Good video aside from some of the political commentary.
just played it last night for the first time and your video helped quite a bit, we loved it!
Arcs is not published by Wherlegig btw, it's by Leder Games
D'OH!!! thanks for that correction, i'll try to update that... silly me
Pericles is hard to table. The Peloponesian Struggle is real :D
Solid quarter!
Any quarter than includes a play of Vijayanagara is solid! 💪🏼
La Primogenita is another really creative and great Kim Kanger game from Legion you should check out (though not as complex as Dien Bien Phu)
I've heard good things! Will keep my eyes peeled for it ;)
I am not attracted to Hex & Counter games, usually because of the aesthetics of NATO symbology etc. Dien Bien Phu is likely to be my first one, one day..... but it scares me at the same time, ha! I think I'd also need a week to grok it. :)
yeah, that might be the thing that puts me off HnC slightly, but the graphics on DBP are great. Looking for other games with that vibe and feel. Whatever helps to make the game flow smooth and engaging!
A friend showed me Sea Salt & Paper last week, and it's fantastic! It's really a lot of fun, I am playing it on BGA now (and I managed to get 4 mermaids and insta-win! I was so excited!!). Definitely give it a try when you can!
This is one of my favorite CDGs of all time; great subject matter, tons of content in the box, unique systems. I should really play it more.
I figured this would be your jam ;) Epic game, can't wait to play more!
Really heartened to see this video and Joel's comments. This is coming back out and i've owned a copy for years, and always thought about the matter of who gets to tell the story with this game. This vids given me plenty to think about when it comes to how i present the review. Definitely going to mention the Tangata whenua at the start of the review. And, well, you may hear some of your thought echoed in my own comments when i get to the video. Cheers.
Wow, thank you for the kind words! I hope it comes across clear in the video, and in my replies to these comments, that although I'm "somewhat conflicted" about who gets to own the narrative this is by all means a great game and a learning tool on Indigenous struggle in North America. So thoroughly engaging with a complex narrative. I haven't seen anything else like this, on the topic or otherwise - trust me, I've been looking! I look forward to hearing about your experience with the game. Enjoy!
Nice summary of the game. If you do another scenario it might be useful to take a shot of the map at the end of each player's turn so we can kind of follow along with what you were doing/trying to do.
“Playing games with pieces like this…” so in other words, you’ve put the wooden blocks and giant plastic toys… ahem PIECES down and started playing REAL war games! 😅😉
Hey. This is a judgement-free zone! All game pieces are VALID. Well, not minis. Those are dumb.
@@WdTPD now waiting for a serious game with a very deep topic that you are passionate about to get announced… with MINIS! Similar thing happened to me. Wrote off bulge games, not my topic… boom, compass drops enemy action ardennes, favourite designer, elegant solo… 😭
This is one of the best board game rules explanations I have aver seen. And definitely the best one for war games. Congrats! I wish you had even more! 😂🎉 Levy and Campaign for example feels uncrackable for me 😅 pls help haha
Thank you for the kind words! There will be more in the future, as for L&C games - probably Henry and/or Seljuk when they're available.
Thanks a lot for that video! Really feel like I could start right away now.
I believe in you - go for it! (Great game, you owe it to yourself to play 😉)
My Dad wrote the screenplay to the film Land and Freedom
That's awesome! Would you know of a good way to catch this film, streaming service or otherwise, for a Canadian viewer? Searching service, including local library offerings, are coming up with nothing.
Bro, thank you so much for this video. I loved your rules explanation and reflection on what you’ve learned from it. I was super excited about this when I found it still sealed but in consignment at my FLGS. Then I read the rulebook…and set it up, read more of the rulebook, tried to read the solo rules which seem really different. Until you mentioned the lack of importance in the board I was still confused that I was missing something! Thanks man, I think I’ll give it a shot. I was tempted to give up, but the theme has really saved this mess of a game.
Right on, I’m glad it helped! Admittedly the game is still a little rough around the edges, but how can you NOT enjoy looking at so many cards with so many iconic people! (To be 1000% clear I mean the Civil Rights activists, NOT their adversaries)
This game looks awesome. Great tutorial!
Thank you for that turorial! Got this game waiting on my shelf and it's soon gonna hit the table, and that vid helps a lot getting into the rules.
Nice! Share with friends, let the vid do the teach so you can get right into the game ;)
thanks for the video. the designer's original video honestly did not help with explaining what was happening
I'm glad it helped... and all fairness to the designer, he's designed a great game and it's a completely different skillset to clearly articulate the rules to a broader audience. In my opinion, the designer should not be the one writing the rulebook, and in very rare exceptions* there should be yet another person providing a teaching script. * Tory Brown does and EXCELLENT job of teaching her own game, Votes for Women, extremely smoothly.
