    Great video For some reason when I try and calibrate and configure my rx (SR6) by using the LUA script my TX stops trasmitting and the RSSI drops below 10 preventing me from calibrating and configuring. All other times the signal is perfect over 100 RSSI. I have moved the tx and the rx away from each other and have even moved to different locations but to no avail Any idea why I may be losing signal at that stage?

    Your Wrong on a lot of fronts. I have both FrSKY TARANIS and Spektrum DX6e. Here is why: 1. Contrary to what you say, if you are new to RC hobby, FrSKY will take 3 times as long to learn how to use and if your on your own with no help and no computer program experience it may take you 5 times 2. FrSKY is not ROCK SOLID! switches have shorts, gimbals feel and operate like a toy at Walmart, 3. Put both radios on a table, grab an apprentice trainer (we are talking about newbie’s), and do a set up. Spektrum will already have the plane in the library. Select it and you’re good to go. Time = 2 minutes. FrSKY TARANIS with all the programming on 9 different pages will take you a minimum of 45 minutes the first time 4. Lemon RC RX for Spektrum are $6 for 4 channel and $12 for 6 channel. Stop comparing apples to oranges. 5. Spektrum started wayyyyyyy before anyone else. We are talking years before so yea they had go through upgrades from DSM, to DSM2, to DSMX 6. Your problems at your field is your field problem! Not Spektrum. I bet you had the same issue with 72mhz channels as well or maybe even worse

      Unfortunately I will have to agree to disagree with you as many others who have used both products extensively will as well. The fact is in all things that is you start out using any brand of anything in life, that brand will be easier for you compared to others because you are used to that brand. It’s not that you can’t learn other product, you are just more familiar with the product you spend more time with. As for the situation concerning setup on an apprentice, that plane is marketed by the same company that own Spektrum. And just like Spektrum, a 40.00 radio sold for 800.00, the apprentice is a 100.00 airplane sold for 300.00. But of course hobbies are expensive no matter how much they should really cost. Quality is a non-comparison. My FrSky X20S is way more better in quality than anything Spektrum could ever think of making. I own a Spektrum IS14 and it is no where near the quality or performance of the FrSky I own. Not to mention the crap android system out of the box on that thing. If you don’t update it instantly then it will corrupt you sweet little apprentice files the first time you enter sleep mode. As for the problem at MY field, Google the several flying sites in the past that banned spektrum at events. I understand you probably are a fan of spektrum and its ease of use while setting up horizons line of planes but go buy you a FMS from another vendor or some other plane than a horizon only line of planes and I guarantee you I can set my FrSky up quicker that you can your Spektrum. However that is not what any of this is all about, I share my experiences here as well as my knowledge of radio systems so people can have information they might want to hear before buying a product. I own both.

    I am still on the fence about Spectrum or Futaba vs Open TX alternatives. My old, now orphaned, Hitec Aurora 9 and Optima receivers are still serving my modest fixed wing electric powered scale model needs. It may be that the growing amount of possible interference on 2.4 Ghz may change my mind, but where I fly, it's not a problem for now. At 84, I'll pay more for a lower learning curve.

  • @garygullikson6349
    @garygullikson6349 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your use of the term "brownout" may be confusing. "Brownouts" are when receivers go into reset mode when they "see" lower than their acceptable operating voltage, for whatever reason. When in receiver reset mode, model will go out of control and usually crash. If the speed control's BEC (or flight battery pack) cannot cope with the number of servos or there is a servo drawing excess current due to jammed linkage, or if a stabilizer device is causing all servos to operate simultaneously, a "brownout" may occur. Not all receivers have the same tolerance of low voltage from the BEC. Not all "switch mode" BEC's can cope with all numbers of servos and flight stabilizer current needs. When using a given speed control, be aware of it's max current capacity vs your max servo current needs.

    • @shondorc3703
      @shondorc3703 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. Brownouts are caused by voltage drops from low voltage or heavy servo load. Maybe my use of the term “brownout” was not the term to use. However the issues we faced frequently, and still do are interference issues. Brownouts seem to be more frequent using some Spektrum receivers as well and they have acknowledged that exact issue as well. I will however add that Spektrum has seemed to get it much more dialed in finally with their newer receivers and radio systems. I have been testing some of their new stuff with an ix14 transmitter and bind and flys the past few months and it seems to hold up to the adverse radio environment so far. I am able to monitor after flight logs concerning packet losses in areas known to have interference and even though those packet losses seem to be high at times, I have not experienced any loss of control. Every system is prone to interference at times but I think the real issue is how long it takes to re-link after an interference experience. My FrSky will glitch sometimes but recovers instantly. Maybe Spektrum is recovering faster these days as well. Fingers crossed.

    Your method is better than nothing and adequate for glow engines although I would use a momentary switch but if you catch the switch while the throttle stick is not at minimum then the motor will start unexpectedly - you need to add additional conditions that ensures it will only arm when the throttle is shut

    I have my first EDF and have installed this receiver, you say to not fly first time with stabilization on, but I’m afraid I’ll put it n the dirt.. how will I get around this hurdle? Any advice welcome.

