Overbiking VS Underbiking - Can The Spur Go Full Enduro?

In this video I take the Transition Spur and put it up against the Transition Spire on the same trail. Each bike gets one lap at race pace to see how they compare on a trail that the Spire is pretty optimal for and the Spur in theory should be pretty under powered on. The results may surprise you...

This Trail Is Super Awkward! Pipeline- Mt Fromme
I purchased a spire Alloy and I am having some issues regarding switching to a rear Coil Shock. How much do weigh? What pound spring are you using?
@@user-oi5ik2ev9l I weigh 160 lbs with riding gear. I am running a 400 lb spring on a rockshox coil shock with 2 out 5 clicks of the HBO (last 20% of travel becomes more progressive to prevent bottom outs). Compression is fully open and rebound is pretty much almost fully open. Just a few clicks to slow it down a touch. This puts me at about 30% sag and I’ve never felt a bottom out. Feels amazing. I ran air for a few rides recently at prefer coil by a lot.
@@LoamerMTB thanks! I am 185 pounds and I’m riding a DVO Jade X coil shock with a 425-500 progressive spring. 170psi on the bladder and rebound set half way (14 of 28 clicks). Feels great on descents, but Kind of feels like it might bottom out on moderate jumps… I tried the next spring up (475-575) but apparently it is too much for my weight. I am a bit lost at the moment.
@@user-oi5ik2ev9l If you have a few bucks to blow you could give the next spring a try. Might be a bit less sag but if it feels good and prevents bottom outs it might work. Is there a compression setting on your shock? Could try firming that up a bit as well.
@@user-oi5ik2ev9l I miss read that. If you’re already a on the spring above your weight and still bottoming out I have no ideas. You could try a rockshox with the progressive coil and HBO but that’s an expensive upgrade. Honestly I might just run the air shock the bike came with. It’s pretty badass and you’ll be able to dial it in perfect. I just personally prefer coil but if I was bottoming out I’d just run the Fox float X2. It’s a fun setup. Can boost on that thing.
@@LoamerMTB there is a 3 position lever (open, mid, closed) and an air bladder. I got the next spring (475-575) but it feels really awkward… with little preload it is hard to match both suspensions for a bunny hop for example.
You climb for an hour!?!?!?!?!?
Sometimes 2-4 hours 😂. That’s the price you pay for dropping 2k+ feet in a single lap.
now wait untill you try Mavens.
Only if I’m forced to with a complete build at some point 😂
@@LoamerMTB Haha, the Mavens are seriously good. I've never used brakes before that i've had to order smaller rotors after using big ones. its just mental They are like saints on steroids
Man that look awesome.
Perfect conditions on some fun trails!
Just call it what it is. an Ebike.
Thanks for clearing that up for everyone 🫡
Sick run dude. I am just getting into the downhill riding at 53 years old and you can really learn just from watching experienced riders run a trail. awesome... worth a Sub. Cheers!!
Thank you! Enjoy the riding. What bike did you get?
@@LoamerMTB @LoamerMTB Thanks, I have gone old School to start and see if I am able to handle it, picked up a like new 2009 Norco Shore 2. Bike was never seen a mountain trail rode lightly in the badlands of southern Alberta Canada, 9 speed x2, all origional setup. The Kenda Tires still have the nubs on them.
Dude, solid riding! Those Saints sound like a win!
Thanks! Gotta get you back on this on a lighter bike.
Cool video. Thanks. I can get away with flats on rough trails on a long travel bike. But on a shorter travel rig clippies give a lot more control… and likely a better time.
Spot on! My feet get knocked around alot more on the Spur. Clipless would be nice.
I recognize it but it has really changed since I rode it (and the rest of Seymour) from '99 to 2010. Looks beautiful (stone work and ladders/skinnies) Nice riding, boys!
Props to you for riding the gnar all those years ago on 26” wheels!
Man what a gorgeous day!!