This is one that very recently caught my eye (just this past weekend, in fact!), so this is very timely. Questions for you: 1. Will you do a review of it? 2. How well do you think it scales with more players? Or to put it another way, do you think it works equally well at all player counts? 3. What are your thoughts on using the dice to track the prestige and tension levels? Do you think it works well, or would markers have been better? I feel like the dice take me out of the atmosphere of the game a bit, but I guess it's easier to use dice than to have a multitude of markers?
Thanks, Richard! 1. Perhaps! I need to get a full game with multiple players to make any judgement. Solo is pretty neat, but overall good "practice" for multi-player interaction. 2. I think 3 is ideal for interactivity, but 4 and 5 will be very nice 3. Dice are an interesting choice. They make more sense for the Tension, especially the boxes that "trickle down" - and some cards refer to a *specific* die being at a certain level. However Prestige could be tracked other ways, i'm sure. And they're BIG CHONKY dice! The most prominent thing on the table compared to the cubes. Now, some of the details on the map... I think I'll save that for another video... ;)
@@WdTPD Yeah, the chonkiness of the dice (and the fact that they are plain white dice, nothing special) are what especially distract me. I think even a different colour (blue? to contrast with the red?) would have been a better choice.
A very well organized and clear tutorial. I will definitely check your channel for future content. A minor note, it’s pronounced sub suh quent, rather than sub c quent.
Very glad to hear, Stuart! But also: to-may-toe, to-mah-toe :D (i'm inventing a new dialect, lemme speak)
@@WdTPD very good. Thanks for not taking it the wrong way. Your channel is very good!
Going to Gen Con this weekend and am so excited to pick it up! Thanks for making the video!
Did you make it to their booth? 😃
How many COIN games do you guys need? And by COIN I mean the system Volko invented. I feel like they are all very similar, with theme changes being the big differences. These must play very good multiplayer, because they are not very good solo.
I can only speak for myself, of course, but I currently have six COIN games (All Bridges Burning, Cuba Libre, Falling Sky, Fire in the Lake, Pendragon and People Power) and I have ordered two more (China's War and The Pure Land). I have played all of them multiple times - apart from the latter ones due to obvious reasons - and I will continue to play them. The COIN games I have are different enough that I think it is ok to have them in my collection. I don't know about the preordered ones, but since I'm interested in Chinese and Japanese history, I have no qualms either. I don't think that the question "How many do you need?" makes a lot of sense. How many books do you need? How many hex-and-counter wargames do you need? It all comes down to individual preferences.
Excellent video. Very informative and entertaining. I have been listening to wargames to go for quite some time. I always think it is done after no new episodes for a year or two. Glad to see it’s still going. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss Conquistador. I know it is a very one-sided view of history. Perhaps, it shine some light on how little the early colonizers thought of the indigenous people. It would allow you to put yourself in that mindset. Contrasting that mindset to a more even viewpoint could be educational and its own right.
Thanks for listening and for your kinda words! I wouldn't be opposed to trying Conquistadors (most likely the Compass one) as I'm sure I'll learn *something* from it - but I'll probably need to take a shower after to get some of the "ick" off :D
It was great meeting you at the con!
Dave! it was soooo great to meet you - I regret not being able to test Night Witches with you and Liz, or any other designs you have your hands on, but there was so much good stuff going on.
Huge thank you for including Arete and for the kind words, Joe! We already talked but for the benefit of your viewers I’ll mention it is available on iPhone as well as iPad (and one purchase gets it on both)! PS Your hands don’t look a day over 35.
You earned it! Another game of Arete last night, such a blast. This game is SOOOO addictive, I blame you for upping my "screen time".
@@WdTPD So great to hear. I love it! Not a lot of activity yet in the online area but there is one guy who has gotten me addicted to it. Something I never thought would happen.
Glad you're trying Falling Sky! It's a good one, but definitely best at 4 players as there can be quite a bit of negotiation. I have Plains Indian Wars and tried it solo but the rules ambiguities in the rulebook were a bit annoying. I really want to try it at 2 or 4 players. I just got Port Arthur, beautiful board and counters. Will try it soon! Dien Bien Phu is one that really attracts me, thematically and aesthetically. I am not attracted to hex & counter at all, especially ones that abstract their counters with NATO symbology and such. But when I saw the counters for Dien Bien Phu, I decided I could definitely try that one. The length and complexity of it scared me off though. I know it's not *that* complex, but I haven't played anything like it before, so it feels like it's be a bit much for me. Anyway, I look forward to seeing your comments on it! I always enjoy your videos including these quarterly reviews, Joe. Looking forward to your next one!
Falling Sky is definitely neat, might be awhile until I can get a full 4player going. I also have the expansion! Lots to explore there. I *kinda* think i know what ambiguities you're talking about in PIW, and well... kinda speaks to the designer's track-record ;) DBP will be QUITE the undertaking, might need to do a lengthy AAR on that one!
