Grand Canyon National Park (Hermit-Boucher-Tonto Loop Trail)
Mid- December last minute trip, Marcos and I decided to thread the weather window and attempt this little-traveled route. Some snow to navigate below the rim and some sketchy scrambling due to a washout. Steep at the beginning and then right above the Boucher Creek camp area. Easy and picturesque day 2 and camping at Hermit Rapids right on the river. Experienced some back spasms late in the afternoon and had an uncomfortable night but pushed thru the pain and humped it up and out the final day. Overall, an incredible trip with amazing views and hiking with Marcos made the trip even more enjoyable. Thanks for an awesome couple of days!

Day two of our epic Labor Day weekend adventure. Another incredible weather day. A 4:30am start, so not much good video of the trail or boulder field. Just be aware of when you should veer left to reach the steep scree slope climb (1000') at the southeast end of the amphitheater. We encountered many mountain goats which made the morning even more awesome. The final approach to the summit is mai...

Two 13ers included in the Colorado Centennial list (Top 100 Highest Peaks). 11 miles RT. Climbing in August, the weather was exceptional. Some bushwack navigating up to the boulder fields. The haul up to the saddle was loose scree and talus (especially tricky coming down while tired, with sliding and unstable rock). The route up Ice Mt. fairly straight forward. The class 4 crux was a bit sketch...

Original plan of a 60 mile section hike from Wolf Creek Pass to Weminuche Pass turned into a 43 mile hike with a bailout at Squaw Pass due to an injury. It was still a 5-day trip but we didn't want to take any chances up in more rugged terrain. We will be back! Side note: The amount of snow travel was a bit unexpected and brutal, and was a determining factor in the cause of the knee injury and ...

      Yeah, it can, but average temps are lows in the 20s to highs in the 50s. Winter can be a great time to hike there with far fewer people. Just watch the weather, keep your vehicle in top shape, and be prepared.

That area between Cherokee lake and Squaw Pass got my knees hurting also, but I managed to get to Weminuche trail before the blisters on my soaking wet feet got to me! Starting early is great advice! Thank you. I have done 10 Colorado fourteeners, but not Long's. Regarding the Narrows section, it looks rather scary. I have heard everything from it being terrifying, to being overated such that you could fit a car on it. How narrow and exposed is the worst part? I have wondered if anyone has used belay/rope protection on the Narrows?

    • @BacktrailVentures
      @BacktrailVentures ปีที่แล้ว

      No need for any technical equipment. The Narrows is just an exposed ledge. The true difficulty of this route is the distance. This causes exhaustion (coupled with any altitude issues). This makes concentration and foot/hand hold placement very important when on any mountain with class 3 or higher rating. Exposure can also wear on you mentally if you're not used to it. Weather is another big factor many do not take seriously. Getting caught in a storm on Longs Peaks can have serious consequences. Always try to summit before noon as mountain weather often turn for the worse in the afternoons. Otherwise, the route is literally painted on the rock for you. As long as you're in good physical condition and have some mountain experience, you shouldn't worry too much. Have fun and be careful. Thanks for watching.

    Back in the early 90's I took my two youngest kids from Whitehouse to the Buckskin confluence. Those were the days when not many did this hike nor did you need a permit except overnight at trailhead (?) My kids were pooped when we got to the confluence so they stayed there while I ran/ hiked fast for a half hour or until the bike bottle was half full. Came to a long pool (cesspool?) turned around and hurried back to my kids. I had planned to return to the White House trailhead later in the afternoon when the shadows of the walls gave some relief from the sun's July teeth. They. talked me into leaving at 1pm which was a big mistake in the heat. As we started back I realized our calculation for water was past the fail safe point. Told kids to stay inside some covey holes /caves next to the dry Paria while I went back to old suburban for water. I was a bit dehydrated, limping from a bad knee so stopped to rest a minute. Suddenly I couldn't remember from which direction I had come and which way I was headed as the canyon walls looked the same. In this minute of indecision I saw some birds way off to my right maybe a mile (?) away soaring. I decided to go to my left and kept limping along. Shortly I turned around to see a large bird just gliding steadily downward toward me. I was transfixed and remembered that California Condors had been placed in Paria Canyon. In seconds this huge black bird buzzed me no more six or seven feet above my head. I actually shuddered in fear. It took a turn to right , began flapping its wings and I watched it fly back to its buddies. I was dry mouthed from that so drank the last half cup of water. To my surprise my knee was fine from all the adrenaline. The wingspan of the condor was impressive- maybe 9 or 10 feet. White ring around its neck. I've encountered bear in Yosemite, moose in the Uintahs, a coiled 5 foot long rattlesnake in Coyote Gulch but by far the unique experience of being buzzed by a condor in Paria Canyon tops them all. Besides the beauty of Buckskin that's the memory that stands out. And I'm sorry for the inconsiderate jerks that always seem to be out in wilderness to ruin somebody else's night sleep.
