Looking at the Teenage Engineering Ep-133 Knock Out 2! Should you buy one?
The Teenage Engineering KO2 video is finally here. I wanted to take a little time to talk about this particular sampler. I actually enjoy it a lot. Its very user friendly and has a pretty great workflow in my honest opinion. The sampling is easy and the concept of the step sequencer is pretty easy to understand.
The EP-133 K.O. II is the successor to the beloved PO-33 K.O. sampler, and it’s part of Teenage Engineering’s Pocket Operator series. But don’t let its compact size fool you-this little beast packs a punch! Here’s what you need to know:
Concept and Design:
The EP-133 K.O. II takes inspiration from old-school hardware, with a retro style reminiscent of Casio calculators, handheld games, and miniaturized MPCs.
Its display features a basic three-character readout alongside a bank of backlit indicators-a nostalgic nod to the '80s.
The pressure-sensitive mechanical keys (reminiscent of gamer keyboards) add to its unique vibe.
Despite its vintage aesthetics, the EP-133 K.O. II is surprisingly thin, solidly built, and about the size of a vanilla iPad.
Functionality:
Sampling: You can sample directly from your favorite source using the built-in microphone or the 3.5 mm input jack.
Sequencing: The EP-133 offers both step sequencing and real-time sequencing. You can create drum patterns, melodies, and loops effortlessly.
Chromatic Pitching: Play your samples chromatically across the keys.
Effects: It retains the “punch-in” effects from the PO-33 K.O., allowing you to manipulate your samples on the fly.
Velocity-Sensitive Keys: Yes, you read that right! The EP-133 K.O. II responds to how hard you hit those keys.
USB Connectivity: Connect it to your computer via USB for sample management and MIDI I/O.
Workflow and Inspiration:
The EP-133 K.O. II maintains the fast workflow of its predecessor. It’s a sampler that encourages experimentation and creativity.
While it’s still portable (you might even fit it in generous cargo pants), it now boasts full-resolution audio and sampling capabilities.
Think of it as a scaled-up version of the PO-33/KO! micro sampler, but with expanded features.
Comparison and Context:
The EP-133 K.O. II competes with other compact workstations like Roland’s SP-404 and Novation’s Circuit Rhythm.
Interestingly, Teenage Engineering seems to have drawn design inspiration from early Akai MPCs.
In summary, the EP-133 K.O. II is a delightful blend of nostalgia and modern functionality. Whether you’re on stage, in the studio, or just jamming at home, this little powerhouse is ready to make music with you.

I'm offering my opinion on the sp-404 (not the mk2). Is it still worth it in 2024. I think for the right price it can be a great addition to any producer's setup. The machine is very portable and a great sketchpad to store samples and new ideas in. Bought an MK2 mainly as an FX box to run my MPC live 2 through for live performances. Took me about a year to build up the will to learn how to actually make beats on it as I knew it was going to be tedious in comparison to my Live 2 but once I got the hang of it I was hooked! Even though it has waaaay less features than my Live 2 and is nowhere near as “Edit friendly”, to my surprise I find that I actually enjoy the fact that it’s limited in capabilities in comparison to my Live 2 because it sort of forces you to make decisions and move on, whereas in my live 2 I can and WILL spend entirely too much time tinkering on things such as how much signal from an individual sample I’m sending to the reverb return and the reverbs characteristics and what not. Don’t get me wrong, I thinks it awesome that that’s even possible and that you can really get into minute details in the MPC but stuff like that tends to disrupt my workflow in terms of finishing a beat. In other words, a current gen MPC is like a PS5 and an MK2 is like a PS2. Yes the PS5 has TONS more features/ capabilities but the PS2 has an essence and feel that makes it legendary in its own right.

