Quick interview with Jacob Fuller, new products and single sub experiment!
Here is a short interview I was lucky enough to get with Jacob Fuller. We discuss the single sub experiment and some new products on his list. I also had the pleasure of chatting about Robot Underground, and 3 vs 4 inch coils along with some other juicy gossip off camera. But some things are best left unrecorded! ;)

twice the cone area, 1/2 the distortion and way less voice coil heating because the same power is split between two drivers. Other than having to buy twice as many drivers its a great musical solution without the issues a ported box requires.

I would like to mention that It could also be the build quality and sound insulation in the cabin as well. Something like a Lexus or Mercedes would sound loud on the inside but not as loud outside I would think.

Does it matter where the rear port opening is located in relation to the front port opening? Should it be closer to the front opening or all the way in the back of the box?

I've been thinking of swapping my 4 sa 12v.2s with u12v.2. I have a 4th order box built to spec for the sa v.2, but i feel like the uv2.s would do fine. Im also running a big boss 8k, and the sa12s are taking it like a freaking champ(4 months strong). I bet the uv.2 can handle it better🎉

I have often wondered if port depth especially on the front should be roughly min 4x the Xmax and maybe as much as 8x considering XMech if the subs will be pushed to their limits. . Once a depth is accounted for say a X12 is around 30mm so to be safe 8x30 240mm so 5 to 10 inches does make sense. Then, maybe try the largest Sq in. where the port calculates to about 9 or 10 inches deep for your tuning. This may help some people physically / mechanically damaging their subs when the port possibly unloads.

Why would you run the same subs if you have twice the power? That’s my dilemma. 750 watts x 2 12’s or 1 15” with 1500 watts. Would a better quality 15 that can handle more power be louder ? Thanks

I think a lot of the tapping out is due to the frequency most flat walls tap you out above 40 hz. Most people in 6th order don’t even really like over 40 hz they love the lows lows and low frequency at 60 is different that higher at 60 for sure . Just my point on the situation ?

Im having the hard time finding out port size for a round port. Dd 9515 in a 5 cube box after sub on a m3a mostly rap and r&b and a daily in a old muscle car. I was looking at maybe 40 hz. I came up with 6in port maybe 15inch long.

nope. that is not what happens. the port acts like a litteral pipe. due to its length alone it will have harmonics. allso the air in that port has mass, and will resonate. you can measure, a drop of Fs when the port is big and long, vs when its short and skinny. both tune to box to the same freqvency, and the effect on Fs can be modelled by approximating the air mass in the port. not a huge change, but it is what it is. the larger change is the port harmonics freqvency. if the port is supper huge, the port resonance will actually have a bump in output. whitin the desired passband. and you will end up whit a sub, that actually plays midbass too. can be efficient enough that a 2nd order crossover will not manage to tame it. you end up whit a very bright , mushy sound. and lack of sub sound. in fact, imagine if the port is just as big in surface area as the box panel where you plan to put it. yess, that ends up as a TL. ports are a transmission line load on a sealed box, but allso have a helm-holtz resonance. that simple. aim for about 18 m/s port velocity Fb, and yer good to go.

I want excellent sound quality to play whatever the musician puts in the music, so it should be 20s and punchy; if the musician/producer puts it in the mix, I want it. I do not care about spl and playing loud. Willing to have 4x8's or 1 12', whatever works.

After all my life having ported subwoofers, the destiny sent me 2 sealed 10" Revel B12 subwoofers, with 1000 watts of beast power, they are the best performers I ever had, they deliver super tight bass, really impossible to hear from ported enclosures of any size. The only thing that I noticed with sealed enclosures is that you need a much better driver and a stronger amplifier to play music.

I was told to get a sub that is atleast 12", designed for sealed enclosure and has RMS power of 1500W or you are going to be disappointed. And they were 100% correct. I got Alpine SWR-1542D ( on paper is better in sealed box), a 15" with RMS power of 750W. Built a box to spec and I was 90% disappointed. Everything below 40hz dropped off very quickly and even in the 40-80hz range was just not bunchy enough for me and I don't even like super loud bass. I rarely listen music over 85-95db.

i'm an addict for low range extension, my biggest gripe is that all these prefab boxes are designed to peak at ~32-35hz. been strongly considering back n forth between a single brahma 15 in a sealed box, or a ported box tuned to target 25hz. zero idea what the practical solution will be yet.

Current subs recommended enclosure 1.5- 2.75. current box 1.7 cu ft each. Leaning toward adding a 3rd 1.5 each running inverted. Drops load to .67 ohm so more amp power too.

This would've been way way louder if the DSP was setup correctly. With how we are running a JL amp as a 12 channel DSP we forgot to reverse the polarity on every other channel of the bass outputs. What that equates to is the back 12 subs moving one way then the middle 12 moving the other way and then the front 12 moving the same as the back.... Basically 12 6.5s in a box way way to big. If we would've noticed that we missed it in the software it would've done well into the low 160s

nice work,do you know anyone that does designs these days for money ? im bored with what i have even though it digs down low,i have a 2 door 05 blazer totally sound deadened like over a hundred pounds of deadener with two X 12's with a 8 inch aero port it hits super low and loud,i also have a 18 inch nsv4 in my closet,i wouldnt mind talking with someone about doing something new, maybe something more windy if possible, life is flying by you know so hey,why not,im a old school basshead and i really like the idea of new designed enclosures like the tap horn or paraflex or whatever its called, one of my favorite boxes was a bandpass with two 12's back in the day,and it had a sealed side on the bottom and then the upper part came up a little over a foot or so with a removable lid that had a 6 inch piece of pvc dead center,it played amazing on all types of music but when i popped in a bass cd like bass 305 or something omg it came alive so yea anybody doing anything holler back ok.thanks
