Interview With Brian Ortiz of Tzompantli & Xibalba | The Heavyist Interviews
🚨We had a chat with Brian from Tzompantli and Xibalba🚨
Subscribe to the channel here!: www.youtube.com/@theheavyistpodcast?sub_confirmation=1
This week Sonny sat down with Bigg Brian Ortiz, driving force behind the breakout indigenous death doom outfit Tzompantli. Tzompantli's album "Beating The Drums of Ancestral Force" was one of the hardest releases of 2024 so we're stoked to get to chat to the man.
We delve into the cultural influences that shape Ortiz's music, particularly the incorporation of indigenous folklore and themes. The discussion also touches on the dynamics of live performances, the challenges of touring with a large band, and Ortiz's personal interests outside of music, including movies and hobbies.
Thanks so much to Brian for hanging out, this ruled.
Cheers!

Thanks dude!
I can't wrap my head around how beautiful this is. Defninitely on my bucket list on some of the next years. Amazing place, and great vlog! Glad you enjoyed ULTHA.
It's a great fest and an awesome location! You should definitely go x
Happily Stumbled across Crippling Alcoholism the other week and after the 1st listen I was hooked. I'm absolutely blown away by this modern masterpiece. PIssed,Stoned,Sober. Crippling Alcoholism kidnapped my mind.
Super Interesting- Cheers
Cheers dude x
Great lists, guys! A few surprises in there that I need to check out, balanced with the obvious (Blood Incantation; Ulcerate) and the well-deserved (Gaerea). I'm not sure of an order, but here are some of my favourites: Gaerea - Coma Devenial Verdict - Blessing the Despair Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere Ulcerate - Cutting the Throat of God Pillar of Light - Caldera Sgaile - Traverse the Bealach Huntsmen - The Dry Land Vorga - Beyond the Palest Star See you at Fortress 2025!
Thanks! You got some good taste, I didn't listen to the Huntsmen record enough cheers for the reminder!
@@theheavyistpodcast Thanks man! Yeah, it blew me away. Doomy metallic Fairport Convention isn't something I knew I wanted so badly! Scareport Convention? Also, that BI black light artwork is sick!
Awesome video with Brian. I’m pretty sure he’s saying Xibalba wrong though 😁
I agree, awesome video. He’s pronouncing xibalba right though.
Was gonna be checking out Stick To Your Guns anyway but cheers for the Obscure Sphinx and Prostitute recs. First time I've heard a Prostitute be recommended by a podcast. Keep fighting the good fight and stick to your guns!
Haha cheers Paul, it's a new one on us as well
@@theheavyistpodcast I can see a lot of us spending time with the same Prostitute this weekend. Tried their album and loved it. Obscure Sphinx EP was epic too!
Oh shit! “RIFS BLASTS LAUGHS” 😅 Not sure what happened there hahaha
Great review guys and keep up the good work!
Thanks Nate!
This made me appreciate the brilliance of the album even more. Love dude's brain and serendipitously fucked up voice
new gatecreeper is excellent
Great vibes in this interview - thanks for the shoutout Andreas 🖤🖤🖤
Thanks dude! I checked out your music on Andreas recommendation, VERY sick x
@@theheavyistpodcast Super stoked to hear that!! Thank you for taking the time! - Jakob (vocals/guitar)
Great interview! But omg realizing the last interview with Andreas was almost 5 years ago made me feel so old. I still think of Drag Me Down as a new release lol. Regardless, I’m very excited for the new record!
Hahaha so true, the years fly by, appreciate you x
Good Stuff - Cheers!
Cheers Steve!
Wasn’t expecting this on my bingo card!! I’m digging this
Came to this after watching the Tony interview!
Hell yeah! Welcome aboard 🖤
I got the album Merciless it’s fuckin awesome
Man, I can’t overstate how fascinated by this band I’ve been since discovering them. I saw a live vid of them where the bassist has this smile on his face the whole time like he knows how special their music is, too, and it’s well-deserved. In a world with real justice, they’d have some sort of Deafheaven - Sunbather-era explosion and get booked all over the place. Some really special stuff here that deserves real exposure. It’s both a breath of fresh air, experimental, accessible because of how great those vocals work. I typically don’t love this vocal approach but it’s perfect in this context. Like I said, I think it’s some really special and exciting shit. Their new single Blood Pony is crazy-good!
Couldn't agree more with you more! 🖤
Really rad that you got Anthony to do this. I love Cult Leader so much, easily my favourite band in the last few years. I was fortunate enough to catch them in Paris while on vacation and it was a dream come true. First show in a foreign country and they played the entire A Patient Man album except World Of Joy I believe. I even got a chance to chat with Mike a bit. Just genuine dudes all around, I look forward to that cryptic slow track Anthony was hinting at. And I agree with everyone else, the pacing in A Patient Man is perfect. I also agree with your conversation that "too much technique" robs from an authentic performance. Too much polish wipes away the real stuff. Thanks for doing this! Side Note: I also watch the Audiotree performance fairly regularly..it's so sick!
Hell yeah man! Thanks for checking it out. That show in Paris sounds absolutely amazing
Thanks for keeping me entertained & enlightened during 2024! See you next year!
fun video, nice conversation -- bit of feedback though, especially coming from those outside of UK, take the time to "land" the statement when you announce the band and the album... first half of the episode - a number of them tumbled out at the end of a long winded anecdotal thought. 30 seconds of getting to the answer, and then the piece of info we're looking is muddied by sliding out in the middle of a sentence. Not trying to be mean, just hoping to be clear. #2 album is: ____ by _______. End sentence. then... go into your thoughts and musings. Cheers
Actually really appreciate the feedback dude, glad you enjoyed it x
@@theheavyistpodcast Cheers... i did notice one particular up and coming band from now neck of the woods that missed its name here... sending you guys a gift ;) check out the rest of their material

