- The great Lionel Barrymore describes the 1935 "Labor Day Hurricane" to gangster Edward G. Robinson in the John Huston-directed Warner Brothers film "Key Largo." Starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

This is one of the greatest scenes from Key Largo. Edward G. Robinson dominates the scene, pacing nervously as the hurricane rages outside, and Lionel Barrymore is his equal as the stark voice of reality. Claire Trevor richly deserved her Oscar for her performance as the lush, clinging girlfriend of Johnny Rocko. I want to see the entire movie now!
My very favorite part of The Movie! No one can put you in the middle of the 1935 Hurricane like Lionel Barrymore!
If you're looking for reassurance during a storm, never ask the old guy: "How bad can it get?"
Haha! Yes!
yess lol mass destruction lol again
Especially one who hates you and everything you do.
Classic acting! REAL actors. Great casting. All gone now.😊
Never gone as long as the film lives on.❤
Wonderful movie! One of my favorites-- especially during hurricane season!
Have you seen the 1937 film, "The Hurricane"? It starred Jon Hall, Dorothy Lamour, Thomas Mitchell, Raymond Massey, Mary Astor, and John Carradine, all gathered on a lush tropical South Pacific island that unfortunately "had the bad luck to be born in the hurricane belt."
If you liked "Key Largo," you'll love "The Hurricane." The final special effects of the hurricane striking the island are unforgettable!

@@ShroomKeppie I read somewhere that even to this day they cannot duplicate the storm scene!!
@@ShroomKeppie I forgot about that one! Okay, now I'm going to go find it! Thanks!
Bogart loving it..chuckling at Eddy G
This is one of the top ten movies of all time for me. If you haven't seen it , do. Good vrs Evil.
Loved this. First saw it years ago when I was a kid. Remember thinking that I hoped I'd never see a storm like that in person. I moved to Florida to retire. Guess what. Ian came through. It was pretty traumatic is all I can say.
This ensemble acting and the editing make this scene a gem. Could any actors of today equal this? I don't think so.
Actors and actresses back in the black and white television/movies era had too much range because of no technology to help in certain areas so it made their abilities so vast that the ones today could learn a lot to deepen their range by watching their movies
The dynamics of the face of evil (Edward G Robinson in his best role) opposed to the invisible power of a hurricane - all observed by the silent alert presence of Bogert, Bacall❗️
It’s the day after Labor Day 2018. We’re getting tropical storm Gordon along Alabama and the Western Florida Panhandle. Sustained winds of 70mp, the barometer is 29.5”.
Whenever there is a hurricane I think of this movie. “...get the oil lamps” and “Moanin’ Low”, and all the other great quotes and acting, great effects. Marvelous film, terrific post! Thanks for your facts about it.
One of the leading movie of golden era.Great direction.photography n performances of Edward G Robinson,Barrymore n great Humphrey Bogart.Truly speaking Robinson dominated they out the movie.Still love to watch this classic movie.
I always thought the old guy was spinning a yarn just to get at Rocco. Turns out he was telling the truth, he just polished it up a bit!
Brilliant idea and execution.
My favourite since the sixties.
This came on TCM a few days before Idalia hit SC. It was great timing! I always liked Rocco’s sensible line: “800 guys washed out to sea? Nobody would live here after a thing like that happened!” Hilarious!
Old Man Potter rules
Jesus they way he describes it, its like a damn horror film.
Cot dayum... no wonder Bogie fell for Lauren Bacall. Look at this woman. That's called class.
You should see them in their first film together, To Have and Have Not. She's 18. Wow.
Class? More like a homewrecker.
@@karenmessina4361 I had absolutely no idea.
@@ShroomKeppie the book is my favorite Hemingway
It was during this scene Bogart realized he realized Rocco was vulnerable and Bogart would be OK
"You don't like it, do you Rocco, the storm? Show it your gun, why don't you? If it doesn't stop, shoot it."
ILL SHOOT IT WISE GUY BANGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
You dont know?...I thought you were a wise guy!...Yeah!...I thought you were A WISE GUY FROM WAY BACK!
it is like the USS Indianapolis scene from Jaws. both very very good.
The storm had sustained winds of 185 miles per hour, with gusts up to between 230-250 mph.
Humphrey Bogart sees something that scares Edward G Robinson's character the hurricane and gets that smirk on his face Ahaha I got him now
Control is his primary asset when that's gone he is exposed as being a coward
Why, with just the expressions on Humphrey Bogart and Claire Trevor's faces, can you tell that they know that Rocco is afraid? Great acting in a fantastic film. The reality was that Gangsters in those days controlled large parts of cities thanks to the happy corruption of the authorities. My second favourite Humphery Bogart film after The Maltese Falcon.
Movie Wonderfull 1948
what he hell stupid kind of comment is "add quality captions please." i could read them perfectly. if you want better captions, make them yourself. it's bad attitudes like that that have ruined this country. this little film is not a work of art to be criticized, it's informational and i think a lovely thing for somebody to do. i thought it was great. i love that scene, those actors are all so great, you can immediately tell that good guys are all in on the effect was having on robinson's character's nerves, and barrymore's character just a little exaggerating but believable. such wonderful acting. and thanks for putting up this fascinating video with great facts. i learned something, and now i can go and learn more about the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. thank you!
Bogart never had to say a word....1:10.
What a dinamic cast. Bogart & Loren Bacall are soooooo compelling. Edward G. Robinson is great & his posse is in other Bogart movies. They switch roles alot. Bartender in one movie then something else in the next. Check out the movie To Have and Have Not.
Amazing 🙏☀️
Well!!!
Hollywood ganz groß. Meisterhaft inszeniert. 😇👍
The Winds, sounds like a freight train!
Time for a remake! Faster, stronger, sooner.. Heat Bombs mean a catagory 1 to Cat 5 in a day. Trauma, drama, popcorn.
Hank Azaria said he based Chief Wiggum off of Edward G. Robinson. It shows.
Whoa! This movie predicted Hurricane Irma! 😲
Is that a hurricane or an earthquake, why is the lamp swinging and the glassware falling off the shelves? 😂😂😂.
Lack of building codes. I'm sure the whole building was shaking from the winds.
barrymore's pants are up to his chin. hahaha. here's a little known fact...simon bar sinister's voice was modeled after his. now that you know it, you can't un-hear it (unless you don't know who simon bar sinister is).
Rocco was a coward !
what category hurricane was in the film key largo?
There was no Saffir-Simpson scale back then, but it would have been a Category 5.
@@ShroomKeppie I suspect that the Hurricane in the film was a Category 3 but the one that they're talking about in 1935, was a real one...the strongest one in American history.
Did Eddie G ever shat upon his pants... as the champagne glasses fall off the shelf... big blow coming in.
ADD QUALITY CAPTIONING PLEASE
That's not "captioning", it's "exposition."
I THINK THE BLACK RAVEN HAD A BETTER STORM.