Great video. Thanks for a dive into the rules. It helped clarify a few things I was confused about from the rulebook.
thank you for highlighting Klee and his work. really appreciate your channel and pushing the conversation around representation, tokenization and other pressing issues in our hobby.
I'm glad i got to experience this game - only one solo "test" playthrough so far, but it looks very cool. I may require some rules clarifications, and if I do I'm sure others will as well so I may put together a teaching video. Or i'll go back and watch Klee and Princess' playthrough to see if it answers questions. If not, hoping someone can help clarify the rules!
@@WdTPD oh, a play through would be great and support for others who may have questions!
This is terrific! Your video has just lowered the entry level for this game by a lot. Thank you. Hope to see some more of that (Pendragon maybe ;) ).
Excellent - i'm soooo happy to hear that, it's exactly the reason why i make these vids. cheers!
Watching this again for review after branching out into other COIN titles. Again great video I think it is an awesome teaching tool especially for new players to COIN. Would love to see more COIN videos with history lessons mixed in. Question: at 44:51 you redeployed troops to Santiago de Cuba , but there is neither Government control nor a base there. I don't think you can do that unless its Havana. and there are no Government controlled cities. Cuba Libre rulebook 6.4.2
I'm glad these videos are helpful to you - and YES, good catch! I had to look at the rule again myself as I thought Troops could go to Cities *or* Gov-controlled spaces, but looking closely again at 6.4.2 they must be BOTH so Santiago de Cuba isn't an option for re-deploy in this case. Good eye ;)

This is a fantastic vid, thank you
Thank you for the kind words!
This is by far the best tutorial I have found for Cuba Libre. Very clear and comprehensive with the information presented in a logical order. Up there with Rodney Smith “Watch it played”. Thanks so much. New sub here.
Thanks for this great overview of the game 😊👍
No probs! Ready to tackle this one? 😉
@@WdTPD absolutely not 🤣 but I really like those kind of games, that tell great stories. I'll just have to wait for the reprint, here in Germany 😅
20:31 Thanks for pointing that out. I found the wording in the Rules of Play and the Player's Aid a bit confusing with the use of the word "Then..." BTW do you play with the "Deception" chits?
Nah, those Deception chits are pretty boring, honestly, including the ones that just say "no effect" or whatever. I don't mind games with a bit of hidden information, and I think there is room for that and COIN and COIN-like game (see the latest Gest of Robin Hood) but those chits ain't it for me! Actually, that's what I like People Power for, to throw a wrench in the works with the Personality cards.
@@WdTPD Expanding on the base placement after Rallying. After playing Andean Abyss recently on rally-the-troops, the game engine confirms that insurgents indeed cannot place a base where they just rallied guerrillas in, but it does allow the Government to place a base where it just trained troops in. Seeing that AA, CL as well as PP all have the same Train operations, that is going to switch our games up quite a bit.
13:00 Government bases have me a bit baffled. Do you have to have a Government base in a city to train? Are there conditions you can train in a city without a base? If so what is the purpose of having a base in a city and why does the Standard and Extended Scenarios have all or almost all cities with a Government base? "In any city and or countryside space with a base Government can place up to four of their cubes" - this makes it sound like you don't need a base in a city to place cubes
Looks like you got your answer over on this thread? It's a good question, and the base-placing procedure in CL originally broke my brain, but it makes sense now. So it seemed like a breeze to me when tackling People Power. boardgamegeek.com/thread/3305566/train-operation-questions
30:27 or 34:37 - just to add: Why would a first eligible player take the Op Only instead of the Event or Op + Special? To prevent another player from playing the Event. Great video thanks for posting. Of all the ones I've watched I think yours is the best I've seen.
Do you like it better this one or People Power?
ooooo, tough question, don't make me choose between my favourite children... hahaha. They both serve their purposes, I like this for the game play and way-back dive in to history, but I like People Power because I am really in to the topic of 20th century peoples' revolutions. I did play Vijayanagara quite a bit solo as the Sultanate, and had a blast, I need to do the same with PP. One thing I do like better with Vijayanagara is that even the non-Player factions use resources so you do get the full experience even when solo'ing.
Outstanding! Thanks very much for providing this tutorial -- our first game is tomorrow night!
EXCELLENT, this is exactly why I make this, to help others with their first game. Enjoy! (I'm sure you will)

Yes. Yes you do.
Glad I got to meet and play the 1714 game with you. A great con to be your first!
yeah, Bill! 1714 was pretty great ...i'll eventually remember the actual year when talking about the game... even though I just kinda camped out in Northern Italy and didn't do much throughout the game (y'all keep throwing Bourbons on my doorstep!) it was very engaging. If I had played something SLIGHTLY smarter, I would've tied Dan for 1st place. Would *definitely* play this again.
