I love to forge and create things that can be enjoyed by those who own them.

Making a German Inspired Rapier (Part 1)

In this video, I forge and harden the blade of a forty-inch rapier sword! This is the beginning of a very exciting project where I can test my metallurgical skills and hopefully build an incredible piece of art.

Очень красивые ножи! По стилю напоминают работы Рика Хиндерера.
sehr schönes Messer, gutes Design!
>overcomplicating every step of the process Yep, definitely german
Very dope, just at 4:18 it didn't seem that safe please be careful!
Dope AF results, @caleboppelt3838! Now they need equally dope sheaths to complete the package!
What a handsome looking blade!
Nice work. The blade turned out awesome. I am a bit worried about the distal taper though. The blade flexed which is good, but it flexed mostly in the middle which is a bit concerning. The ricasso (it is called a ricasso on a rapier) was a bit on the shorter side, but that was not a problem at all. If you wanted to make the hilt not rust, you could have blued it instead of sand blasting it. Blueing was done historicaly and it looks nicer than sand blasting. Also would be nice if you could provide the measurements, the weight and the point of ballance. If you would be interested in making another sword (european), I design historically accurate swords and would be thrilled to draw an original design just for you. (Including the blueprints for different parts) Take my offer in consideration. Good luck with your next projects. You are a very talented person.
Beautiful job. I might have to invest in a quality blade sometime!
Using CAD to make your drawing?
Not for this one, but I know how to now!
Agree. Awesome.
Hey! That's me!
Awesome. More!
That is a good idea using the angle iron for ht! I’ll try it!
Hi i like to know how much this knives coast both the skinner n chef knives thanks
nice work sir!
Thanks!
wow thats an amazing piece of steel and craftmanship my friend, well done
Love it, good job!
Weird flex but okay...
4:30 I seriously close my eyes when someone straighten up their swords, its better than any horror movie -_-
I really like these lead ins your videos have. More of that stuff, without sacrificing the forge time would be amazing. For what it is worth, I think you are onto something with the style.
Congrats on your success man. Been a minute since I saw a video of yours, good job and props.
Dude I love this video I learned a lot from it and I'm sure you know what you're doing but be careful without gloves man them wire brushes will hurt like hell 👍
Looks nice but hurt ur hands like mad
Absolutely
A rapier is a fine sword and a cutter. While it is made for thrusts, it was the whip like end causing scores of cuts that would wear down a fearsome opponent in a real fight. German duelists would mark each other in the cheek with one of these slices. As time went on, the stylish fops adopted thinner and thinner swords, while serious men kept blades less likely to be snapped. That being said, these bad boys were often accompanied by a parrying dagger designed to block and >>BREAK<< an opponents rapier. Flexibility and toughness is most important mid blade down and a hard edge holding temper towards the end is desirable. For a budget, you may find some value experimenting with kaolite (kitty litter) as a thermal buffer inside your forge controlling the speed that your steel soaks up the heat; and maybe be strategic in a variable temper?
Only one time I tried to do long blade and it was disaster so I know it can be hard/annoying/tragic at any moment but its still nice project to make :D Also best swords are... European Falchion and Chinese Jian sword :P
Those are both swords I really want to make in the future! Hopefully this rapier won't take as long as I think it will...
For each like this comment gets I'll do another pushup on a sword.
Sharp
That sword is so dope.
Good job, could have hot punched the pin holes 👍
Which manufacturer's steel material do you use for forging? Thank you, and please reply me
Normally I use New Jersey Steel Baron for damascus materials, and online metals for stainless.
Where did you get the 410... I need to know where to get metals to work with
Online metals
How many degrees should be the temperature of the furnace to make Damascus steel?
Somewhere around 2000 degrees fahrenheit.

Great work young man. I love the shape !!! Were you happy with the final thickness and weight ???? They looked pretty thick to start with. I'm anxious to try this. Please let me know . THANK YOU rex
Absolutely
Very good video by the way. Nice knives.
I use a Filet knfe to butcher my deer and elk . Don't own a bowie. I'd rather carry several knives for the tasks they are designed for. Total weight will be equal or may be even less. And 2h3n I loose one knife, I'll have another to get by with.
nice video!
What a blade! Well done man
You convinced me to try forge welding with stainless! I thought it was some mystical and magical technique, thanks for showing it is "simpler" than that! The most important thing is to weld very well and not leave any hole to let the air get through. However very nice power hammer!
I built Jeremy's grinder too! very nice!
It's a masterpiece. Beautiful knife. How long is the blade? How many inches is the blade?
About eight inches
As soon as you did the fake find being I left.
Cool knife 👏👏
The knife is very beautiful, how long is the blade, how many inches is the blade, how many inches wide?
I think the blade was 8 inches long, and got as wide as 1 3/4 inches.
@@caleboppelt3838 Thank you very much for the info.
Хорошая работа, просьба окуратнее работайте с ленточной пилой.
Will do!