I have this machine to create tracks in logic. I also use my TD3 to sequence random sounds in non-phonic form. This machine is a bit better than the SU10 and has the same inherited things, although the SU10 sequencer is what makes the SU10 interesting, as it has midi in/out and can be used with a midi keyboard to make interesting compositions with very short sounds, I use this thing with these same minimal techniques. I actually bought this machine to sample and play sounds with it over basic instrumentals and add some low fidelity. There are many things I love about the SU200. I like the live performance tricks, ways of playing and with only 6 FX stacked you can process voices recorded on the sampler, these FX are great. Another thing I really like is the ribbon, although it looks like crap it isn't, it even has shortcuts to edit a loop easier. I don't know what the tap function is, but once I discovered that I could match the BPM of a beat on the audio signal input, it's really useful for sampling the source after measuring the beats of the beat you want to sample. I love the resampling it has (resampling in 1996 is always a great thing) It's an 8-track looper, I can make a minimal techno beat and make things transform into something else. It doesn't have a looper mode, it's not a loopstation, but it's a looper that can program very easily with 8 tracks of a song created in a DAW with the same BPM. And finally, the sample CD that comes in the box, it's a gem! This thing shines the most next to the sounds on the CD it comes with, with its rhythms, loops, synth sounds, voices and effects, it has everything and it is an audio CD that I highly recommend, it was created by AMG (advanced media group) for Yamaha, a great producer of classic samples rescued from the 80s and 90s, really this CD is a great value for the machine, and just with this you can do many ideas with a DAW in 2024. Yes, I know that some think I'm exaggerating, but I've had it since 1996, I bought it before the MC-303, I love these cheap things from the late 90s, they are designed for improvisation and now with modern DAWs I barely need virtual plugins to make music. The machine needs to be investigated and if I've learned anything with it is that depending on the person it can be a disaster or a genius. If anyone has this thing and is disappointed, I'll just tell them not to sell it, it's worth more than it seems, it's an underrated machine and above all very underrated. The CD has great instrumental value and the sampler has good editing functions, it also has a chromatic mode where you can play keyboard sounds and samples with rarities. It's true that it has the same pads as an SP404, it's very similar in that and it also reminded me of the Electribe. If you want to combine modern sounds with low fidelity sounds to do things like trip-hop, down tempo, 2 step drum and bass, jungle, house, techno... this machine is great, it all depends on how you use it, really this machine was used a lot in the records of the late 90s and 2000s, because it was a very instant machine, thought a lot to play live, even with a midi keyboard you can play great things, capturing things from the radio, you don't need a big team to do great things. In 2024 I sample stuff from internet and analog radios, I always turn it on with Logic Pro and it's all fun sometimes I'm surprised by what I can do with those moments where I'm exploring radio stations and then playing sounds that I find. It's a small sampler that has its good virtues, and the simpler things are on the SU-200 the better the results are. Thanks for the video, don't sell it seriously, no one will give anything for it and if you lose it you'll lose a hardware sampler from the end of the 20th century, a machine with multi-effects and a programmable looper. 😅👍👍

My first MPC was the 2000XL in 2000 when I was stationed in South Korea. Over the years I bought maybe 12 of them cheap from eBay to mod by adding SCSI card readers, blue LCD screens, solder new LEDs, solder new tact switches and adding internal SCSI hard drives to store programs/samples/files to a 2.5” laptop hard drive. Made good money off of it and I had fun doing it. Cheers from the UK! 🇺🇸🇬🇧

That’s passion, I’m getting more into modding myself. Something magic about these machines. Whether it’s nostalgic or not they seem to breed creativity in multiple ways. Peace from the US bro

Just get the MPC One+ Its not vintage just old.... don't you want Wifi? plugins? a bigger screen? you need to think about your eye health.. that screen is a killer.

If I want WiFi and a touch screen I’ll use koala on an ipad. Had an mpc one, donated it to a school.

I felt like a fish out of water when I sold mine and I went back and got another one 5 months later 😅😅, love the MPC 2000xl, you'll get homesick the first week without it 😂

just got a 5000 took it apart cleaned it up deoxit the whole nine. I have a ren too i use for stems and some chopping but everything sounds closer to radio ready from the ol' fiver. Unless they make a new one like the old ones i'm sticking with my 5000.

The 5000 got a bad rap when it came out. I wish I still had mine honestly. The built in synth was really useful.
