  • If you have even ONE rooster in your flock, you'll need to have a few hen saddles on hand. In this video, you'll see what happens if you don't use hen saddles (warning: graphic content included).

    I have 1 hen with this problem I have 16 hens 1 rooster only 1 hen has some feathers missing so I'll try the saddle we only had the chickens for 1 year now so thank you for the advice I had no idea this was a thing.

    In my experience, the number one cause is too many roosters. There should never be more than one rooster per every 12 hens. The second factor is amount of room. I have had a single pairing of a twelve pound rooster and one hen, with no damage when they were allowed to free range. Great video.

      I know in the wild, it's very common to find one junglefowl rooster with one junglefowl hen. Your point about having enough space is a superb one!

      I have 1 rooster and 23 hens! But 8-9 of them are missing feathers on their back and on the top of the neck. Idk what to do! Because I have plenty of hens for my one rooster!!!

    I'm finding hen saddles create new and different problems and wondered if you had any experience or could speak to that. I don't see the following issues addressed anywhere. My primary concern is that I don't think they can dust bathe properly. Moreover, I've noticed some hens can't reach all areas of their bodies to preen or pick off mites and lice. We've had an infestation of lice (and I may have seen some mites this last time) twice now in only 1 1/2 years of chickening. Both times were when I had over half my girls covered with saddles. Taking them on and off and separating the roosters is a huge undertaking once you have over 30 chickens. The other problem is that sometimes the saddles come off while they're out free ranging, get twisted around a wing, or just flip over when they're being mated, creating no barrier whatsoever. Once I found a hen dangling from a tree by her apron. Yikes. I have tried over 6 different brands and the ONLY ones that do anything are the Chicken Chick aprons and Down Under. But even these aren't consistent. The Down Under brand restricts grooming quite a lot and the Chicken Chick aprons flip over quite frequently on my hens. Some hens seem to do better with one style or the other.
    We've been trying to conceptualize a rooster pad for a while now since our ratio is too low even after adding lots of hens, but that's another saga mostly due to the fact that our two #2 roos have a long standing vendettta against each other and I'm not sure they can actually resolve their differences, though we may try again. One is now a one-eyed pirate and later lost an entire spur, that sadly no one noticed. I think it happened when I went away for a family wedding :(

    We don’t have a rooster and two or mine are missing feathers in the same spot. I assume it’s from one being a bully.

      Me too- I was hoping to get an answer to that as well. I have seen her picking at it herself, so I'm not sure if it's just that she is a nervous chicken.

    OMG! Finally found information about this! I been trying and trying to find something on the internet and could never find it or understood it. I'm new at keeping hens and giving them happy and simple life. I recently bought a chicken that already had this problem. And she still dose. I looked up mites, lice, roosters. but we don't have roosters! But WHY isn't she healing? she looks exactly the same as the thumbnail. she a barbrock hen. and after watching this, I think she is on stage 2! PLEASE HELP. you didn't tell us how to treat it. I have 5 Hens in total. and I have recently seen another chicken casually pluck a neck feather, but both acted like it was nothing??!. NOTE. she also has a Beare Neck for reason I don't know! :(

    • @thefeatherbrain
      @thefeatherbrain  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I'm assuming you bought her from a flock that had a rooster or roosters? Is it the back of her neck that's bare? If so, that's VERY common - same cause as the bare backs. The rooster bites the neck feathers to help him balance during mating, and with very frequent mating, he ends up ripping the neck feathers out.
      When you say she isn't healing, I assume you mean the feathers aren't growing back? If her skin is damaged, it should be healing. If you're worried about sunburn, you may want to put a hen saddle on her until the feathers grow back - unless it's very hot where you live - see my most recent video about that topic - th-cam.com/video/PjV_PcSSCVg/w-d-xo.html
      Don't worry about her feathers not growing back. I have found that my hens' feathers don't typically grow back from this until they go through their annual molt (when they lose and regrow all their feathers for wintertime). Some people's hens molt in August, but mine typically molt in September and October (and some don't molt until later).
      Chickens will occasionally pluck out a feather from a friend (and even eat it), particularly if the feather is loose, has something on it (like a speck of dirt), or is disheveled. And sometimes just because. Don't worry about that unless it becomes excessive.
      Best of luck! 😊