    • @shondorc3703
      @shondorc3703 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should have someone else fly and trim it out. It must be flown and trimmed first before activating your stabilization. Stability calibration will calibrate to your current control surface settings. If they are way out of trim then when you fly it and add corrections by trimming, the stabilization could work against you. That’s why they recommend to fly and trim it out for a comfortable flight first then bring it in and calibrate and activate.

    I inputs came standard in a different order. Mines in the order of aileron, elevator, throttle, rudder. I spent the last two days trying to figure out how to change these inputs or why my radio is automatically putting the inputs in this order.

  • @vyoufinder
    @vyoufinder ปีที่แล้ว

    Spektrum is easier?? My first radio was a Spektrum. It forced me to use all their terms for each channel and create mixes to setup my octocopter. The dx6i, it was a major pain. As soon as I got it working good and tested, I sold it and got a Taranis. The Taranis might have more options, but at least it lets you do what you want and the best part is doing it on the computer. For me, the Taranis with OpenTX was way more intuitive. Honestly though, when it' a choice of open source of proprietary, open source ultimately wins every time. More brains with more passion beats greed. If Spektrum or Futaba could run opentx, I'd look at those as serious options.

  • @frank-vq4mx
    @frank-vq4mx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Found "MY" problem. It had nothing to do with the receivers or setup. "My" problem was with the Castle Creations e.s.c. setup. I do a "manual" setup of the e.s.c. First. Turn the radio and receiver on. Make sure your motor is not connected. Move throttle stick to maximum. Than in the throttle endpoints adjustments, reduce the maximum and minimum values to +25% and -25%. With the throttle stick still at maximum begin to increase the +25% value until to hear a couple of "tones" from the e.s.c. Than move the throttle stick to the "lowest" position. Begin to increase the -25% value until you hear the e.s.c. "arm" itself. The e.s.c. is ready to go. The problem is that these values are "TOO LOW FOR THE GYRO TO INITIATE SELF CHECK" Return these values to +100% and -100% and you'll be able to enter the "SELF CHECK" that is required to finish setting up the gyro.

    Hi Shondo, I followed the video to the letter and only the left elevon responds to the dual rate switch, the right one keeps moving at 100%, ignoring the switch, where do I go wrong? All inputs are at 100%, the only differences are at the mixer page, to make sure the servo's move in the right direction.

    I have a Taranis QX7S and love it. Borrowed a Spektrum DX7 because I was having some issues with a new BNF Timber that was having stability issues with the Taranis and IrangeX multiprotocol module. Looking at the Spektrum user manual I was dismayed at how locked into the Spektrum mode of doing things was. I don't think you can designate a switch you prefer for a function to anything but what Spektrum decides it should be. Also, the Spektrum DXS transmitter I got with my Aeroscout could not be used with my Timber until I spent $30 for a programming cable which I needed to UPDATE the transmitter so that I could then choose a mode that would fly the Tmber. The DXS transmitter is currently $99, so add $30 for the programming cable and I'm at $129 for a radio that is garbage compared to my $160 Taranis QX7S with Hall Effect Gimbals

    Good advice. I've the same Rx & plane (and use the Tx16S Max) and I struggled getting it set up. Even on the bench first. I found the updated Rx instructions that were still called V1, lol. Watchig a few other Painful videos didn't help. Watching this now confirms I've done it right. I'd now like to know how to link the landing lights to the flaps, whilst keeping the others on as they should be.

    • @shondorc3703
      @shondorc3703 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @richardlong3615
      @richardlong3615 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shondorc3703 Sorry I didn't explain myself instead of doing it with two lines, one for each switch position you dont want you can do it with just one line and the switch is !SA^ in other words if the switch is not up then it overrides the channel.

    • @shondorc3703
      @shondorc3703 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I certainly agree. But I don’t want to start confusing new users with symbols and their definitions. I created the channel to be simple and easy understanding. Once they get acquainted with OpenTX, then they will and can learn other stuff an their meanings. However, you did give great instruction and I encourage all TH-cam watchers to give tips and tricks as this is how they can better learn. With this system, we learn from each other. I will be doing a basic series on how to set up from start to finish then I will encourage, once the fear and confusion about this system is tackled, to download the OpenTX manual to learn even greater things which I myself don’t even know. Thank you for subscribing and a big thank you for being interactive. That’s what this channel is all about.

Thank you very much for the video, it took weeks because I had bought the Taranis X9D with this receiver and I had a lot of problems, until thanks to your video I was able to configure the receiver. I have not flown with it yet, due to lack of confidence in the radio and the receiver. I am older and used to old radios, not to the open radio system, which still seems very complicated to me. • @shondorc3703

      The QX7 includes a module bay for JR type modules. You would have to purchase your spektrum module separately. I would recommend a multi-module if you choose to purchase a module. There are some pretty good ones out there. They will allow you to use multiple protocols. The actual Spektrum brand is over priced and can be tricky to find sometimes. Also if my memory serves me correctly, the Spektrum brand does not support DSMX, only DSM2. The Spektrum brand will work with DSMX but only in DSM2 mode. Many Multi-modules support Spektrum DSMX protocol.
