No, I don't use anything like that. But in my experience, the prints are quite durable. Hope that helps!

Using a hairdryer might lead to cracks in your print, so I wouldn't recommend that.

Thanks for the praise. If you have all the necessary materials one day should be enough. Be aware that some of the print might get cracks after drying, especially if you do it the first time. So make a few extra prints just to be sure. Hope that helps!

First, thanks for the video! And a question: doesn't the emulsion start to develop while it is drying?
The emulsion only turns blue under UV-light. So as long as you do this inside with subdued lighting, you should be good. Hope that helps!
I have been a printmaker for over a decade now. When printing intaglio, we use paper that has been soaked. Pretty much all intaglio printers use drywall to flatten and dry prints... An alternative way to dry if anyone cares: Lay your prints down on a piece of dry wall. Cover them with some newsprint (mostly to keep your drywall clean). Then cover with another piece of dry wall. This makes a drywall sandwich. It takes a few days to dry completely. But your prints will be as flat as a brand new sheet of paper-like museum-quality flat. And there is no risk of damage from the iron.
I tried my 1st cyanotype today at a library workshop. We printed on fabric. I think I needed a weight on my glass. I’m looking for inspo on how to spruce up my failed print
A great way to spruce up failed fabric prints is to add some fabric paint or even do some embroidery on top of the print. Hope that helps!

Can you mix (dry) colored pigment with the actual emulsion in order to achieve a colored print? (I saw your earlier video about dyeing the paper with tea, coffee, etc.)
Sadly toning is not possible on glass prints. At least I don't know how. Adding pigment to the emulsion would stain the whole print which could yield interesting results.
Nice work. Shame about the gelatine, which personally I would not use (I am a vegetarian) - but maybe arrowroot might work? Worth a try. Thanks for an excellent video.

Hey I want to ask that my cyanotype print is not staying on fabric when I’m washing it is there any mordant or anything to fix my print and for good durability?
Cyanotype is very prone to fading on fabric when washing, but you can use the solar fast chemicals by Jacquard. They work very similarly to cyanotype, are safe to put in the washing machine, and are even available in multiple different colors. I hope that helps!
Silly question - how come you can dry the plates and mix the emulsion in light? Why isn't it photosensitive in this part of the process, including letting the plates dry? Thanks!
The emulsion is only sensitive to light when dry. And even then it's only sensitive to UV light. So you are relatively safe to use the emulsion in indoor lighting. Hope that helps!
These are all beautiful, but I really like what you did with the glasses. I've never seen anyone do anything like that before.
Have you tried polishing bees wax on to the finished dried image to get a satin gloss finish that brings out the colour (blue)?
I haven't tried that, but I do love the idea. When I have some bees wax at hand I will definitely try that.
what is "washing soda"??
Its also called Natron and sometimes used in backing. The chemical formula is Na2CO3. Hope that helps!

I am wondering what kind of china ink should i use to achieve the red effect? the black one doesnt work... I love to experiment with cyanotype. Thank you for the video, Julian! It gave me some new ideas which i will try out.
There is just colored ink you can buy. I had the best result with acrylic-based ink. If the color of the ink is too dark you can dilute it with water. Hope that helps!

No, with Cyanotype printing I just use the standard emulsion, but if you need something more resistant you might look into the solarfast emulsion by jacquard. Hope that helps!

The glass mobile is a great idea! I thought of using it in some kind of Tiffany glass art piece, although I haven't worked with glass so that might be somewhat in the future.

I have been working my way through the cyanotype rabbit hole , but not finding an answer to my query…. What happens if you use a regular photo transparency instead of a negative? Does it print out as a negative? Hope this isn’t a silly question 🙏
Yes. If you don't invert the image the resulting print will be a negative.

@@ivermectin3191 A standard Cyanotype will always be sensitive to water. But you could use the "Solarfast" products by Jacquard. These are not only available in multiple different colors but can also be set on paper or fabric so you can put them in the washer. They work more or less the same as Cyanotypes, just follow the instructions on the packaging

I tried this process, and had a bit of a problem. Wondering if you could give some advice. I created the solution with the gelatin, let it dry and then exposed the image. When I went to the washing step (trying to be gentle). Some of the dried and exposed cyanotype washed off. Do you have ideas how to correct this? Thank you so much!
During my experiments, this was mostly the case when the emulsion wasn't completely dry or too thick. Ultimately, I ended up drying the coated piece of glass overnight. I achieved a thinner coating by heating up the glass plate to about the temperature of the emulsion. That way it would be less viscous, allowing me to spread it more thinly. Also, make sure to clean the glass plates before applying the emulsion. If none of these things help you might even consider using less gelatine. This will also allow you to spread it more thinly. I hope that helps!

This really prints on the glass or its only a thin layer of mixture, and if you scratch it, it would break?
The emulsion is directly applied to the glass, but yes it is very much prone to scratches. Maybe you'd be able to seal the print with a coat of resin, but I haven't tried that yet. Hope that helps!
Did you do the video about cyanotype on metal? I tried to find it, but i did not see it.
I haven't done that yet. Although I have done some experimentation, it is a bit more difficult than anticipated. Sorry.
If you darken it enough, you will have a print tht needs to be backlit, and I think that would be spectacular.
