PyKiln Touch Interface Sneak Peek!
I've designed a simplified touch interface to control your kiln if you choose to use an M5 Stack Core 2 to control your PyKiln. The tiny 320x240 touch display makes it a challenge to design an intuitive user experience. Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas to improve the design.

Better Feeder Tray and PCB Holder for Lumen PNP
มุมมอง 2.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I designed a better tray feeder and PCB holder for the Lumen PnP kit. These 3D printed parts make it easy to swap out your circuit boards and trays of parts so you can use OpenPNP to populate your PCBs. It makes use of 0.75" binder clips to hold the feeder trays and PCB holders in place (affiliate link): amzn.to/3I95Bgk Download the 3D parts here: www.prusaprinters.org/prints/150059-lumenpnp-cl...

I've spent a lot of time prototyping digital kiln controllers on several different MC platforms. All SSR controlled. Having installed them and supported them on half a dozen kils run by technology illiterate potters(not a dig, just a fact), I quickly came to the conclusion that these type of contollers are far better off being designed to install at the wall plug as opposed to on the kiln. This forces many physical design considerations but also take away the need to dig into the older kilns to try to co-locate the SSRs near the element junctions, thus creating many heating issues that I could never get ahead of. I've worked on one "kiln" from the 80's that had external hotspots in the 300C range! So I changed to a design strategy that looks a little like this. Use the existing kiln wiring, pin the kin setter on and/or set the dial temps to high. Then build the controller to install on the wall, with the kiln plugged into it. A small internal fan is enough to deal with the SSR heat produced and the only long haul is the thermocouple attachment, which can be tied to the main power cable. I'm wrapping up the PiZero2 version and will be uploading it and the designs to GitHub soon.

Why don't you try the other ELP camera that has 4K60 with USB3 and HDMI output ? The HDMI port should be able to handle true 4K60. You're not going to get 60 fps over any USB port even if it's USB3.

I'm debating on whether to get the Mokose, ELP or Arducam (preferably with the Sony IMX starvis sensor, or similar low light sensor), to connect to my Android phone with the app "USB camera", and use as a bodycam and dashcam. I was going to use a low light USB webcam to connect to my phone, but figured I'm better off putting out the extra $$ and getting a low light variable focal lens USB camera. It will come in handy. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best camera that fits that description.?

The newest Mokose UC70 firmware is stable for me. The former firmware was not. When you upgrade firmware, you get the option of naming the camera UC70-1, UC70-2, or UC70-3 by selecting a one of 3 firmware files. This makes it easier to add 3 cameras because you can see which camera is which. I use the 1/1.7" 12MP 3.2mm f/2.0 cs-mount lens, which is almost as wide as GoPro. I wish it had a lower aperture, f/2.0 isn't enough light and is noisy in most low-light rooms, but it looks really good with more light. I also really like the Mokose C100. Get the one with the 85-degree lens for an M12 lens, the ones with varifocal lenses have a built-in IR cut filter and you can't use M12 lenses with them. Also, check out the Mokose C200. They have a new optical Zoom camera, the UC90A, which is a 1080p IP camera with HDMI and 10x optical zoom.

I haven't dove into this project too much but I've been gathering my stuff to build a kill and controller I'm undecided on raspberry Pi or ESP 32. My main question is why are there all these projects using k-type thermocoupler instead of the thermocouple that can handle ceramic firing or cone 10 firing. Maybe they all support it I don't know but they don't specifically say it.

All these great ideas for controlling kilns need a serious " redundancy " or two. The last thing a ceramicist need is a runaway kiln as the result of malfunctioning or DEAD $7 no quality controlled mass produced toy COB. Even major brand name PID controllers ask for redundancy if used in projects. Two years elapsed from this video and no followups. So I assume " We have a problem Houston ".

For the safety switch I suggest making that cuttable pad into a jumper so to add a switch you just pull a jumper and plug in a switch or to bypass the switch you use a jumper. That could also be inverted so no jumper is necessary and a high signal kills the power but then if it fails it just stays on which isn’t ideal.