It was a beaut!
I have an XXL spire. Can confirm. It is a long bike. But. Because it's so long? It makes front wheel pivots way easier
I don’t fully understand the logic there but it does pivot well!
I haven’t had the nuts to hit that last drop on oriental 😮 nice shradding Paul!
Thanks John! You def have it! Hits smooth with a bit of momentum.
I got XT everything on my new cube action team 160 the breaks are incredible have to agree with you there! How do the saint's fair to them in an upgrade, Bigger calipers or pistons or something? I want to mullet mine with My DH forks always ran DH forks on my bike's so feels abit weird looking with the fox 38s single crown just now first emtb to try one didn’t like it to begin with but 2nd 3rd ride love it cant go back to my old bike now! Was out Sunday on normal kona process was bored out my skull it was so slow 😂
Not totally sure on the difference. Might be a bit of a stronger bite than the XTs.
Nice vid. Paul! We will have to rip some Chuck laps soon!
Heck yeah dude. That Repeater is gonna crush laps in the Chucks.
What trail was this? Love the city lights in the distance. Going to pick up these lights for fall/winter, thanks!
This is Oriental Express in Bellingham, WA. It’s on Galbraith.
Cool video! and a great trail, its way more difficult than it looks on camera ( rode there around 2018-2019 ) As far as the bike travel debate - always an interesting one. I think the questions is are you looking at your ride in terms of fun, comfort or performance ? Most people only measure timing... that's important if you race, but otherwise not as much. A shorter travel bike as you mentioned will give a faster feeling even if the times are slower, it will pop better and usually corner better with a shorter wheel base ( from the same brand and same size compared to an enduro bike ) . a longer travel bike will feel more safe and controlled which might be better for some riders. In terms of performance, I'd say with a less skilled rider the Spire will be faster, with a skilled rider the times will be very close and maybe even faster on the spur - and if you get a pro racer on that trail, who can push the bike to the edge, the spire will again be faster. My fastest descents are with my hardtail, just because I want the suffering to end ;) Also riding a Sentinel which is a good in between.
Your entire comment is spot on. I was only focusing on speed and capability in these last few Spur videos. I will totally admit I am back to riding my Spire all of the time again. As fun as the Spur is the trails around here are just way more comfortable to ride on the Spire. A Sentinel would probably be a super solid spot to land for a one bike setup for the local. I think if I lived in Colorado or the Midwest I’d be riding the Spur a lot more. It’s super fun but when things get gnarly sure it can handle it but my back hurts 😂
Where JKW wrecked himself.
Dang yeah I remember seeing that vid… that was a bad one.
Such a fun set of trails. So well balanced between flow and some tech
That was super fun ripping that with you! You had those lines dialed in quick!
I have the 2020 kenevo (same frame but old tcu) with a fox 38 180mm front and both 29 wheels. The bike sits a bit higher than with 275s but plows trhu stuff like a blast! Im used to do 2000m+ elevation rides and the bike shines. I suggest you to try, a single crown fork with a 29 wheel. It behaves more like a Levo and less like a DH bike.
I keep hearing good things about the mullet or full 29 Kenevo. I do love the dual crown tho…
you were safe at second 🙅🏼♂️ 7:46
Maybe this is a sign I need to take up baseball 😂
Ha! After my first major mtb accident in thirty years of riding last year I wasn’t sure I’d ever go back to mtb. Sold my longer travel, fast bike right away. Mostly healed up now but in order to take it down a few notches I got a Spur. After only two rides on it I’m shocked as to how capable it is. And “unfortunately” I’m riding way faster overall. Thanks for the review.
Exactly my experience 😂 Now I’m doing the same moves without the travel to bail me out.
The riding, the lighting, the follow cam, such a sick showcase of Double black and double down! and Sean is wicked on those corners and pops, holy cow
Thanks Corbin! Sean was really boosting those hits for sure.
