My Careel 18 Second Wind's centreboard plate has been jamming down where it is now a problem, time to bite the bullet and pull the board out to refurbish her. Ha ha that toilet on the careel!! I have the same one , you need to be a contortionist to sit on it and then pull your pants back up..😅 (with the hatch closed when kids are running around the deck..if you know what I mean..) Thanks for the tip, I manage to pull the slide open by just having the portaloo is far forward as possible, but I might copy your system.

    Hi Nathaniel, great meeting you and your daughter. I used a nylon brush sanding wheel that fits on the end of your drill as compared to a wire wheel which is harsher, and that worked really well, took enough material off to get a really good bond without loosing the non skid texture. Note….. if you use two pack you need to add grit / non slip to the painted non skid because the non skid becomes really slippery. My number is in the Careel news Vice Commodore South, call me if you wish to discuss.

    Gday, mate. how racked back do the careel 18 masts gotta be? trying to rig mine (414). The shrouds stop the mast going 90 degrees. I understand that some rack is required, but maybe not this much? The forestay is loose as, connected it to something on furler. (Don't even know if correct. No information anywhere. Currently trying to zoom into every rigged C18 i can find.) The aft forestay is 150mm too short. I have just bought her and don't understand how it could be so off. I cant adjust the forestay with length trim. I have just sent my application too. There is no information about this kinda stuff online. must be mostly word of mouth.

      Hi Mossy, opinions vary but level up the boat to her water line, if no water line anymore float the boat in is normal rigged up state and hang a plum bob off the top rear of the mast, the plumb bob should sit between 1 and 3 inches behind the mast at the deck

    G'day Nick, You have done a fantastic job of resurrecting Second Wind, a very appropriate name. I have very much enjoyed your videos, particularly the mast raising system. I had previously read Vern's description of the system but your video gave me the information I needed to fit one to Karloo. It makes launching a whole lot easier and less traumatic. I own Careel 18 No 461 "Karloo", she is a great little yacht in good order but not a spring chicken. My trailer is getting to the stage of needing significant repairs and I notice your trailer with Second Wind is in very good order. Is your trailer an original, if not can you tell me where you got it, please.

  • @thomasschild284
    @thomasschild284 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Nick, Your keel is 90kg, what model of boat is it. Mine is a pre Mk1 which might be a bit lighter. I've had my keel repinned with a stainless steel bolt. The keel clunks around around a fair bit when I am underway and I think it needs to be shimmed. Did you put the nylon shims in before or after the keel was put back into the box. I assume you just put a hole in each shim and put the pin through them and the keel. Is that correct? Cheers Thomas

    • @wilsnich02
      @wilsnich02 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Thomas, Second Wind is an early Mark 1 Careel with the original 65 kg plate that has had two smaller plates laser cut and welded either side as cheeks then faired bringing the board upto approx. 90kg. There are pads either side of the SS Pin but obviously not thick enough so I have added an additional wedge at the back on the board, still need to launch to see how it works at stopping the board from going bonk bonk in the case.

    • @thomasschild284
      @thomasschild284 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wilsnich02 Hi Nick, Yours might be just a few boats newer than mine. I've just got the 65kg keel and a very short rudder. How does your boat hand with the cheeks and the extra righting moment? How big are the pads? Would they be 30cm in diameter? Do you use tap washers installed towards the back of the square section to reduce that longitudinal movement as shown in one of the original drawings? cheers Thomas

    Have a Fulton XLT, power winch, not that it's installed, doesn't work and trying to find some video's on why is impossible, Saw one video here where a guy had a 7000 lb Fulton winch, says the strap is only rated for 2500 lbs. hmmm, and you should only run them for no more than one minute, and then let is rest for 15 minutes, well that should take me about 2 hours to load a boat that is 28' even if it's half way on the trailer. also instructions are not very good, and after I wired the two leads, didn't work. It has a remote but that won't pair work either. Not very impressed Fulton. Guys, make sure you check the run time on them and the real load capacity

    Hey Nic. I bought #462 "Time Out" late last year. Joined CCYA. Been carrying around since 1992 a TS Magazine that had write up re #465. Had it trucked from Adelaide to Perth. Hull & rigging in excellent condition. But needs new sails which is underway. I watch all your stuff on TH-cam plus all the Careel 18 regatta etc footage. But need some help re Furling System; which had been removed. Replaced with fixed non swivel forestay but with original tension arm & pully at top between forestay end & mast hounds. The old drum & "wings" were included in the gear. Looking at some Mango Madness footage it looks like there is a Ronstan RF76 drum but where the original s/steel "wings" have been inserted into the drum & the tension arm connected to the drum. But I cant see the jib halyard. Does it go through the pully & back down to the drum or does it run down the mast. Also am making your mast raising system. Have everything except for a mast track guide. Was going to use a Ronstan PNP281 but they are out of stock. What did you use. Finally trust it is OK picking your brains. Its a bit lonely over here in the west. Cheers.