    Thanks for the information. My first rooster is maturing and starting to try mating with my hens (he seems to really want one of the older hens, who isn't happy about it, and ends with him squawking and running away).
    I purchased a hen saddle to have on hand a few weeks ago, though I might have to look into better ones, sounds like I'll need more anyway. 1 rooster to 7 or 6 hens (one I'm still not certain on the gender).
    Is that too few hens? I certainly won't be keeping a second rooster if the 7th ends up male, but I have somewhere to rehome him if needed.

    • @thefeatherbrain
      @thefeatherbrain  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've kept 1 rooster with 6 hens before. As long as you put saddles on when needed, they will likely be fine.

    I absolutely love all ur videos!!! I have a silky in stage 2 bc half the flock was broody and she’s getting mounted too much. How do u put the saddle on and fit it. She’s not going to like it at all! Do u take it off when she heals and full flock? I do follow the chicken chick as well so I can look there as I already have her saddle. My silky looks awful. Only one. Her head feathers were ripped out too. She was my prettiest too. Anything u suggest for her head too?! Rooster has 6 hens but 4 were broody and now 3 were and hatched babies so I know I need to get a saddle in her.

    I have a rooster who is around 3 months old...and wants to mate with anything that moves...my girls are the same age and freak out when he comes near due to his aggressive approach...he's not a gentleman nor are they mature to understand without the chicken dance...he is an Americana Easter Egger...which I had hoped he would be a good rooster, I see potential, but am tired of him stressing my girls out and pulling their feathers...any advice? Should I get rid of him, separate him...they all free range all day, no confined space for any of them...love your content and appreciate your time.

    What if this is happening but you don’t have a rooster?

    • @thefeatherbrain
      @thefeatherbrain  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It could be a number of things. Perhaps a molt? Or maybe they've gone too long without molting? A lot of really good layers (like Bovan Browns, etc.) sometimes go multiple years without molting when they're young, which can result in the feathers getting in bad condition. Another common cause of missing feathers is a lice or mites infestation - have you done a close check up of vents, under wings, etc.? Those are common places to spot the critters. Another cause could be hens pulling each other's feathers out, usually from boredom or nutritional deficiencies.

    What do you do when the top of the wing is all broken feather ends? I was waiting for them to moult but it didn’t happen. Do I need to pluck out those feather shafts?

    • @thefeatherbrain
      @thefeatherbrain  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Don't pluck them - that will be incredibly painful and will possibly result in quite a bit of bleeding, opening them up to infection. Eventually, those broken shafts will molt out. It can take months, but the best thing to do is let it happen naturally. In the meantime, if you need to put a hen saddle on to protect the skin on the wings, please do so.
      Best,
      Bri

    Ah well that explains it. Two roosters ten hens. Looks like one of them gets to go bye bye. One thing though is the three most promiscuous hens also have feathers missing on the backs of their necks and heads. I think this is from the roosters trying to balance themselves by grabbing them by the back of the head and pulling feathers and I don't see any way to prevent this even with a saddle. Any suggestions?

    • @thefeatherbrain
      @thefeatherbrain  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You need to figure out what's causing it. Are they attacking each other and pulling feathers out? Or are they just going through their annual molt? If it's their annual molt, this is a natural process that happens each year and the feathers will grow back soon.

    • @thefeatherbrain
      @thefeatherbrain  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, they will grow back during the hens' annual molt, which typically happens late summer or during the fall. I've found in my flocks that younger hens molt later (fall or even winter), whereas as older hens molt earlier. My mostly geriatric flock is molting now.
