Where are the master controls in the new version?
Hi! and they should be in the character rig group. If you click it in the node view and press the show controls (the orange icon) they should show up. If it doesn't work you can message me on discord and I can see if I can find the problem.
Nice video
thank you! Your animations are great btw, do you mainly do traditional animation?
Awesome video! I really need to start blocking my scenes more effectively hahah Do you like using the "create steps on" tool to make the animation on 2s? I feel like it's easier to change things using that instead of creating individual keyframes for the whole scene
hey! thanks:) and ya It usually works pretty good and its nice because it keyframes every peg layer on the rig. Sometimes I find if I do it manually some pieces don't keyframe for some reason. But there are times where it glitches out and messes up things in z depth. Then its alittle annoying haha
Very well made, man!
thank you! The full rig is a little bit of a mess haha, but I think I will post it for people to try out soon
Great video! I would recommend to use Hold Timing node for putting animation on 2s. its not destructive way to do it in case you wanna go back and change something in frames.
interesting I have actually never used that node before. I will try it out and let you know how it goes.
wow amazing fabio
@@crisarias6318 hey thank you!!
I use skewing a bit for overshoots and stuff. This process you showed off is a really great way to add overshooting and eases that is gonna be awesome to do now. The "create keyframes on" button is also wild I had no idea harmony had such a cool tool.
ya my supervisor taught me that one and it really works well. Its cool because you can customize how much you want the different parts of the body to overshoot and settle as well. Haha ya that also is a big timesaver! How long have you been animating in toonboom for?
@@fabio_gioffre im actually a senior at UVU we talked a bit over a teams call one time haha Our program mostly focused on rigging and production pipeline. In our senior year here im the groups Director for a short film we are making as our capstone project. I like learning as much as I can in order to help my team make something really amazing.
@@playme676 oh hahah ya I remember! Nice, how do you like directing? You must be learning alot.
Greatest channel for cutout animation imho! Keep it up, please!
hey thank you, that means so much! I'm glad you are finding the videos useful. Let me know id there is anything specific you want me to cover next
Your videos always teach me something i didn't know, please keep them coming. Thankyou for your handwork
that's awesome to hear, thanks for watching them:) I tried to show the most important steps, let me know if you have any questions
@@fabio_gioffre Thanks so much! 😊 If you can, would you consider doing a small series or even just a video on making animations for 2D games? Something simple but with your rigging and animation tips would be awesome! It’d be really helpful to learn how to approach, build, and animate better for games. There aren’t many videos on this topic using Toon Boom, so it’d be super valuable! 🙌
@@bigdamnhero2297 that is a great idea! I am currently doing some research on animation for games so I will keep you updated. Are you thinking of making your own game?
@@fabio_gioffre sounds super exciting, can't wait honestly 😄 and yes I kinda am working on something on my fee time 😊
@@bigdamnhero2297 very cool! can't wait to see how it turns out
Great content as always, man 🔥
thank you! I'm glad it was useful. Blocking can get pretty boring so I tried to keep things engaging.
Thank you for making such important videos! I really hope more people will watch it! I'm currently a trainee on animation project, cut out in Harmony, and it was exactly what our lead told us to do, but i get it more clear now thanks to you!
@@lexizdead hey! That’s great! How are u liking it? And I’m glad the video helped:)
@ I do like cut out animation now, and even decided to make my first short in cut out too! I will try to accomplish it in 3,5 months :)
@@lexizdead Nice! that's awesome, what is it going to be about?
@@fabio_gioffre About a little nerdy Shrew and his friend Mole, who are trying to catch a bee and escape from Shrew's work-obsessed dad who wants them to be at school. About how sometimes parents forget that work and study are not the most important things in their children's lives and sometimes they should allow themselves to return to childhood. @lexizdead hey that sounds great. A very interesting idea and important message. Good luck!
Great video as always!
@@jbishop72 thanks dude! Ya I had to split it into 2 videos. I ant to do a few more of these with more complex shots
Though I don’t use toonboom but I get the idea. Thanks and come back soon
nice, what software do you use? And are you more of a traditional animator or cutout?
Wow this is such a useful video! I never know how to approach blocking poses in toon boom so this was really insightful!
