Agree it’s the reason I went self employed I’ve got a good mix of mow blow go and maintenance and like Adam said I’ve got a few I don’t mind doing If I ever find I don’t like going to a particular job then I’ll drop it and replace it You’ve got to have the right customers
Mainly border work with shrub trimming/pruning, I’ll take on small hedge work but tend to recommend tree surgeons for tree work and large hedges. I’ll do one day a week of lawn cuts a week and I have rotating weeks of days in gardens and 2hr 4hr time slots on gardens. I’m happy with how my week goes as I work alone and I can’t be breaking my back otherwise I’ll not have a job! Thanks for the video.
I really believe in diversifying, weather plays a big part in our job, if all I did was cut grass, I would have struggled 2018 when we had the heat wave all the grass was brown. during covid I lost a big commercial job, but kept most of my smaller jobs, when it rains and we cant cut grass we do hedges or garden tidy's, Sam prefers border work, so a mixture is good for us, most of the quotes we go for are for full maintenance. I say each to their own, what works for you may not work for someone else.
I don’t do any mow and go’s. All mine are maintenance, just because there’s always stuff to do if you can’t do the lawns for whatever reason. Also keeps you going further into the winter when hedges need facing up etc
@maintainyourgarden yeah true although I've let customers go it they've said that to me 🤣. I'll give them probably 3 chances during the season. Sounds a bit harsh but it's on my terms or find another gardener! But yeah i totally get your way of doing it. Good comment mate 👍
Been doing this since the 80s I used to do loads of cuts with all the maintainace last few years I've wound the border gardens right down kept about 30percent the rest are in and out cutting and hedging work you have to do what suits you and your business requirement 👍👍
I have mainly done the full monty, maintenance with all it entails. Now however I like to do the jobs separately. Grass cuts, border work or hedge work. But each to their own.
I use to offer everything and offered a package. But everyone had difffetent needs etc. Worked good for me but got to tell them what you can do as soon as
I mostly just cut, strim and blow but I have a decent understanding on what and when most plants/bushes need trimming at the time of year that each need doing. As long as i do a little weeding it really doesnt add much time on to do a mow at the same time. Edit... I'm not the cheapest gardener..
I prefer mow blow and go, have about 70% of these and others include some border work, a few I have ear marked to let go over the winter because I am not enjoying them. So very similar situation to yourself.
In most of my mow, blow, and go gardens, clients often request edging as a standard service. While traditional edging shears make the edges look much nicer than using the FSA 57 PolyCut 2-2 strimmer, it is time-consuming. If you dislike doing the edges, it might be worth considering swapping clients for more per hour.
Hi Grey gardener , I think you can’t really grow a business on grass cuts. If you employ staff properly ( PAYE , pension , holiday pay etc etc etc) you really need maintenance… the full package. Grass cuts only really March - October. Also you can generate extra income from add on’s . Drew in south Belfast.
Really good video Mate , This type of video is very helpful for me, as I am really starting to feel my age !! and I am not a great fan of weeding on my hands and knees or full maintenance jobs (all you can eat , open bar 🤣) 💚👍🙏💪 Your video - Sorry to say better than the footy tonight 😕
How do you charge for customers who want weekly grass cut & weekly maintenance for example a few shrubs to keep pruned and some beds / patio to weed? The company i currently work for do everything on an hourly rate so it would be like £60 per week for an hour a week, we cut the grass and then do as much of the weeding etc as we can... sometimes there's not enough time to make a good impact and sometimes we have too much time and not enough to do there. I'm just wondering as that works out £30 an hour really (2 people per job) so if I charged like that I'd maybe be cutting myself short on what I could get for the grass cut but weeding jobs seem easier to charge hourly for
@deansgreensuk I don't do any weeklys, they're all fortnightly but I just charge by the job rather than an hourly rate. Don't think I have a garden where there isn't enough time to get it all done though. I'll just charge accordingly and it takes as long as it takes kind of thing. Longest time at a garden is 1.5 hours I think
I’d prefer to just cut grass. Easiest work and pay is double what you get for weeding. I’m probably 70% maintenance and 30% grass cutting. I’d prefer it if it was the other way around.
Advertise for more grass work and each time you take one on drop a weeding job and keep doing that until your doing jobs and working for the right sort of clients 👌🏼
it’s just going to take time. Living in the north east of England you do miss a few days work every month too. Especially on the grass cutting side. I’m gettin abit annoyed and people saying oh it doesn’t need cut this week. I take it on the chin as I’m pursuing my hobbies and more free time helps with that.
@@THETATTOOGARDENER83I feel like it’s quite a bad time now. Most people will of found customers for the summer. Leaving the asshole customers and some people who’ve moved house. I’ll be best to start the campaign in March next year. Plus recency basis the bloody weather up here!
Depends when you cherry pick though. I've only done that recently once I'm booked up. Couldn't have done that from the start or I wouldn't have survived
If you're in a postiion where you do only what you want to do then that sounds like a winner to me 👍

25 years I’ve been doing what we do and all I do now is mow blow and go and I wouldn’t have it any other way
Monday to Thursday, morning till late, mow blow and go. Fridays and sat is hedge, conifer and tree work. I dont do weeding or bed work.
Exactly the same as me mate. Friday to catch up if bad weather or hopefully hedge work
@@carl8035 Exactly pal👍🏼🌲

@@maintainyourgarden thats a great point mate
Reduces the risk of them saying ‘sorry, don’t come today’ - always try and leave some hedges in the ‘bank’ for a wet day

15 jobs this week. And it’s gonna rain ☔️. Wish the weather was more predictable

do you charge hedges per trim or do you average the price out so its the same every visit just a bit unsure on pricing for full maintenance
Average it if I'm doing the whole garden yeah but I've gone too low too often.
I cant help but think mow blow and go will be come harder to get with robots mowers.

Again great comment we work per job it’s not good selling your time it restricts your earnings
Because with a hedge cut and grass cut if your giving a price u include both your petrol and waste money
