Growing TOMATOES in partial SHADE

  • We've grown tomatoes in an in-ground bed for years. But as our backyard trees have grown, more of our tomato bed gets partial shade. The shade, combined with a very wet spring here in North Texas, have hindered development in some of our tomato varieties. This video shows what varieties have still produced well in the shade, so hopefully you'll know what to grow in partial shade if you're not able to plant tomatoes in full sun.

I love your feedback! I have been moving my tomatoes around the yard and trying to find the best balance. I don't have any trees in the backyard but we have a shed which puts out some good shade in the afternoon. I have found the tomatoes seem to be happier around 3pm shade line. Hardest thing this year has been watching how much rain we have been getting on the West side of Fort Worth to make sure they don't get flooded out.

The rain this spring was out of control. Strangely enough, I'm enjoying this hot dry weather. Tomatoes certainly benefit from afternoon shade. Thank you!

I had the opposite happen. We had to take down a few trees so my garden started to get a bit more sun. I'd think that in Texas a bit of afternoon shade wouldn't be all bad.

Here in Texas summers, tomatoes definitely need afternoon shade. Our tomatoes are getting shade in the morning and afternoon. That's too much shade for us.

Hi Dina, new subscriber, first video. Looking forward to viewing your content! My cherry tomatoes are in partial shade too. Plants are fruiting, green tomatoes popping up. Do you have any experience or an opinion on pruning leaves to allow for more (dappled) sunlight? I'm wondering if that would be a good strategy. In my conditions I'm not worried about sun scald. But i don't know if pruning (some, lots) would be (too) traumatic for the plant. Hope you can respond. Please & thank you :)

Thank you for subscribing and commenting! Tomatoes always benefit from pruning at any stage of their growth once they are established. Pruning allows more air circulation, which helps keep diseases away. They don't like to be crowded and gasping for air. I always prune my tomatoes.

Good info Dina ! My tomatoes are giving fruit now but a few of them i see they develop a crack, Is that because of maybe over watering? Since most of mine are in raised beds,I test the soil by going about 4 inches deep to check if dry. They usually are so i water them. So not sure what to do to avoid them developing cracks. Any idea's? Thank you !

Thank you! Cracking in tomatoes is due to irregular watering. I'd try to water them more often. Raised beds tend to dry out faster.

The rain this spring was out of control. I'm really enjoying this dry weather when we don't have to walk in a bog. Helping y'all with setting up your garden would be so much fun! Just let us know. 😊

The really weird thing about tomatoes is that they need to grow in an area that has 'full sun', but they need a little afternoon shade 😅 so check out how the Italians do that.

Yes, when it gets too hot, they can certainly benefit from some shade.
