I think my chicken possibly might have a slightly different sound for ground versus aerial predators but I can't say for certain. I can say they definitely alert for both.

There's a video with a dairy mom who taught all the cows their name and when it was their turn to be milked she would call them up. She said that if one was slow to respond another cow would give the one a butt to let them know. So they would learn each other's names too.

Raising chickens for nearly 40 years. I have ordered chicks by mail many times and only use a heating plate (I’m vehemently against lamps). I’ve never had a chick die. However, I’ve been very careful to never order my chicks until the weather is sufficiently warm!!! For me, that means no earlier than end of May. If they are already fighting starvation, add the stress of no mother, confused in a cardboard box, they can’t see anything and now must also fight against cold temps during transport - it’s going to be crisis. Make sure the temps outside are warm when you place your order. Late spring for some parts of the country are even too early. They need warmth!! Just sharing my experience, I hope this helps xo

Once, a HAWK landed on our fence like probably 10-15 feet away from my birds and they did not care, they continued with their life.I looked at my birds like they were crazy and went to go shoo the hawk off. To be fair, the hawk probably wasn’t attacking cuz I was there and maybe the birds knew that.

I dont know why roosters are banned from many cities and suburbs yet non stop barking dogs are ok. Thats the one thing I hate is hearing barking dogs constantly barking over nothing, just because they hear a sound or know you are there, even when you go about your own business in your own yard

I was just looking on Amazon. You can get rolls of camouflage netting for less than twenty dollars. That would be ideal: it looks natural, is long lasting, doesn't trap air like plastic sheets, gives the Venetian blind effect like any shrub, and can easily be cleaned with a hose. Assemble a PVC frame for cheap, then attach the netting with zip ties. Problem solved. 😊

It’s so wonderful to hear you talk about the importance of maternal chicken care! One of my Sumatra hens hatched out a chick this spring. She did tidbiting for her for three months and put her wing around her at night until the chick was almost as big as the mother. This pullet is very exploratory, extremely confident and Healthy - a wonderful bird. Thank you so much for recognizing the absolute truth of this.❤❤❤

Hello, I have noticed recently at roost time my flock being extra loud, pecking each other, pushing each other off roost. Coop is 13×10 6 roost bars 2- 12ft 3- 10ft 1- 5ft I use hemp bedding deep litter method. I haven't seen mites/lices. I have 33 birds in this coop 3 rooster 29 hens. I do have several girls molting. Is this the reason for their aggressive behavior? They do not act this way during the day. 2 of the hens have gotten so upset they've moved to youngster flock in my other coop. Anyway is there anything I can do? Or do I just have to wait out these sassy grumpy birds?¿??? Any advice is appreciated. ❤❤❤❤

Abolutely young a possible. The sooner, the stronger they will imprint. you talk to them, give them "warms" and teach them to eat, and drink. wE carry the in a pouch around our necks against our bodies when they are really small. They go to a brooder at night; but are eager for touching the next morning! You become mommy. First human foods they taste are pre chewed. It's a heavy commitment but worth it; the more time you spend tending them in their early weeks, the more committed they are to you as adults. Thank you!

My chickens free range in the entire back yard, but due the shade, what little grass and other greenery was there, the chickens have destroyed. I would like to plant shrubs that the chickens won't destroy like they have done to everything else.

I’m in the midland of South Carolina and got my chicks from Mcmuray Hatchry. They were more hatch and shipped September 30th. I recurved them October 2. Once the caught on to the water and food the race was on. They ate non stop for 2’ hours. Under the heat plate back out eating again. They are almost 7 days old and no pastry butt. Have moved them to a larger brooder and they are still happy campers. I must admit they have gained speed like nobody’s business. These little suckers are unbelievable with their speed. I’ve had them fit 3 days. Lord help us in. The next days. lol

Thank you so much or this. Call me insensitive. I've raised chickens a long time but never related to what you have said and most all chicks have been afraid of me. I've been on a lifelong quest to find the friendliest breeds because of my ignorance. You may have helped me, and my chickens, more than you know. I have a young group about 4 wks old that are going to be raised differently, despite they are being raised under a hen. I'm excited at the prospects of having a different ending to the usual story.

I haven't really seen a pecking order with my chickens. They all get along great. I only have 3 chickens and had 4 for a while until I had to rehome one because she wasn't doing well in the heat. Chickens absolutely get aggressive when you have to mix existing flocks. Eventually they get along but even with tons of space food things to do they still get aggressive. Been through that too.
