I have seen several of my babies to it as well, but as @TwanDelRio said, I likewise thought they were trying to focus in on me, so now that I know this, I will constantly be harassing all of my chicken children to see what words they will pin their eyes to...Lol!! This is so exciting to know!!!
I also had a "special needs" hen. Her name was Rhody. She was partially blind and had a lot of balance issues. When I would carry her and look her eye to eye (because I would tend to test her vision), I noticed that her pupils would expand and contract. I didn't know it was eye pinning. I simply thought she doing her best to focus. It was a coincidence that every time I would examine her eyes I would always chant her name. Wow, it's very touching to find out that she was having a happy moment. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.
There's a video with a dairy mom who taught all the cows their name and when it was their turn to be milked she would call them up. She said that if one was slow to respond another cow would give the one a butt to let them know. So they would learn each other's names too.
My roo is eye pinning. I watched him do it today. He has a few words he likes--his name, "Buddy." But also, "Good boy" and "Mama loves you." He likes baby talk and he likes me to talk to him in the evenings before bed when the girls are grazing. He is such a flirt.
I've always noticed eye pinning in my parrot when he gets over stimulated and is going to bite. So I've always taken it as a warning to remove my hands QUICK! My chickens all know their names, even the new girls I got a few months back. I say their names often when they are near and I'm offering treats. I also greet each one as they come out of the coop every morning. And I touch them and say their names during head count at night before locking up the coop. People who visit are amazed my chickens look up and come when their names are called. Though they might be slightly spoiled.... Nah....

Love this!!! Was noticing this the other day. I taught my chickens their name by feeding them blueberries one at a time. I’d call their name and lean toward them with the berry and they’d jump up to get it!!! Got to do it fast with more than a few chickens and it was a work out for my brain too😂

I say good morning to each chicken as I let them out of their coop. I've noticed that some respond to their name. I'll keep an eye on their pupils. This was very interesting. Thanks for sharing!
I learned chickens can be voice trained the first time I raised broilers Had a hen with a crooked beak that lived about a year till just a few weeks ago. She sought me out when I went into the coop or their enclosure. Deeply interested in helping even if simply by being there. I never underestimate what they can learn. I remember seeing my mil's parrot eye pin for the first time. Totally freaked my husband & I out. I will have to remember to say my chicken's names & see if over time they will respond. ❤

Every morning, when I let my ladies out into their aviary (I can't free-range as I'd like) I take the time to cuddle and coo at as many of them as would let me pick them up. I noticed the eye pinning, and I've heard about it in parrots, but I never associated it until just now. It's kinda nice to know that it seems like they love me back.
After watching your video I went out to my chickens and talked to my roster his name is Sonney. I was telling him what a good boy he was and sure enough his eye winked I was so tickled.it's neat to know this stuff. Thanks for the info.
So cool to learn this! Of course I had to go test it and all of my girls eye pin when I say their names. I was a little surprised that my newer rescue hens do as well. They were on the streets before being here and quite skittish. A few are starting to be snuggle chickens. Seeing them respond happily to their names makes me feel like I'm doing something right and giving them a place they feel they belong. I just wish I could get them to better integrate into the flock. I think since they experienced scarcity and scary things (no coop or access to feed before we got them), they aren't as nice to the other hens or as good at sharing as I'd like. Hoping they can learn that there's enough and they don't need to compete. If you have any advice, I would be most grateful!
Glad you mentioned Zach George! There's another wonderful trainer on the same lines. Her name is Susan Garrett. Those two dog trainers are the only ones I trust now. I have been to many places, seen many other training videos, but these two trainers have the dog's best interest in mind or in this case the animal's best interest! The techniques can be used with any animal including a cat!
Among many other animals, I have 9 geese. 7 have names. 6 of those know their names. I have noticed eye pinning in my geese and chickens but didn’t know it had been studied, was a communication tool, nor had a name/phrase. So interesting! I will be doing experiments with my birds now.
Love your content! I never knew about Eye Pinning, but now I'll look for it. My neighbor and I have a "Chicken Tunnel" (He has a proper coop, and I have a modified shed) so the chickens can decide when they want to roost. We need to raise some chicks and your previous videos give me confidence I can do it--Thanks!
I dont have chickens yet, but love learning about their behaviors. This is the first I've heard of eye pinning and I really enjoyed the research you looked up! 😊 Great video!
we have three isa-browns, Barbara, Geraldine (the flying machine) and Meep, Meep has a bit of a crooked beak, luckily it's not at all a handicap, she's nicely getting along... no special needs at all, Geraldine has been ill and needed some antibiotics, had to force-hydrate her, that actually became easier and easier after a few times, like she trusted the procedure after a while... nothing beats the view of them three coming running flapping their wings when they see one of us.
Please make the video of how to train them to know their name. I have noticed eye pinning in my birds from the time i was a young child but i never knew why they do it! So thank you!!! 😍 All of my girls do it i have five chickens now and now that i know what it means i will be paying closer attention when i am talking to them. Thanks again!! 🙏💖🥰
Also, having had parrots before, I thought this was perfectly normal and known for chickens to do... had no idea this was so undocumented! I'm going to try and get more videos, go through my videos to get more shots of this. It's 100% a thing I've seen on the chickens I've bonded strongly with.
My chickens and duck know their name. Although they think their first name is: hi, and their other name is: tippy toes, doodles etc 😂. As soon as I name them I always use it. They also love selfies! I will hold my phone so they can see the screen (front camera), I will start this when they are young chicks.
6:25 I blow dried my chicken lucky (her name) and I gave her a bath idk if she liked it but she sat still for the blow dry SHES my fav She has a bath just because and after she was so soft
Hello, I have a flock of bantam chickens. I actually see a lot of eye pinning in my birds but I was familiar with it so never thought twice about it. I did not however know that it was a form of communication. I’m close with my whole flock but I have one little bantam rooster in particular who loves belly rubs and cuddles. I’ll have to see if he eye pins if I call him by his name, however when he’s sitting on my lap I will bring my face close to his and make eye contact with one eye. This is when he will start eye pinning and gently closing his eyes
Thanks for watching! Have you seen eye pinning in your chickens?
Yes but I thought they were trying to focus their eyes on me. It makes sense because they do it super exaggerated. Like half of their eye area.

