyone else and if I was to leave him with someone I couldn't rest and enjoy myself coz I'm not there to protect him,your comments make me think even more now that people still look down on autistic people and makes me want to wrap him up in even more cotton wool,think before you speak next time as you have offended so many parents of autistic children,at least this mum is trying to do something more deeper

    My 2 yo is suspected to be in the spectrum because 3 of my nephews have autism and learning disability. I dunno about speech if she is really delay but the last evaluation came out quite good. She just have this moments when she say stuff nobody can understand. She also hates vacuum or any equipment with loud sound but isnt to the point that she will be so upset. She throw tantrums but will only last for like a minute. She also do hand flapping when excited but she dont do it randomly. We got evaluated for speech this past week and will get the result a month from now. Hopefully it comes back good.

    from an autistic: 1) i didn’t even watch the video past a min something because i read the bio. 2) you are not an “autism mom” unless YOU are autistic. stop making your child’s disability YOUR personality. 3) we can speak for ourselves even if it’s not vocally 4) “what your child should have” every person is different. just because your child is autistic doesn’t mean you know every autistic person. so no- these aren’t all things you “should” have.
