Top Notch Farms
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 8 พ.ค. 2015
We have an 10 acre homestead, including a young high density apple orchard and ever growing market garden. We are regular vendors at our local farmers market, and we want to share our adventures with our garden, orchard, preserving food, commercial kitchen, making cider, and all the other fun and not so fun things that go with having a homesteading/farming life.
Pulling down a tree with the Kubota L4670
Using my Kubota L4670 to pull down a tree that had broke at the bottom and was leaning against another tree. This was getting close to one of our last Fiona cleanup steps

Concrete Pour Setup Part 1
มุมมอง 2988 หลายเดือนก่อน
Setting up a concrete pour in front of one of our out buildings. We are always trekking in mud or gravel into our commercial kitchen, or apple storage. I decided that it would be nice to have a cement slab in front of the building for extra work space as well as a landing area for bins of apples.

Trying out our new generator for the first time
มุมมอง 2.2K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
We try out our Baumalight KR30 baumalight.com/generators/en/kr-models.php for the first time. After our last hurricane (Fiona) we were without power for 13 days. We were lucky to have had a friends PTO generator so we could run our well and other important items, but the writing was on the wall that we needed a more permanent setup. We had our electrical hookups all done, but this is the first ...

Three Gardening Mistakes This Year (and planting pumpkins in plastimulch)

Giraffe Tools Retractable Garden Hose Reel - Unboxing, installation, and troubleshooting
มุมมอง 1.5Kปีที่แล้ว
Our existing yard hose is leaking and has been repaired numerous times, so I unbox and install a Giraffe Tools Retractable Garden Hose Reel 5/8 inch. Unboxing, installing a 6x6" pressure treated post, mounting the hose reel, connecting all the fittings, discovering a problem with the winding mechanism, fixing it and then testing. Might have sprayed my wife while testing as well. 00:00 Introduct...

Introduction to @TopNotchFarmsPEI
มุมมอง 11ปีที่แล้ว
Hey folks, just a quick introduction to myself and our farm. We have a 10 acre homestead with a high density apple orchard and a growing market garden. We have a few cool projects on the go this summer - a new solar panel setup, commercial kitchen upgrades, and a ton of apple tree trellising. I love learning from youtube, and watching amazing people do interesting things, so I figured I might t...
I've had good luck companion planting with dill.
Thank you very much!
How's this hose reel holding up?
4x4 not stakes this is great did you dry pour
Dry pour? No I had the cement delivered premixed.
@@TopNotchFarmsPEI nice job
any leaks with the mounts? great share by the way!
None as of yet. I used to have a few screws in the steel with small leaks. I had hoped this might actually cover them on the side they are installed on.
💔 "promo sm"
Thanks for sharing details of grid-tied PV🌻 From decade of experience designing systems like yours, I highly recommend getting at least essential loads on back-up! Owners repeatly say " After first day+ grid failure, we are so glad we got back-up & could use our solar!!" 🌅🗽There's nothing more frustrating than utility power going down and you cannot use your PV energy😮
So I would need to buy equipment that would allow those items to run without the grid? Would you be able to point me in the right direction? I do have a whole home generator, but yes, in the middle of the day with the power out I do understand my solar can't do anything.
@@TopNotchFarmsPEI Eventually you can get a Hybrid Inverter + Battery Bank, seperate your most desired / essential circuits to keep on (without generator), seperate part of an array (micro Inverter AC ouput) or connect new dedicated sub-array to Hybrid inverter to keep few of these loads on- AND off-grid back up. Saves having to run generator for days (& noisey nights worrying about fuel or frozen genset maintenance) if grid is down for more than a few hours! Your local installer should know how to integrate a hybrid inverter. All the best on living by the Sun... Freedom gets to be normal & Peace of mind is priceless 🌻🗽🌅
Roger, so I would need those parts, and then to move those circuits to that subpannel - makes sense. The goal would be batteries as the prices come down, but I do like the suggestion for that smaller system. I don't think my installer would have any experience with this unfortunately (as this wouldn't be that common around here). You think that would come with any warranty concerns? Thanks for the input
I'm going to guess you will make about 28000 kwhrs a year with that system.
The vendor is estimating just under 33,000 kWh
@@TopNotchFarmsPEI I'm in Manitoba and we actually get a ton of sun if it wasn't for these forest fires being so bad this year. I have 7.425kw system and I average 7500 kwhrs in direct south facing. But the pitch of my roof is 4/12 so I think that hurts production in the fall to winter months. Jan Feb I don't bother with them to much other then clean the snow off for safety of the roof not getting to heavy with snow. Great system though I hope it works out great for you.
Great system. Will you consider battery storage to protect you from power outages?
Our hope would be that these systems would become more affordable as time goes.
Looks great. 47kWpv down south of you! Wood burner below 25F.
28kw? Damn thats about 100k cost without batterys. I spend 1200 dollars a year on electricity. Thats a hell of a long brake even for me. Maybe in my great grand childrens life time i may break even. I do like solar, its just not there yet
It’s not even close to that
Where I live a real 15.4 kw system is 52000, real out of pocket money
I specifically talk about the exact costs in the video. If you only use that little then you would need a much smaller system. Our electricity costs a lot in our area as well.
@@dadandlokiinthewoods8806 What is your kWh rate?
For a typical home use if you buy the stuff and put it together yourself you can basically be off grid for $6-8k. A little less if you are really handy. In a house your HVAC is basically your biggest consumption. Get a mini split or two. Get a heat pump dryer. Then it’s easier to switch to solar.
Hi! What racking system and rails did you use? Thanks
Pionpwr Racking, Triac Optimizer Mounting kit
Thanks!
Trees might cause some shadows in wintertime when sun is low and weak already. You sound Canadian so wintertime will be weak already. Other then that, great system, hope it will serve you well and earn back a lot of money.
There are two pine trees on that hedgerow that are marked for removal - I might record that as well. I am on the east coast of Canada, and defiantly we will be doing our max production during our spring/summer and then using those credits for the other portion of our year. I sure hope it works well and 0's out our power bill.
I would take a look at those 2rusty bolts on your trailer hitch
I'll check them out, thanks for the heads up. It did just pass an inspection, but no harm in double checking!
"Who needs a Gym Membership.... just buy a Farm!" Haha. Quote of the video!
I wonder which is more expensive though?
