In my opinion, this story is just another example of how Vivekananda was a terrible person. Arrogant, contradictory, with no compassion for others. If he had lived today, he would certainly be another one of those motivational coaches. I have no respect for what he said or did. I only continue to watch the Vedanta channels because of the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, who was truly enlightened and wise, not because of this farce of Vivekananda.

My instinctual reaction when I heard you tell the story of Swamigi's late arrival to his lecture was this: That Swamigi, being aware of all that will occur in this maya-dream world of ours, must have know that his late arrival, while it may have created a temporary inconvenience to his audience in that time and place, would be used again and again down through the years as a sort of parable to teach learners on the path of sadhana the truth about time. My guess is that he did it all deliberately, acting compassionately for the greatest good. (I believe this, because I have heard other speakers tell of Swami Vivekanada's late arrival for the speaking engagement before.) Commonalities in the different VEDANTA SCHOOLS 1. All of them accept the authority of the 3 PRINCIPAL TEXTS- The Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and Brahmasutras. 2. All of them claim that we are suffering because we are trapped in samsara and are ignorant of Brahman. 3. All of them claim that we do not know the nature of our own Self. We the Self are not the body-mind complex. 4. We can gain the knowledge of Brahman through some spiritual practices. The nature of this knowledge is experiential. 5. By knowing Brahman, we attain the highest.

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA: Who told you that? [Miss Bell could not remember.] Well, I don't think so. I think this world is a circus ring in which we are the clowns tumbling. MISS BELL: Why do we tumble, Swami? SWAMI VIVEKANANDA: Because we like to tumble. When we get tired, we will quit.