I'll have to check her out. I used Zac George's methods to train the aggression out of my roosters. It was surprising how easy it was. :)
Among many other animals, I have 9 geese. 7 have names. 6 of those know their names. I have noticed eye pinning in my geese and chickens but didn’t know it had been studied, was a communication tool, nor had a name/phrase. So interesting! I will be doing experiments with my birds now.
Mine eyepin . I always thought it meant they were thinking. Like when my mules chew after being told no.
That is so funny. I have an Ethel May too but she's a Buff orpington
I love this video! Thank you ❤.
Thats awesome ❤
What an amazing video! Thank you for this fascinating insight into our chickens! The best "scientists" are those who love their "subjects."
Whoa! Now I have to pay closer attention to my girls.
Thanks
mind blown im gonna look for that
Love your content!
I love your videos!!! I have learned a lot with you, thanks!
we have three isa-browns, Barbara, Geraldine (the flying machine) and Meep, Meep has a bit of a crooked beak, luckily it's not at all a handicap, she's nicely getting along... no special needs at all, Geraldine has been ill and needed some antibiotics, had to force-hydrate her, that actually became easier and easier after a few times, like she trusted the procedure after a while...
nothing beats the view of them three coming running flapping their wings when they see one of us.
Besides the eye pinning did you see sasha lurch her head forward when you said her name
I have, I just didn't know. Ty😊😊😊❤
My chickens do this too! I would love to know where you source your beautiful chickens? I love your videos!
Wow EdieB did it a lot!!!
I enjoyed this video so much. I love your channel and have learned so much from you. Thank you!
Love your videos ❤️ 🐔
Please make the video of how to train them to know their name. I have noticed eye pinning in my birds from the time i was a young child but i never knew why they do it! So thank you!!! 😍 All of my girls do it i have five chickens now and now that i know what it means i will be paying closer attention when i am talking to them. Thanks again!! 🙏💖🥰
Excellent
I never knew about this. But I'm going to be looking for it.
I've noticed this too! I also just love the cute cute cute twitchy twitches they get when they're super happy.
Also, having had parrots before, I thought this was perfectly normal and known for chickens to do... had no idea this was so undocumented! I'm going to try and get more videos, go through my videos to get more shots of this. It's 100% a thing I've seen on the chickens I've bonded strongly with.
I would love to see those videos if you get them!
Wonderful🐔🐥 thank you so much ❤❤❤❤
"Chip Chip"
My chickens and duck know their name. Although they think their first name is: hi, and their other name is: tippy toes, doodles etc 😂. As soon as I name them I always use it. They also love selfies! I will hold my phone so they can see the screen (front camera), I will start this when they are young chicks.
6:25 I blow dried my chicken lucky (her name) and I gave her a bath idk if she liked it but she sat still for the blow dry
SHES my fav
She has a bath just because and after she was so soft
Hello, I have a flock of bantam chickens. I actually see a lot of eye pinning in my birds but I was familiar with it so never thought twice about it. I did not however know that it was a form of communication. I’m close with my whole flock but I have one little bantam rooster in particular who loves belly rubs and cuddles. I’ll have to see if he eye pins if I call him by his name, however when he’s sitting on my lap I will bring my face close to his and make eye contact with one eye. This is when he will start eye pinning and gently closing his eyes
