Is Air Asia really terrible?

I put AirAsia to the test on a 4 hour flight from Bali to Bangkok. From check-in to cabin baggage rules, pre-ordered meals, and the inflight experience, this video dives into everything you need to know about flying with AirAsia. Is it the Ryanair of Asia or is that being too kind?!
Jetstar from NZ to Bali: tight & expensive
มุมมอง 2.8Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Update: for those asking, here's some information about my villa in Bali (and it's great price!): treksolo.co/puri-pandawa-resort-bali/ It's a long trip from New Zealand to Bali via Sydney and there are no bargains to be found! On this pretty tight economy service, I paid for an 'upgrade' to include a bag and a snack, but you can judge if it's worth it!

Did it today! Loved it! Can not recommend it enough. We didn’t fo scenic plus, but still had the best time.
Fantastic! I loved it and think not doing scenic plus is the smartest way to do it!
This is fantastic Patrick!
I loved this part of NZ!
Thank you for YT’s I’m heading there in October
Yes, you should stop flying. It is destroying Earths eco system, and hastening global warming. I stopoed driving and flying years ago. Why should I suffer because people like you take no action to help the planet we all have to share?
Good for you! I fly much less now so I’m excited to get a less nasty comment from you soon.
Even worse. They have a hard time to have stewards that speak french, even within Canada. I'm actually very suprised they told you hello-bonjour at 2:08.
That's a real shame. I just rode 'The Canadian' and every single crew member spoke French.
Hi there Patrick, another great video. I’m a United loyalist, so fly the airline a lot. I like the PremiumPlus product. It would have been good if you got to experience Polaris, which would have given you access to the United Club at NRT (many people really love that club) and the Polaris Lounge at LAX. It’s a nice cozy lounge. For a twelve months (late 2017 to late 2018), United ran a daily flight from LAX to SIN, I took it many times. It was, at the time, the longest route for the carrier and for a B789. If NRT/LAX started raising concerns about ETOPs and what-ifs, LAX/SIN would have made you positively nervous. The distance was 8,770 miles, which was about 200 miles above the operational limit published by Boeing. The plane was weight restricted, though it carried lots of cargo on the 18 hour trip. It wasn’t uncommon to see many empty seats and standby passengers abandoned in the terminal. Safe travels!
I'd very much like to fly Polaris, maybe this year! I remember that LAX-SIN flight existing and it was gone by the time I got round to looking into it in more detail (I'm tempted by the Singapore Airlines to JFK route). I can imagine the nervousness that some people would feel about that route!!
@ United is expected to take delivery of another eight to twelve B789s this year. Rumor has it that Boeing will start delivering a new variant, increased growth weight (IGW), in the fourth quarter. The IGW variant is expected to have a longer range, adding 500 to 1,000 nautical miles. It would be a game changer for United, as EWR/SIN or LAX/PER would be possible routes. Also, last year, United surveyed frequent flyers about what sounded like an enhanced version of Polaris. There’s lots of speculation about what’s going on, but the favored rumor is that United is going down the Lufthansa/Singapore/British Airways route and adding a true first class-maybe six or so pods-to these newer B789s. Time will tell.
Thanks Patrick, always enjoy your fun facts in your dulcet tones - great review
Thanks, Richard!
Was this the green car?
Yes, it's was in the green car
Flew that flight in January 2024. Nice not having to wade through duty free to get to an international flight. Also nice taking half a day to get to NZ rather than a full day if I have to fly via mainland capitals. Now for flights to Christchurch please?
Yes, Hobart Airport is just a nice size to navigate without all the faff.
Been on the nozomi and despot it’s incredible speed, it doesn’t feel that fast when you’re on it 🤣
You're 100% correct!! You're just chilling and then look out the window as Japan whizzes past!
Great video Patrick, I'm going in a couple of months. Any tips on how to access Internet and phone whilst I'm there?
If your regular service doesn't work, I'd use an eSim. It gives you data, although not a new phone number. When I'm away, I tend to use WhatsApp if I need to make a call (or Skype, Messenger, whatever suits). To support the channel, please use the link to the eSim I use on my resources page here (it's the same price either way): thisisplanetpatrick.com/travel-resources/
@PlanetPatrick thank you Patrick, I really appreciate your advice and will follow it up. All the bast. Gwen
Only for people willing to blow government and corporation money away on 'business' trips.
Neither was me, but I guess that could happen
Wife and I did the scenic plus. I give it a resounding 12/10! Everything was PERFECT. Bucket list trip for sure.
Sounds like you had a good trip!
I would love to do that trip ❤ Thank you for sharing your experience and tips.😊
You should if you get the chance! Thank you for commenting.
I love the look of Japanese sandwiches, but I must admit that when you said your favourite was egg, all I could think of was "They're egg aren't they, Mrs Doyle?"
Now I wouldn't have said egg if I were at home! There's something about the soft chewy Japanese milk bread and the unholy amount of mayonnaise in the mix that really works!
Lovely clip Patrick, I do like a hard copy, mainly because I am old & only have a Nokia phone !!. For no reason at all I would have chosen Cherry Blossom Class - It just rings true. Happy Travels
Love the idea of Cherry Blossom!! I believe it's more or less the same, just a slightly slower train! So that's no big discomfort.
Next, a Gran Class video. Is Gran Class really like First Class on an Asian or Middle-eastern airline. (I mean like, forget European or American airlines as a comparison for service and quality!)
Yes, I'd love to go back and try out Gran Class. I believe it's not quite like first class on Emirates, but it does have personalised service, food at your seat. Any other videos I've seen make it seem very comfortable but not quite 'closed door' seating on a plane.
Love Japanese trains. Happy and blessed New Year to you.
