Madam Laschanzky: Oboe Concerto in B Flat Major / Katherine Needleman, oboe and piano

Madam Laschanzky is a mystery, and so is her Oboe Concerto in B Flat Major. Her nationality, dates (late 18th century?), and first name are only a guess at this point. I found the parts (there was no score despite my looking very hard) for this concerto in several places on the internet, though the hard copies are in a library in Germany. They were handwritten, potentially in Madam Laschanzky's...

Wow. A substantial and beautiful new work to add to our repertoire. Beautiful playing from both of you too!
Beautiful, Darling!!!💃🏻
At last, an unhurried and highly expressive performance, the Déploration was just breathtaking, well done to both players. Really stunningly expressive 😭
🥰 This is really gorgeous.
Great explanation. I'm a flute-player and as a kid, held my instrument at a higher angle than parallel to the ground because the axis of the aperture of my lips was "tilted" up. Well anyway after about 5 minutes of blowing, my tone disappeared. My teacher couldn't help me at all but I realized by myself that gravity makes for a lake of water at the top stopper which interfered with the air-flow, so I learned to tilt my head a bit so that the water runs down. This has nothing to do with getting water in the holes but I thought I'd present a complementary story. Quite something else: Do you know the Nudelman family of double-reed players? Stuart was a great oboist from NY (he changed his name to Delman) who passed 10 years ago and Barry who played Broadway shows on 3rd reed (Bassoon, T.Sax and Fl.), now retired. Now about Marcel Tabuteau... Liked your Ruth Gipps concerto here on YT. Thank you.
This is a brilliant performance!
Oh wow this is gorgeous. The first part gave me chills and the second was delightful. The Facebook algorithm showed me a post of yours months ago and I've been an admirer of your social activism since. You are doing incredible work. Some of the hardest work and work you shouldn't have to do, but you're crushing it! So thank you for taking it on. And thank you for sharing this video recently. I understand more now why so many BFMs appear intimidated and scared of you; not only are you fearlessly confronting their chauvinism and abuse, but you are a virtuoso at your instrument too!
Beautiful!! I've never heard of Nadia Boulanger, nor her sister. I will search out more of their music. Thank you!!
Wow! So cool! I followed along with the original score and loved how you adapted the cello part. Brava! (Also it reminds me that I would do well to acquaint myself with more of Boulanger's music.)
This is a totally gobsmacking performance!! I am aware as to how difficult the Oboe is.
Gruselig! 😂 Schöner können Oboe und Horn nicht klingen!
Bravo Katherine! (Julie Scolnik)
Did she write this for you? It's quite beautiful! (I was on a tour of China with her in 1995 while playing in the Stanford Symphony, conducted by the late Karla Lemon who was the best conductor I ever worked with. I don't remember the piece of hers we played, but I do remember her!)
I'm sending this to the local school band directors.
Doesn't algae loaded water give you a darker sound? 🙂
A beautiful piece from a composer who should be better known. And beautifully played.
So… good… 🤯
Not bad! However may I suggest that you switch your location with the camera one to benefit from windows lighting on you. And maybe have further reading : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-point_lighting. As for sound, 60 to 100 Hz high-pass filter would allow to suppress ultra low frequency "booms", and maybe ask kids not to shout during recording sessions?
Thank you for this. Superb playing and lovely piece. And you obviously have an overflow of talent for just one person. I often wish I could play the piano well enough to accompany violin and cello concertos. Of course, I never put in the work so, duh! I have more than enough to keep up with my violin craft and be able to play somewhat competently. Thank you again 👍
OK, I lasted as long as the Britten "Arethusa"--one of my favorite pieces for solo oboe. Your playing is so beautiful! I have to thank you and congratulate you for giving us this gem of a performance. And now the Silvestrini is playing. (Jaw drops!) I don't think I will ever have the technique to tackle this piece. Am so glad that you do, and have made this video recording available! I came to this video when I read someone criticized you as betraying the Curtis tradition by not playing with Tabuteau's "dolce" tone. What utter nonsense. The tone is gorgeous.
At first I thought this was hilarious...but then it was so good I decided it was just amazing...hilarazing?
I admire your playing very much.
Molto brava la pianista! Musica troppo contorta nella scrittura e meno bella rispetto allo sforzo che richiede. Clara, nell'ultimo brano datti una calmata: puoi scrivere con lo stesso risultato in modo più semplice.
Natural, beautiful and pure. Thanks.
Maestra!
A beautiful way to remember what was likely a beautiful life. Our teachers live on in us. In this case, we got a sense of her through your (plural) playing. Thank you. I intend to return to 4:36 and study.
Brava!!!
Brava!
Thank you for introducing me to this piece with such a fine performance! Wonderful ensemble playing 💚
This was wonderful! Thank you for all you are doing to make the musical world a better place! ❤ Beautifully played, of course!
I just love the brilliant Needleman twins!!! Fabulous playing by each "sister"!!
Thank you, George!
A major contribution to the oboe repertoire- and an outstanding performance by the entire group. Congratulations 🎉to all!
Thank you so much, Elizabeth!!!
This concerto is beautifull, you did an amazing job restoring it and the performance is very beautifull! Hope to keep seeing progress on the restitution of it to the repertoire
Katherine is the Queen of oboe! Whether she is playing on the water or in a concert hall, her open minded and creative approach to music is truly inspiring.
What an amazing performance! And what a beautiful tone! Bravo!!!
Lovely piece!! Thank you for educating about so many great women composers and especially for sharing this arrangement with all of us!
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you all for such a great performance and I certainly hope that more follow.
Great!
Thank you, Theo-Hans!
Just wonderful! Thanks for the performance!
Thank you!
Thank you for the time and effort that went into reconstructing this piece. It sounds beautiful and is a fabulous showcase for the oboe.
Thank you, SilverMrFox! It was a lot of time and effort--thank you for acknowledging that!--but totally worth it.
Soulful beauty; the music and performance
Hauntingly beautiful and so uniquely performed.
beautiful...comforting, rousing, majestic! i especially loved the section with oboe and piano caressed concurrently ... a great pleasure this morning, thanks
Wow! Inspiring. Thank you, maestra.
Love it.

I thought I had posted on this. But, I can't see it. I found it to be terrific. You let us all hear the full range available to that rare instrument, and in a piece that exploits its sonorities thoroughly. It's also an excellent piece of music, that should be in everyone's collection of solo pieces, if they own and play a bass oboe. Loved it!
Wow, bass oboe! Beautiful piece and instrument!
That's terrific! It captures the unique tonalities of the full range of the bass oboe, in a complex piece that challenges the listener's ear as well as the oboist. Great solo piece for a rarely heard instrument!
Wunderbar !
Thank you!