I like the design idea of using the binder clips, but now that i expanded the build area with 2 more staging plates, i can't clip stuff on anymore, so i need to go back to using a screw in place design... I'm actually on the fence to exchange all the screws that are used to mount the electronics and stuff on the bottom of the staging plate with countersunk screws, so there is no more screwhead interference with part trays and pcb holders on top of the staging plate. The other idea i had is to just move all that electronics and pneumatics somewhere else on the machine where it's not in the way, for example on the left side of the machine, outside of the bottom aluminium extrusion. But i guess making some countersinks with the drill and change the scews is the quicker "fix" for now. Looking forward to follow you along on your journey with the Opulo. 😃

Hi @CurlyTaleGames Thanks for sharing your opinion. This is really helpful for me. Just subscribed to your channel. Could you do me a favor? I am looking for some test videos of cams where a table tennis ball can be seen in action. I am streaming tablesoccer aka foosball and on a pro-level which is then a quite fast game. I am looking for a cam which has a good pic quality, and can stream at least 1080p with minimum 60fps and over some hours without over heating. A an external power supply and (in an optimal world) with external microphone input (but if tehr is no input for a mike, it is not a big deal). Could you do me the favor and produce some test vid with the cams you have with a table tennis ball bouncing on a table from some hight and a distance of let's say 2 meters or 6,5 feet ? The connection of such a cam can be in done via HDMI or USB. Do you may have other solutions in your mind based on my request? Thanks and greetings from germany. (and sorry for my dump english)

Very cool work you’re doing. I work with molten glass and although I hear it lots I’ve never learned what different cone firings translate into for the kinds of firing schedules I need (simple ramp/hold). It looks like your device does that though so probably can just ignore the cone stuff? Can your device work with thermocouples that read up to 2500 F? Is there a 4-20mA output a guy could connect into a phase angle SCR?

    • @curlytalegames2609
      @curlytalegames2609 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Gregg! Yeah in ceramics they use cones to measure heat work. Different clays and glazes will be rated for certain cones. Kiln controllers will have preset firing schedules for cone firing. Under the hood it's the same as ramp/hold. Yes it can work with K, J, T, N, S, E, B and R type thermocouples. I'm focusing on getting K to work first since that's the most common. How PyKiln is set up is the ESP32 has an i2c connection to a PCB that has all the sensors and has outputs for solid state relays

Thanks for making these. I bought the kit a week or two ago. Gonna be a little while longer before they're ready to ship. It's exciting the possibility of an affordable way to automate SMD placement. I just finished a toaster oven to reflow conversion and did my first stencil job with tape and tweezer placement. I've done hand soldering and hot air rework stuff for years. It went mostly well but I had to rework the 100 pin TQFP package, as it just got too much solder. Then the new part had a few open connections, I discovered trying to figure out the weird behavior of the LCD. Learned I need a proper desktop stenciling machine and that tweezers are fine for passives but a PITA for larger parts. Still, it's opened up so many possibilities with chips I would have difficulty hand soldering.

@@viveksharma9564 I built the Whizoo kit. You buy the oven and pretty much everything else comes in the kit. I've only built two revisions of one board but the reflow oven handled leaded and lead-free reflow fine. The PCBAs came out with nice shiny fillets just like a professionally assembled board without burning components. Only issue I've ran into has been too much paste on tight pitch QFPs causing shorts. But that's more an issue of my paste stencil process.

Hey there! I am a glass/ceramics artist, developer (frontend/backend/cloud devops) and a tinkerer. I have been looking to get a better setup for controlling my kilns, especially when it comes to glass arts as the schedules are very finicky and change all the time depending on what you want the glass to do. I know python, javascript and vue (among other languages/tech stacks) and would love to get this going for my small 2 kiln studio. Please let me know how best I should get started with this cool project.
