Black Hills and Eastern Railroad
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 ต.ค. 2019
Welcome to the official TH-cam channel of my HO scale Black Hills & Eastern Model Railroad! We'll look mostly at model railroading. Homesteading, cooking, firewood processing, outdoor power equipment, distance running will be other topics of discussion.
Experimental Model Railroad Weathering Powder Results from Chimney Sweep Chores
We burn firewood for heat indoors during the winter. As the exhaust rises in the chimney it cools and collects on the liner walls. This buildup, called creosote, is flammable. That necessitates an annual chimney cleanout to prevent an unwanted chimney fire. I am making an unexpected use out of the product that lands in our firebox as a result.
We show you the chimney sweep operation and some other chores we accomplished on the same fine June Saturday in 2024.
Finally, several weeks later, we land back in the shop and experiment with applying the powder on a couple of railcars that I hadn’t yet finished onboarding into the system. The application of the weathering isn’t perfect, but I think with some practice and mixing this with some other weathering skills, this could be a formidable tool for weathering my HO scale trains.
Here's the episode I referenced during the video about bringing the birch wood for kindling home from my SIL's place and the Stihl MS291 repair: th-cam.com/video/o2KVKXm_rMk/w-d-xo.html

I give a quick update to tell what I'm working on this week on the BH&E! I am installing tortoise switch machines. I explain the drilling jig that I'm using as well as the pinout for the electrical connections to make the Circutron Tortoise switch machine work correctly. A longer episode explaining all this in more detail close to follow!
South Dakota Shortline D&I SD40-2s and Rip-Rap Train Waits for Detour on BNSF

Errand running in town turned into a rare and unexpected shortline foaming incident today. Flooding in SE South Dakota in June 2024 resulted in a bridge on the BNSF at North Sioux City IA being washed out. This was D&I's link over former MILW track to Sioux City IA. D&I now temporarily detours over BNSF Corson and Marshall Subdivisions to access Sioux City. I modeled D&I's first trio of SD40-2s...

The Traeger basically replaces our oven during the summer as we aim to keep the heat out of the house during times when the A/C is already running hard! This pie is 100% scratch made with rhubarb that is growing here on our property. ...

Great idea! The results were very good.
@TwoRailfans Thank you John. I'm still looking for some improvement. Would think this would work REALLY well on black coal hopper cars!
@@blackhillsandeasternrailroad hint taken. 😂 I don’t have anything to clean like that though.
@TwoRailfans Sorry John! Wasn't talking about you! I have a string of coal hoppers that I've never shown on the channel. They need this treatment too! With regards to the weathering powder, I probably have two lifetimes' supply here for both of us and all the regulars on the channel. Would send you some if you decide you're interested!
amazing ,never would have thought of that , thanks
@jimkruszka3817 Thanks Jim. Always on the lookout to reuse stuff... when I noticed that stuff stuck to my hands, it reminded me of what the guys say about pan pastels and other self-adhesive powders... This is definitely that. Except only available in one color!
I still love accurail and roundhouse kits
@tunnelmot Me too! That old FMC hopper car has aged really well as has Accurail's slab side model. Still looking forward to seeing new releases of both. I keep meaning to pick up a rock island car from Accurail. Think it would be a fun patch/weathering project.
Meet too🧹🔥..ya clever bugger🖌🎨👍
@4everdc302 Thanks!!! Just put the finishing touches on the video for Friday!
looks like fun
@jimkruszka3817 It was! I've been meaning to do this for a very long time. Just finished editing and uploading the long form video.
Good info…where’d you get the tortoise drill template?
Thanks! The Mfr is 'BVI Rail Tooling'. Can no longer find the template anywhere. I got it in 2021 off ebay.

