How to modify an RC prop to fit a minn kota trolling motor

Hey all, as of now there are limited props APC makes that directly fit a trolling motor, so in this video I show you how to make almost any RC prop fit a minn kota trolling motor (55lb or below). Which prop you think would fit my Newport vessel #46 thrust?
@@seanpatun9875 I'm pretty sure the shaft diameter is the same between Newport and minn kota.... But I'd recommend the 10x5m-lh prop
I wonder if that 10×5 prop will fit my Newport vessel #46 thrust motor? Anybody know? Great video btw, i use to own that same inflatable boat you have!
@@seanpatun9875 I believe they do work on the Newport, if not then they are like 7$ so worth the try I'd say, I've heard minn kota and Newport have the same prop shaft size

@@SargesAdventures that's great to hear, have you tested to see if it's drawing as much power?
Informative video, thanks for sharing!
an rc prop, really?
@@zenza8464 sounds crazy I know, these specific props I've tested are for a trolling motor, APC has a designated section on their website for marine props
Just came across this video and find it very interesting. My question revolves around using this prop with the trolling motor that guys use in their gps controlled motors as anchors with the spot lock feature. These are heavier boats that need to move a lot of mass quickly. However, weeds are rarely a problem when you are in the open water. A prop designed for weedy situations will not be the same as one designed for open water on a light boat. Also same challenge when trying to design a prop for a 18' bass boat vs one for a 25' center console. Still, I really appreciate the work you did with this video.
@@MrStoshb no problem, I also wonder how it would do with a gps motor, let's hope someone tries it, I personally don't have one, but these props are cheap enough it would be worth a shot
My kids have the boats I am describing. When I see them for thanksgiving I will bug them to try this out. Fairly cheap and easy to test. @@codyakfishing8856
is the floor hard or soft?
@@0wnToDead it's like a roll out type floor, but the slats are a hard plastic, close to a 1x4 size, makes it easy to lay a piece of plywood in it, but I haven't yet
Nice little kayak. I have the Hoodoo Impulse 105 fin drive which is heavier. I just added a Bixby electric motor to supplement my ability to travel further to marshes that hold fish. I just fish the Salt.
@@ronnstone7023 thanks!!!! I wanted the impulse for the layout, but I dona lot of close to docks ultralight fishing and love the instant reverse, someday I'll cave and get a trolling motor for it
Love to hear from you in a year or two to see how the Mariner 4 has held up?
I haven't used it much lately since buying a pedal drive kayak, but as of now it's on its 8th year, some patches here and there but still holding strong!!!
I really appreciate this information.
@@matthewharr6372 np, hope it helps
Would you say this is an easy kayak to stand up in? Last two kayaks I’ve bought that claimed to be stand up worthy were not stable enough to stand in.
@@jonathonkersting9043 I'd say so, I'm 6'3" 190 and I can jump in it, I mean if course it's a tad bit tippy, not a boat but I myself can stand and cast pretty comfortably
@@codyakfishing8856 appreciate the response and information. In terms of handling chop on a lake,,, do you get a lot of splash over the bow when peddling into the wind ?
@@jonathonkersting9043 np, yea I do get some chop over the front, it's not a real sharp bow since it's only 10', hoodoo sacrificed speed for stability, but I just creep slow through the chop and it all works out good for me
So how does this work on a minn kota terrova 80lb thrust on my 16ft aluminum boat???
As long as your shaft diameter is the same as a 55lb thrust minn kota (sorry idk if it is) then it should work out fine. You can always drill it out a bit to make it fit
Nice job on this comparison
@@davidnix8250 thank you!!!
i like the speed aspect but am curious how the APC props handle weeds. the Stock prop chews through them in the 55lb thrust
@@levitch these APC props do get tangled up in the weeds, which is why I'd only recommend them if you can access it easily to clean off, for a trolling motor mounted on the back of a kayak I wouldn't since you'd have to beach it to clean it off
I keep thinking your going to kick your fish finder…..hoodoo owes you buddy big time…. I know I can’t be the only person to pull the trigger on this yak because of you….THANK YOU for your vids I subscribed
Thanks you, sorry been way to busy this year to make more videos, but for what it's worth the kayak is holding up great, and I haven't kicked it yet lol
A+++
I tried to huli ( flip) my mariner 4 and its a super stable Vessel. And thats completely empty. I love those boats. The need more D rings and mounting spots, but other than that they are great and safe if the Captain is also!!!!
They truly are a really good boat for the money, had mine nearly 9 years and still going strong
Cat was a paid actor…. Be nice to him!
Did you have to make the slot bigger for 55# pin on the 10x5
No, it fit on without an issue
Got mine, (10x5) the NV 55 has a 1x1/8 pin so I had to mod it. With my motor clocked for extra rpm, it averages 4.8ish on my pwr 100 loaded down. Prob 5 if it's just me and no tackle and anchors. My 10x4 avg 4.5
@@JonR35 oh I didn't know the NV had that size of pin, but I'm glad it's working for you, I'm assuming your saving on power as well
My 55 new port with the motor clocked for an extra few hundred rpms with 10x4 on my pelican pwr 100 hits 4.9mph. I ordered the 10x5
Very nice, I think the 10x5 is going to be a little quicker
I have been using APC propellers for over 15 years in my RC planes. They use powerful testing software and real-world testing so that you know you are getting a better product than the rest out there.
Jeez, you could go ~15 miles on that 10x5 prop full bore for nearly 4 hours, assuming you have a 100AH lithium. Or 20+ miles at 1/2 throttle probably.
2:03 in video, where can i get those plates? i bought kayak from someone and mine doesn't have the plates ( if they were supposed to come with kayak)
wow thanks
I think, the lighter the boat, the better is the air plane prop. for heavy boats the standard prop should be better.
You may be on to something, I'm going to have to test that out....
Just get cheap fish finder and use that for speed
The standard prop will shed weed, where the aero props will get tangled in it.
@@peterworsley4699 I'm going to be testing more props in the near future
That placed gets fished to death, always has been since I was a kid in the 1950s, I've never seen anything big come out of there, maybe a 5 pound carp or 2 pound catfish. above the dam is good for small mouth Someone mentioned the Muskingum River, there are some absolute monsters in that river, I used to have a place near McConnellsville, I used 100 pound line at night A couple of times I hooked fish and they would swim down river , then up river , then back down river and you had to either cut the line or have your gear destroyed. At night , it sounded like someone threw a body off a high bridge sometimes lol. Don't know what that was , probably huge Muskies. My neighbor used to catch 40 and 50 pound catfish to feed to his feral cats, he used ropes tied to a tree with a 1 or 2 pound carp he left laying on the bank all day and a huge hook
I caught a stringer full there way back in the 60s
@@rodneycaupp5962 awesome, I wish I can go back, what did u catch exactly???
I did everything you have plus clocking the motor speed controler / lithium battery. Made it to 3.8 knots with a 35Lb thrust beginning speed was 2.2 knots. Last 4 years I've had a torqeedo 1001 4.5 knots flat out just over one hour it's been great battery still going strong.
I just caught 2 back to back at this very same spot with the ned rig today 🤣🤣

