A retired guy and his lovely wife, just trying to make their way in the world with only her wits and his sense of humor to guide them.
My Filipina wife who retired as a technician from the American Tech industry, is the brains of the operation. Myself, a 30-year military retiree (Navy SEAL and Army Special Operations), and retiree from private industry, provides the pithy comments and light banter, to keep things interesting. We live part of the year in San Diego California and the rest of the time in the Philippines.

Baguio Philippines the City in the Clouds
มุมมอง 6K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
We spent a few days visiting the famous mountain town of the Philippines, Baguio. It holds a bit of memory for my wife, having visited as a child in the mid-1960's and myself for having been too lazy while living in the Philippines, to visit in the 1980's. Oh well we both finally made it and had a good time, in spite of no skiing!!
Philippines v USA Shopping Mall Comparison
มุมมอง 2.3K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
An indicator of how well an economy is performing is to view the conditions of its shopping mall. Vacancies, crowd sizes, product availability go a long way to show how a middle-class population is growing or shrinking. Watch the video and you can see just how well the Philippines is doing and how far the USA, specifically San Diego California, has fallen behind.

Well we made our way further South, traveling to La Union and San Jose from Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. I was hoping to see the well talked about surfing in the city of La Union, only to be met with flat surf. We were a little surprised but it must have been an off few days.

Great, but sad comparison. Thank you for doing this. I am half-Filipino, half-American and this is really sad.
@@Scamander1417 yes po, you are very welcome! If Americans would just adopt the resilience of the Filipino people and never give up, never surrender, America will pull out of this mess we’re in!
Thank you for reminding folks of my country’s history!!! ❤❤❤
@@wahinehine yes ma’am it’s always important to remember where we came from to not repeat the mistakes of the past!
OMG! Totally on both end of the spectrum, one closing down stores while the other one is thriving and still opening new stores.
@@MowTVeee sad but true my friend. California, where we live part of the year has definitely changed and not necessarily for the better!
@@Ncollins99 Well, I guess everything's online now in the US.
@ they have online services here too and because transportation is cheap, more delivery drivers than you can imagine. Folks in the Philippines are just WAY more social than average Americans. They actually seem to enjoy being around people, unlike back home in the states (California for me).
Is that grass behind you? I’m nosey.
@@shibby_travels it’s turf Ivy, I am on the hotel roof top pool area. That explains the white man tan (red burn) he he!
Wow I guess you’re right, the one Typhoon you filmed last month in the Philippines (Kristine), was enough for one trip. Since the we’ve had two more roll through Luzon. Stay safe my friend and see you and your family in December!
Nice
Wow, very nice. Having been born in the Philippines and always remembering Makati as a place for only for ‘rich’ people it’s amazing to see that even today not all is perfect. As you mentioned, the future improvement of our country lies with young and educated. ❤
@@wahinehine it’s still a beautiful place, so full of energy. Unlike a ‘planned’ city like BGC, Makati has had a looong history of stops and starts that holds some area as ‘stuck’ in time because of the expense of updating aging infrastructure.
Thanks for doing this! A lot has changed but I remember Glorietta and Greenbelt the most hehe
@@shibby_travels such a great location and clearly receiving quite a bit of attention for Philippines government investment. Many wonderful cultural exhibits, showcasing the Philippines diversity. Lots of foreign money in banking and development. Yet too many poor left off in the shadows, unfortunately like many crumbling cities in the United States and Europe.
Phillipines is nice however the pollution is bad wear your mask save your lungs 😢
@@AllthingsFoodieTX good point
Philippine Malls look amazing! It looks like something you’d see in Tokyo!
@@andrewguerra9343 they (Philippines) have definitely gotten better over the years. As with many developing nations if they play their cards right and develop a stable free market economy they should do well. Their biggest challenge is corruption and a lack of trust in their government.
Baguio country club and Camp John Hay , Cafe in the sky are the places I like in Baguio . During Amihan Baguio 9 Celsius but the coldest in Benguet is Atok which is 0 to -1 Celsius
@@ReyvenBergado-tf2sc Thank you for that detail, I didn’t know that. And yes the weather was absolutely beautiful, particularly in the evening when everything is open and everyone is walking around.
Don't look at as the house going up its actually the dollar going down.
You should be happy - I don't get it - It is what it is...
@@robertjnavarro just a commentary on California home pricing. I sold the house in 1996, two years after buying it and lost $10k because of the then crappie California housing market. Easy come easy go. Folks younger than 40 need to be reminded that homes aren’t always guaranteed money makers.
My grandmas 40K house is 1.2mil now
@@Bree-d8o crazy, right!
I work in Temecula and that’s expensive already! 😂

Beautiful construction! So I have a question, you said the 1500’s, so was the church built then or 1710?
@@wahinehine great question! So the Spanish Augustine order in that location of the Philippines was founded in the 1500’s. The Spanish occupation of the Philippines lasted more than 300 years. The church itself was started in the late 1600’s and completed in 1710. Spain funded the construction and the times being what they were and the taking account of distances travelled it took a while.
Lovely location!
@@lorenacollins8343 oh oh ma’am
Not just in California…i live in a small town 45 min. north of Montreal (Quebec/Canada)…the first house I owned I sold it 142 00$ in 2002 now it is worth 550 000$ just 22 years ago…before the covid crisis houses that were worth around 550 000$ are now 800 000$ in just 4 years…crazy and very sad for those who want a home but can’t afford…but also for those that their home increased because here we pay municipalities taxes upon the value of the property…exemple : the taxes that were 4000$ a year are now after 4 years at 6000$ a year..and it’s not even in California but a small town up north Canada.
@@msbebelle07 wow I had no idea, thanks for the insights. Sad to see this housing craziness is all of North America!
Wow I went there once as a kid. Much more crowded now than in the past.
Nice!
Yes ma’am it was an interesting experience
Im in Vista CA which is not far away and our apartment just got bought by a company from LA. I am "lucky" because I havent moved since 2011 which makes me kind of grandfathered in. Rent in 2011 was $1075 Im paying $1725 now which is cheap. People moving in are paying $2800 because these people renovated each apartment with newer products. I hope these people who bought this place go bankrupt but they probably won't. Businesses shouldn't be able to buy homes and apartments because then average people cant afford to buy their own home.
@@ibanezrg320fm I am glad to hear you’re set rent wise and yes the prices are definitely out of hand. However I am wondering who could possibly even afford buying an apartment complex if not for the wealthy and or a business? In addition to paying to renovate said apartment complex.
So sad!
What a mess Mother Nature can make!!
@@wahinehine yes ma’am ❤️

How does driving in the Philippines compare to driving in the USA hehe
@@shibby_travels great question! In congested city areas it can be a challenge since folks don’t really pay attention to stop signs and traffic lights. It pays to be a ‘little’ aggressive to nudge your way ahead of trikes and jeepnies. Of course when the police are there everyone plays by the rules. In the rural areas, providences, it’s actually very relaxing. Being able to go where and when you want is so much better than waiting on trikes, busses or rented vehicles!