You can hear those sanders!
We will be okay if we don't lose a unit halfway up the hill!!!
Yes awsome 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
@ianconder1626 Much love for that green and black!
Wow, those locomotives look like they have very fresh paint!
@TwoRailfans D&I is a class act. Clean locomotives are part of a larger corporate image philosophy. I'm lucky to call some of the railroad employees friends. Good people, all of them!
Great update and explanation! I know getting these done will be a big step with moving forward. Where did you get the template for the holes?
@TwoRailfans As of just now, I have 13 of them mounted. About half done with the staging area switches. Still need to wire in the panels. Those edge connectors will be a big help. I can't find where I got the template now. Seems like I got it from ebay or a vendor... Midwest Model Railroad or Spring Creek Trains? Ugh. I'm getting old.
@TwoRailfans Ugh. Looked back in my ebay... I bought it in 2021. The Mfr is 'BVI Rail Tooling'. Can no longer find it being sold anywhere. It is handy but lots of people mount Tortoise machines without them.
Attractive paint scheme.
@154Colin Agreed. So much so that I decided to bend the time continuum and allow these on my layout set in ~1985-1995.
@@blackhillsandeasternrailroad I won't tell, if you don't.
Pretty cool.
That's one snappy paint scheme isn't it?
This heavy metal piece of Machinery is absolutely gorgeous, what an astonishing amount of horsepower 9000!! Absolutely unheard of before!! Totally spellbinding!!🤘🤘💙
Thanks for watching!
Nice locomotives
Thank you very much!
Nice locomotives
Thank you sir!
An All BoxCar Freight. Is Beautiful. Can I tell you what would make it better? Cowl Unit Diesels.
@rottenroads1982 Your point is well taken. I don't have any F45s on my roster. Originally, I was saying they didn't fit my era, but I have other BN stuff that predates even the 45 series engines leaving the roster. I have no excuses. Since the point of this train was to be colorful, maybe even some Canadian power? An SD50F or an SD60F? The green F45s are definitely on my list!
Great information…got the BLI C30-7’s…run great…haven’t run them lately…need to get them out of the box 😊
@georgiasunbelt I've never heard much about the BLI C30-7. Do yours run with the original electronics? They came out shortly after I left the club I was in and I never had a reason to buy any being I already had a pair of Atlas C30-7s. I'd be interested in seeing your big black C30-7s running!
@@blackhillsandeasternrailroad yes…one is a NS paragon 2 & the other a NW…the NW is DC that I’ve never had a decoder installed
Beautiful locomotives! I always appreciate your research and information in your reviews. I was glad to see a caboose running too. 😎
@TwoRailfans Thank you very much! I always appreciate that information at the beginning of a locomotive/railcar review when magazines like MR and MRH do reviews. Figure some of the people that look at BH&E would like it too. And I'm somewhat of a locomotive nerd... Love to track an engine's history back to build. However, these GEs are pretty historically uninteresting!
🤠
Thanks Randy! Seems like the Rock had a few big GEs too?
Nice looking engines. Like the weathering on the third unit. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks John! I discovered some years ago that Polly-S, roof brown, shot out of the airbrush, makes good weathering. My approach these days might be somewhat more nuanced, but I'd still make use of that concept. Probably going to have to find a different paint though as Polly-S is no longer made.
かっこいいです!!
Thanks for watching!
@@blackhillsandeasternrailroad I like the GE U23B the most among conrails. I used translation for this article.
This museum is a great stop I agree.
Yep. Made a special side trip to see it. 10/10 would do it again!
Yes this was a good stop and well worth it.
Perhaps the best public model railroad display in Colorado if not west of the Mississippi River!
Pretty cool runby and layout scene. Awesome train. 😎👍🏼
SVMES has a very nice layout. It has gotten bigger and more mature since this video was taken way back in the day!
Thanks for sharing. Power looked awesome going across the gate🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲🙋
Yes, for sure. SVMES has an amazing layout!
Now that is cool! I would love to see more videos of this layout if you have them.
SVMES has a really neat layout. More here: th-cam.com/video/0sdvlY-EM8U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=w0_4FORtGz0NeAlv. I will probably do another spot on the club before the Train show in November.
Good job
Thanks Ian.
Nice boxcar collection.
Thanks!
Awesome 👍😎👍
Thanks for the visit!
Looks delicious! Thanks for sharing the recipe and step-by-step guide on making!
@anneruppert9864 It was our pleasure bringing it to you!
Nice job on the decals! I have to say mixed freight is my favorite type of train to run. I just like the variety.
10/10 agree. I'm terrible at train shows. If it fits my era and looks cool, I'm buying it for a mixed freight train! I like the variety too!
Looks great!
Thank you! We are getting there!
Good Job Ada showing Dad how to make pie.
Thanks! We are learning together in the kitchen.
And still cut the trip pin off even after fixing the coupler. Trip pins are just as bad as horn hook couplers.
@pilarvalleyrailway3121 As long as you are okay that you never will want to do magnetic uncoupling, rule #1 is in effect. I agree they can be a pain in some cases, but I'd never go back to the X2F coupler!
Coupler height gauge is a real asset! Had this problem before.
@johnhood9567 Yes sir, just as the NMRA standards template and a postage scale are a big help!
@@blackhillsandeasternrailroad got the scale. Huge improvement! Still need to get the NMRA standards template!
The trip pins are the first thing to go. Absolutely not worth the hassle.
They should not be any hassle if the knuckle is at the correct height. But I get it that the aesthetic isn't right and that those who don't need magnetic uncoupling have little use for them.
Fantastic boxcar collection! Very cool history! 😎
@naxshack Thanks for watching! I had a lot of fun putting that video -- and the train together!
Sweet dude.
@OklahomaRailfan_Productions I love working in the yard!
Really cool
@jerryrigsit5400 Thank you sir!
That's a lot of $$$ right there but beautiful
Luckily much of it purchased a very long time ago!
@@blackhillsandeasternrailroad I'm sure, one piece at time and probably some bargains along the way too
I had to see your SD40-2, and it is looking really sharp. I hope to be able to paint a locomotive amazingly like that eventually.
@trainswithjake Thanks! You'll get there. Practice on something inexpensive. Don't be afraid to make a few mistakes.
@blackhillsandeasternrailroad your welcome and I will.
Nice! I have one of these for BN in my collection
@Patrick-xp8bb Sweet! I think the BN bicentennial units are some of the more tastefully done ones of that era.
I used to live in Wisconsin and had so much beautiful Rhubarb! But now in Florida and my mom who doesn’t have an oven craves Rhubarb Pie. Any recipes to help?
@robbiet8583 My mom used to make Rhubarb strawberry sauce... something like this? www.food.com/recipe/strawberry-rhubarb-sauce-49068 She'd serve it over angel food cake. I'd imagine though that it is difficult or expensive to find rhubarb in FL though?
That looks delicious! Ada did a great job! We try to avoid heating up our kitchen in the summer too. We are supposed to hit 105 today and 106 tomorrow. 😮
@TwoRailfans Yikes! Lawn nerds take shelter! The pie was amazing. Stop by sometime and we'll be glad to share!
Rhubarb pie is good!
@154Colin Agreed!! Taste of summertime!
@@blackhillsandeasternrailroad The house where I grew up we had several plants Rhubarb. We had Strawberry Rhubarb pies. Occasionally if the yield was enough she would freeze some to make one for Christmas. I miss that.