Thanks Simon
Fast !! Go go Pat
And so silent! Loved it
I love this place. Super nice staff, tasty food and the portions are huge. Good prices. ❤
Thanks for your view!
John key bought the train company off NZ that's how he made all his money he then sold all the land next to track for the stations. So now it can't run as there's no station land very sad what he did he's a very evil person made millions selling off the railway land set him self up then took control of NZ and ruined it sold everything to china
This was not something I had read
Simply marvellous!
Indubitably!
International flights have always been pretty good with AC. Domestic not so much, and I would always prefer Westjet.
I'm asking myself if I agree with you - I probably do, although in coach, the seats can be very tight on international routes with WestJet.
Silky smooth landing..
Which was very nice to have!
Hi Patrick i watched your other video of you travelling by train from christchurch to grey mouth and enjoyed that. im glad i decided to watch your journey to queenstown on the bus also. That was 25 minutes plus the other video spent well. thouroughly enjoyed them both. Thankyou for the content.I have subscribed to your channel.
I really did enjoy that bus tour too, it really finished out the entire trip from Auckland to Queenstown. Glad to have your subscription.
Great video Patrick and awesome meeting you at the food tour downtown last week
You too! Hope you're keeping well!
hi, i wonder if you still have video, to post a second version raw footage to enjoy echos fireworks ambiance? please? ty in advance
I do have it, but there was so much additional noise (including from within my hotel room) that I couldn't get a 'clean' version of it, sorry about that.
Looks amazing! Hope you enjoyed Vegas! Do you have any major travel plans/destinations for this year(2025)?
Yes, I had fun and visited with some friends there. Lots of plans coming for 2025!
I wish you a happy healthy and successful new year 🎉 The fireworks are beautiful
Thank you, Therese
We travelled on Scenic+ TranzAlpine 6 months ago we got fantastic service , went on the Bernina Express 2 months ago and got reasonable service but as good as the TrazAlpine, in fact we bought the return trip a week later and cancelled our rental car, that's how great it was. We are now planning a return trip to New Zealand to ride the comparable train from Auckland to Wellington.
If you get the weather, the views are great on that one too. The Bernina Express is on my wish list for this year!
@@PlanetPatrick You have a point about the no table issue (apparently now rectified), yes you can't beat the Bernina for scenery, although there are some amazing train rides around Switzerland largely unheralded. Great scenery and 1st class can be ridden on a daily pass for very reasonable costs. The Bernina run could done on the same line on a local train 1st class for a fraction of the cost, wonderful train trips to destinations can be had out of Chur and Interlakin (One to avoid is the name trains from Interlakin to Montreux). Trains in Switzerland have no food and drink, even the Bernina was only trolley service.
Happy new year, Patrick!
Thanks very much! The same to you!
lol I’m flying air canada form Dublin to Toronto to see my brother, usually fly air Transat, was excited as air Transat is horrible, and first thing I see…
Ooopz sorry!
Thank you for sharing, it brought back some very happy memories. I travelled around on the Intercity buses for a month,. A great experience, stunning views and met some amazing people.
I’m so glad it brought those memories back to you and thanks for sharing
Went on it a couple of years ago. Wasn't really impressed. Overpriced and overrated.
Good to have your experience. Was that shortly after Covid closures?
@@PlanetPatrick Early 2023. I guess it didn't impress me much scenic wise, because I've travelled by train through southern Switzerland, northern Italy, British Columbia and other places with pretty incredible scenery. But I also thought it was expensive by comparison.
Hopefull the new XPTs will have will have quite a difference between between 1st Class & Economy. Dont reckon more leg room & more recline is a reason to call it 1st Class. Everything is the same as Economy. Except for those 2 differences.
It’s a pretty tight margin between first and economy to be honest.
Thanks for taking time to make this. Lucky you didn’t get scammed from HK Express. I got scammed with not having my middleman on my boarding pass. Their web site doesn’t have a field to fill in middle name.
I hadn’t heard about this problem 😬
This is scenic carriage, not sure why they gave you this carriage, I travelled on same for scenic.
I had, too, on the earlier routes.
However some people like to pay for poor service, that‘s their choices
Indeed it is
Loved this video…wherever you are Merry Christmas Mr Intrepid🌟🌲🌟
Thanks, Clare!
Many pax bring their snacks. Its no big deal..
I mentioned it because HKE staff said it at least 3 times. So clearly on some flights they make a big deal of it.
First, Welcome to Hong Kong! Secondly, as a Hong Kong resident I agree your comment about HONG KONG EXPRESS. Next time if you flying from Hong Kong again I recommend you to try another budget Airline in Hong Kong and it names call Greater-Bay airlines. Which are the new airline in Hong Kong. Most of the people were surprised of their service as a budget airline
I think I’d choose a full service airline next time, but thanks for the tip!
low cost carrier with the high cost parent mentality, that's a sure to fail formular, not the first though 😊
I suspect that’s right!
I wont take hke besides cpa
Okay
A lot of passengers sneak in their food.
Oh do they?!
Yeah ofc they do. Its no big deal really @PlanetPatrick
Your flight departs at 9:55am but they have another flight for Osaka departs at 8:55am. So the final call is for the 8:55am flight.
Well that makes total sense and explains my confusion! Thanks for noticing!’
The snacks policy reminds me of the worst of HK. At times it's just plain officious and rude. Other times though it's amazing :)
I have had a few very fun visits to HK - I suppose I just found the rule a bit bizarre!
Terrible policy about food and drink, even though hong kongers would do anything to not buy overpriced water and food but still
Many LCCs have this type of policy, such as scoot
To be fair hk express’s food isn’t really overpriced
Maybe it’s my cultural ignorance that doing this is normal in HK more widely?
That’s good to know!
@@leafbottle9420 Name some more haha. I can only think of scoot.
Stupid airline