@@mynewsmma8057 if u like trout it's good, but I've been worn out ilon them for years now..lol
Before anyone runs out and buys one of these APC props keep in mind that they get tangled in the weeds very easily and when they do they don't want to turn anymore and it amps out the motor creating hot wires and possibly tripping the circuit breaker.
@@WillSelbyKayakFishing 100% correct, I'd only recommend them on watercraft where you can easily get to/clean the prop off. Back of a kayak isn't ideal
@codyakfishing8856 if you turn your prop left or right then gun it in reverse you can clear the weeds but it's a pain in the butt and heats up the wires pretty good.
Codyak Fishing - It's been a little over a year since you made this video. Are you still using the APC props? Have you had any issues in that time? Which prop did you settle on?
@@DeanMk1 I've been meaning to make a follow up, but truth be told I'm a bit low on funds and can't get my little boat registered, I've used it a dozen more times and settled on the 10x5m-lp and haven't had many issues with it, other than some weeds now and again
I have 110lb 24v haswing motor. Based on your experience would you suggest 10x8 or 11x6 apc marine propeller? Looks like my motor makes max 630 rpm
@@tarassymonik7603 hard to say, but to me it's cheap enough to try all 3? Just make sure to use an amp meter and make sure the amps don't go above the recommendation. But if it were me... I'd try the 11X6, the 10x8 did go faster... But it did draw a lot of amps

@@jevans1550 wind doesn't affect it too bad, if your going into a heavy wind water does crash over the front but the hull stays dry, I wouldn't mind going in the middle of a larger reservoir.... It's the boat traffic that scares me more than the kayak itself... Handles great in larger waves!!!