Over the last couple of weeks I've finally started to feel great again (concussion in May) and its wonderful...Really helped following LoamerMTB twice before this video and the dirt was sooooo good
You guys are rippin!
Looks like you have too much traction up front.
Ha bad combo for sure. Mega grip in the front and ripped off knobs in the rear.
Great rip down a classic! Ya might wanna toss on one of your several tires around the place bud! 😂. Glad it was an uncomplicated crash. It was cool seeing the exact bike that I just ran on these trails maybe two weeks earlier. Ya’ll need some rain no doubt.
Raining this morning. Dirt is gonna be premo for a few days!
Great video I’m considering getting a specialized bike. May I ask what trail that is you’re riding on the North Shore?
I like to ride Cypress and Seymour. All of the footage in the vid is south of the border. The janky tech section is on Double Down in B’ham.
@@LoamerMTB thanks for getting back…are there trails that are smooth and flowy like this video on the north shore?
Nice turn there bud!
I’d love to, kind of an Eden out there in the PNW!
❤ chuckanut
maybe you have, but I've always thought the 130-140 range is perfect for all types of riding, better then a full on enduro bike or full on x-country bike...they can be one bike to do it all.
I totally agree. Just because I can do it on my 120 bike doesn’t mean I want to. Sometimes the Spur just beats me up. A middle of the road do it all 130/140 would be so much more comfortable.
Drop!!🎉
Ripping send! Was cool to run this again.
You crushed it!
Absolute shred!
The professional videography really tuned in this shot.
That’s some heavy trail man, nice work!
Thank you! Gotta get that bike out here sometime!
such a dope entrance to a really dope trail!
ive got mine two days ago, the bars are a bit low compare to my trail bike ,did you change yours ?
No just running the stock setup. I do run all the spacers below the stem to bring up the bars a bit.
@@LoamerMTB ill try that. Thx!!!
wait till you slap diff forks on there, itll feel even beefier
Best review I’ve seen
Those roots are narly 😳😳
What’s the height gap for the large frame?
Looks like it’s roughly 5’10”-6’2”.
Sick fender. What is it
It’s a Ground Keeper Custom. Super sick designs.
Had mine just over a year.. Still the best thing I've ever brought.
It’s a great bike. Having a blast for over a year!
Reminds me of some of the trails in Rotorua NZ. Thanks for sharing
Rotorua looks amazing! I need to make it over there.
Wow, so mindblowing forest and trail, I just love it !! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
The PNW forest is pretty special!
That ride look's rough bro
Amazingly awesome trails bro !!!
North Slope is so sick!
Sorry is that an e-bike with a double crown fork?
Yes it’s the Specialized Kenevo.
@@LoamerMTB weird I’ve never seen that before
It’s cool tho
My favorite local bike park! We love to do super fast laps there all day. That's Melisa at 6:00.
Heck yeah place is awesome! Melisa rips! 🤘
I see you around Galby with your e bike. Eyeing the spur or a smuggler to complement a patrol. If purchasing again would you go spur ?
Nice! Yeah Galby is super fun on the ebike. Cool to zip around and ride a ton of stuff. Thats a tough one! I’d say if you’re planning on buying just demo both bikes from Transition and go up on Galby and ride a good mix of tech and flow. Quick way to feel the differences. You probably already know but they’ll put the demo payments towards your new bike purchase. See what bike feels better to you. Haven’t ridden the Smuggler so hard to say but maybe a bit more travel than the Spur would be good in the PNW assuming it’s still snappy and poppy like the Spur. If I had more cash to burn I’d consider putting a Fox 34 130 mm fork on my Spur. That being said I’m super happy with the 120 and will continue to run it as is. Just feels a little rough on some gnarly stuff that it’s not really meant to be ridden on anyway.
140mm/150mm full sus is a sweetspot, but i love 120mm full sus short travel, agile and so fun
There is something special about the 120s!