@@solarpunch333 thanks I'm glad it was useful! Ya I think blocking is the most important because it makes the animation easier. There is going to be a part 2 where we finish the animation
Yay we will have a Wacom giveaway =DD
haha I am actually trying to work something out with them now. I will keep you guys posted:)
I’m a 2D background artist who’s been trying to break into animation for years, and I’ve noticed that applying to online job boards rarely (if ever) gets a response. There’s an LA-based studio that I want to reach out to; I’m going to try this approach with them tomorrow. Thank you for sharing this, Fabio!
nice! ya let me know how it goes. From my experience its always best to try and communicate with the people behind the job boards. Linkedin is pretty good for that. Do you have a portfolio?
I still prefer procreate. Too bad Procreate not available for android users .
Yes I feel the same way. In my opinion procreate can do everything in a better way. I liked how Sketchbook was free on desktop, but I think you even have to pay for it now
Thank you so much for this tutorial 😇🔥🔥🔥👍
no problem! I want to make an updated one for 2025. Let me know how your rig turned out
OMG!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU SAVED ME!😭😭😭 i though i already lost my 1 week of work!
I'm glad you got it all back! was it for a school project?
@fabio_gioffre it's for my job thank you so much again!😭😭
Hey Fabio ! Where do you find freelance for Rigging? There’s practically nothing on upwork .. what should I do or where to look for it ?? sorry a lil out of topic question.
Hi! good question. Linkedin is a good place to look for small and large studios looking for rigging work. Also on the toonboom discord there is a section where people post jobs that they need to fill. Ya I have never had any success on upwork and fiver
@ Thank you so much Fabio ! I’ll check it out and join the discord too! Thank you for sharing!!
@@Neutralneuu nice, do you have a rigging demo reel btw?
Idk if u will see this comment cuz it’s a year later. But is the psd file the one that goes into ur photos app? I got an apple pen and iPad for Christmas so I am new
hi! i think the psd will end up in the files but if you save as a png it will be in the gallery
Is it possible to re use an animation with another character (with the same peg layers) in an automatic way? Without replace peg layers one by one?
for it to work it would have to be the same character. But you could add a new peg and resue the animation on that. What are you trying to reuse exactly?
@@fabio_gioffre For example. "Arm-P" parent of "Arm-D" and "ForeArm-P". Then "ForeArm-P" parent of "ForeArm-D" and "Hand-P". I save the 3 peg layers in 1 template in the Library. Then, in another character with the same hierarchy, i import the template, and i change the 3 pegs in the other character with the 3 pegs template. But its time consuming. I don't want to save the animation with the character. Only animation
Damn it's really useful
ya I hope it can help the next time you make a rig
I was actually gonna ask something similar a while back. I made a rig from your tutorial series and then used it as a template for other rigs but when I edited the new rigs and imported all of them into the same scene they all used the same colour palette and the master controllers didn't work (the deformations were random and not what I created in the MCs). I think it was because I created the original template with the master controller as well, whereas I should have saved it without the MC. Haven't got around to trying it without the MC yet but saw this and thought I might as well ask. The colour palettes thing is still unclear anyway... Probably have to colour each rig from scratch or something
hi! ya palettes and master controllers are always abit complicated. But ya you would need to create a completely new palette for each rig, this recolour method just helps speed up the recolouring process. For the MCs, I would have to see the rigs to get a better idea of what is going on, but I think as long as teh master controllers are in character group it should be fine.
@ nice one thanks dude!
@@jonmarkdoyle ya let me know if it works
thanks for this bro
no worries! I actually have a bunch of updated rigs on my gumroad now that are waay better than this one:)
Is it possible for us to create a walking animation, for example, and then store it in Master Control, like the action in Moho?
@@animationlife1241 yes you can store the frames in a master controller slider. You can basically store any animation in the master controllers
@@fabio_gioffre Really, I have never seen anyone explain this before on TH-cam. Is it possible to explain this with a video explaining making a walking or running movement and storing it in a slider? or any ideas something outside the box that has not been done before? I appreciate it very much Fabio

@@nyogrson1 Hmm that's strange let me look it up
@fabio_gioffre no need --- user error. Thank you!
@@nyogrson1 oh ahha ok cool !
