How (NOT) to travel Central Asia 🇰🇬🇹🇯
Our adventure starts before dawn with an escape from the irradiated Soviet mining town of Min-Kush. Leaving the roentgens behind, we soon find ourselves back in the Kyrgyz heartlands and ahead of us lies a long and winding road to be travelled with the kindness of the Kyrgyz people, a sacred mountain and a brush with fate. Join me on a perilous quest across Central Asia.

At the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union were both producing nuclear warheads at rates never seen before or since. Both countries bristled with tens of thousands of missiles, and they were willing to use them. In the USSR’s case, research, uranium enrichment and warhead assembly took place in Russia, but the bottom of the supply chain - uranium extraction - was cent...

Welcome to Kyrgyzstan. Although the Kyrgyz people were largely settled into a life of collectivised agriculture by the Soviet Union, some still lead a traditional nomad life. After a hard winter in the lowland plains, these families bring their animals up into lush mountain pastures, or “jailoos”, at the first budding of spring. Kyrgyz nomadic life is built around horseflesh and this relationsh...

Ancient Persian influence in modern Central Asia is visible not only in its culture and language, but also in its landscape. By the Oxus river, atop a dusty hillock in a windswept desert lies one of the earliest known examples of a dakhma, or a tower of silence. These towers play an essential, if somewhat macabre, role in the disposal of bodies in the Zoroastrian tradition. Once commonplace thr...

Girded by dramatic mountain ranges and having more in common culturally with the Persian civilisations of Greater Iran than the Turkic nomads of the steppe, no part of the former Soviet Union, nor any region of Central Asia, holds the same enigmatic appeal as Tajikistan. They call Azerbaijan “the land of fire.” The Absheron peninsula is dotted with natural eternal flames which are fed by the rich gas deposits that lie beneath the earth. Nowadays the term is more a matter of political sloganeering, but the fires must have had a special significance for the ancients, particularly during the time of Zoroastrianism, which regards fire as sacred. Of course, the locals were suspicious of your presence with your foolish "cover story Request". Nobody is that foolish to believe, that you travel all the way from UK to their village, just to hear their "language". Incredible. What is your real Agenda ? You look very suspicious to me, just by studying your facial expressions and your Eyes, and of course your intrusive (agenda based) "questions" give you away immediately.

Oh My F###### Goodness! what a rollercoaster ride this episode turned out to be! A standing room only, vomit inducing ride out of irradiated Min-Kush .▼. Jumping into the back of a Bishkek bound, open top truck trailer .▲. Almost head stomping 1 of 4 hidden fellow passengers .▼. Epic vistas of the Suusamyr valley along the route .▲▲. A close call with Hypothermia due to the wind, rain and cold .▼▼▼. Catching a ride all the way to Osh from the Kumis junction .▲▲. Ticketed Speeding driver, puking babushka .▼. Safe arrival in Osh, and a well earned 48 hour rest .▲▲▲. A visit to Sulaiman-Too Sacred mountain, where plans to travel the mighty Pamir highway are told .▲▲▲. bloodied face, picture fades to black .▼▼▼. A harrowing account of plunging off a mountain road to river below .▼▼▼▼▼. Every passenger escaping the Opel Zafira .▲▲▲▲▲▲▲. Whisked off to Dushanbe, bloodied and bruised, a fake pair of Raybans the only casualty .▲▲▲. Shaken but unperturbed sign-off, not wishing to disappoint .▲▲▲▲. Thank you once again for taking us along the road less travelled. Sooooo glad nobody was seriously hurt! I hope your adventure down the M41 is much much much much much safer. That's quite a synopsis! Roughly mirrors my enjoyment of the whole thing too, although that truck ride with the rain was unreasonably bad. Glad to get out of it largely unscathed. There's plenty of accidents on that road, and many are not so lucky. I am happy to say that the rest of the trip on the M41 was without injury, although it did involve a close call of a different kind... Thanks for the support and kind words once again :)

And how much does it cost you, I am wondering because its been my life long dream to do the exact same thing once i got the money, I'm just 18 but i would love to start asap with travelling the world and recording all of it.

I work online, so it's a bit easier for me to do these trips, but I meet plenty of people on the road who are just on holiday from conventional jobs. Central Asia is in general very affordable, especially if you opt to travel in the back of a rickety truck lol. You could do a good month-long trip for well under $1k, if you tried to do it cheaply. The website Caravanistan is an essential reference for planning any kind of trip in Central Asia.