No Absolutes In Human Suffering is one of the greatest extreme albums of all time dude I agree
Really interesting interview. I was also on the ‘A Patient Man tracking it a bit odd’ train when it first came out but having re-listened to it ahead of this interview I was much more into it and was good to hear Anthony explaining the thought behind it. Was also good to hear him talking about being a father. You don’t often hear musicians of any type talk about parenthood so nice to hear open up about that side.
It was surprisgly wholesome wasn't it \Gary
I felt like the pacing of a patient man was great. I feel like it made the chaotic moments more meaningful by giving a good contrast between songs.
Caught them for the first time last year, had to catch them twice this tour. Amazing band and very cool human beings. Appreciate the review!
Thanks! Yeah we saw them at Fortress and it was amazing x
Nice one guys!
Big up Steve
Naw. The pacing on A Patient Man has always been perfect. It was a sonic roller coaster.
This is the kind of interview that you guys do which you just don't get with other outlets. Its just real and genuine and I think bands and guys like Anthony appreciate. Great to see you got a legend on the show.
Thank you for the lovely words Paul mate
Hands down the most anticipated upcoming album. I’m a cultist that needs to be led.
Preach brother Grant
I’m really surprised to hear there’s criticism of the pacing in A Patient Man. I really like the flow of the loud/fast songs and the quieter ones.
Great interview,it’s nice to learn even a weapon like Anthony is only human😀
Haha yeah, he didn’t undo a zipper and turn into demon or anything.
Absolutely fascinating to hear about his vocal warmups - reassuring even! A certified legend, class conversation.
Cheers Harry x
Hell yeah!

Thanks for making my day, guys. That Mind Prisoner album is everything to me and I'm so happy that somebody understands what we were going for with it.
Much love dude, awesome record!
Merciless is the best body count so far excellent!
Hell yeah!
As a person that’s straight edge, you are fine repping merch from a straight edge band and not be straight edge as long as it doesn’t blatantly say straight edge on it. It would be weird if you were wearing something with XXX on it and drinking a beer at the same time. 😂
Hahaha cheers for clearing that up Nate! Appreciate it x
I was like 9 when that first album came out and I remember my stepbrother bought the cassette tape of it and played it nonstop for like 2 weeks. Loved 'em pretty much ever since!
Hell yeah!
Lads ,.I'm thinking of flying over to this from Ireland next year. Would love to hang with ye lads! Love the video
Hell yeah, we really want to go to 2025 but incineration is also calling our name