Thanks a lot finally i got to know about it
hahah hope it was helpful. you can post anymore questions you have about them
Bake WHAT!? WHAT!? was not aware of the static transformations functionality!
@@haven_art haha ya I'm pretty sure u can use It to lock anything to a position. Not really sure how heavy it makes your rig, but it think it's usually fine
Love this
@@jbishop72 ya we tested it out on a live stream awhile back. It's actually so useful.
It's great to know these can be modular as long as naming convention is followed! Always thought they were grouped to the drawings themselves, but this could save a LOT of time if done correctly! Fantastic tip!
ya its a huge time saver. I personally hate doing the head tilt turnarounds so if I only have to do it once I am all for it. Try it out and let me know if you run into any issues.
Lol how easily bendable is
@@Jaderixx haha it’s stronger than I was expecting.
How you add OGL Controller to a deformation points? I tried but cant move any points with it
@@youtubentotodaynononon you have to copy and paste the function link from the deformation point x and y coordinate to the ogl controller. I can't remember if I showed it on the video
@ oh thank you. bever knew what those thongs for before that. openned alot more options in toon boom now
@youtubentotodaynononon ya they are really awesome. I actually forgot about them until today
@ ya there is so much u can do. It can get alittle more complicated but it’s fun to experiment
@@fabio_gioffre im trying to get few curve point be controlled by one handle while other points to be controlled by another but they all just stick in one point for some reason
lol I found out about this on my first week of rigging, I just felt there was a way,and tried it out 😅
haha nice! that's the best way to learn but just trying things and seeing what works! How long have you been using toonboom ?
How do I start out making a "site map" [horizontal rectangle] -- for a property, say, 150ft x75ft and make the boundaries -- then include a structure(s), trees, bushes, etc.? For iPad Pro 11.
hi! sorry I'm not exaclty sure I know how to do that. You would proabably have to convert the ft to inches to makes sure the dimensions match up. But I am not sure their are premade structures that you can add in sketchbook. I think you would just have to draw those.
Valeu mano, tu é foda.
no worries! thanks for watching:)
Fabio that was super awesome ❤
thank you! I'm glad you found it useful. Let me know if you end up using it in your next rig:)
how to change colour of the port?
good question, there must be an option in the settings but I will check
nice i like it
hahaha thanks! did you try it out?
Set your sketch or ink layer from Normal mode to Inverse Alpha Mask (this allows you to see through said sketch/ink layer over on the layer below it [your mask selection layer]). On your mask layer, you can now clearly see edges on both side of a hard ink or brush stroke, which let's you choose if you want the selection mask to be on either side of a stroke/line without having to adjust opacity levels on either layer. When finished, just revert the top layers mode to Normal. I'd recommend labeling your layers so you know what they are in case you wish to toggle them off to avoid selecting content on them later on. I do this with rough sketches, guide lines, perspective point/lines, etc.
hey thanks for this great tip! How long have you been using sketchbook for?
@fabio_gioffre I've been using sketchbook since it's initial release when it was part of Autodesk. Nowadays, it's work a lot like photoshop in terms of layers, if you're on the desktop version. What about you?
@@Ink_and_Motion_Studio oh nice, and I used it more when it first came out as well and it was a free program. I haven't really used it since they started to charge for it. I honestly feel like the developers kind of stopped updating it. How do you like using the newer versions?
@@fabio_gioffre given that it doesn't have a ridiculous price tag like other software, I didn't mind shelling out a 1-time purchase for premium features and updates. I only don't like that it's only available from the MS Store. I'd prefer a standalone installer since the store version prohibits accessing the install directory for plug-ins use or other possibilities. I do like that it's pretty stable now and is very versatile compared to the mobile device versions. Plus you have to pay for it seperately on each platform. I would more feature for animation on it though.
Can't explain how grateful I am my dear man! You've just saved me two weeks of hard work!
haha no problem I'm glad it worked for you

Is available layer limited for Sketchbook PC like on mobile? My tablet could only hold 140 layers for 1600x2000px image. My computer has 32GB in it and I'm tired of paying Adobe for Photoshop
I don't know if it has changed since then but I think its around that for desktop as well
@fabio_gioffre thanks!
Is this feature available in Town Boom Advanced
hmm i don't think so, since you need a node view for this.
