Welcome to The Bird Perch on TH-cam! The Bird Perch is dedicated to "Bringing Nature Closer" by using motion activated cameras at feeding stations to capture both photos and videos of birds and sometimes other wildlife. The cameras are set up around my yard in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Occasionally, there will also be videos posted of more personal interactions with some of the wildlife around the yard. Photos are posted daily at The Bird Perch on Facebook. Sharing all of these amazing birds and other wildlife brings a lot of joy!
Rivals: Pileated Woodpecker & Crow

Pileated Woodpecker (female) and American Crow ❤ It's fascinating to see how these two species of large birds behave around each other! In this video, the Pileated Woodpecker seems more cautious of the Crow. At the end, the Crow seems to scare her off with a big "caw caw caw"! Kalamazoo, Michigan

Good chatting in live stream everybody
Typical birds. The bath is big enough for both, but they don’t want to share.

Shaking the booty 😂
I love the woodpeckers!
those peckers fly like rockets
haha yes they do!
what do you fill the holes in the post with, I love this platform feeder you've made!
I use Pine Tree Farms Log Jammers suet logs. We made the holes about 1.5 inches since that's the since of suet logs usually. Then I break off pieces and squish them into the holes. The woodpeckers really like it!
I never get Crows at my feeders what was he eating there?
I'm not sure what he was actually eating this time. But they do eat a lot of the seeds, peanuts, mealworms, and suet nuggets that I put out there!
I'm interested in what you are placing in the large holes in the center log? Suet? Melting cakes and pouring it in? Multiple logs? thanks...
Hello! Good question :) I am using Pine Tree Farms Log Jammer Peanut Butter Suet! I just break the logs into pieces and push them into the holes. They are somewhat soft so I try to press it in quite a but so they have to work at it a little, especially the crows!
@@thebirdperch_MI I bought a bunch of dried mealworms this year primarily for Bluebirds but they never touched them. In your experience will other desirable birds eat them? They're dried so i can wait till next spring but maybe i can set some out in winter as well?
@@daverobinson8491 I use dried mealworms year round. I originally got them to attract bluebirds. They used to eat them but now they don't come to my feeders very often. But several other birds will eat them. The crows really like them! I have seen many different kinds of birds eating them too! I would definitely try putting them out during the winter to see if you get any takers :)
This is great 👍
Thanks!
Where?

What a Lovely variety of birds you have, and I Love your feeder set-up!!! Did you build it yourself? It seems Perfect for accommodating all types of birds!! ❤🐦 😊
❤❤❤❤
they're doing it!!! the're pecking the WOOD!!!
Like a pro! lol!
Omgoodness, haven't seen this species since I left Canada. So cool
This past spring/summer, we had at least 4 different ones coming to the feeder! We might see more of them as the weather gets colder!
Woody Woodpecker!!
Yes lol!
Also @@thebirdperch_MI, Did you know what he was technically an acorn woodpecker, but made him aesthetically resemble the pileated? Crazy? Absolutely!
Wow! Your videos are always amazing, but this one is extra wow! 😊 Thank you!
Thank you! I love to share these amazing birds!!
They're so cool. I have yet to see one where I live in NC. The only time I saw one in person was in my backyard in FL years ago.
Aren't they just incredible to see in person?
A modern day dinosaur!
Yes!! Love them!
Red-bellied woodpecker seems strange being up north. It is our ‘default’ woodpecker. It is everywhere. I’ve seen it eat bananas on the plant, peck at cacao pods, and drink nectar from white bird-of-paradise (and many other flowers). Once I saw it at one of the sapsucker wells that riddled a coconut tree. It busted open a carpenter nest in the yard a few months ago. The all-purpose woodpecker. Sometimes Downy comes for a visit, but much less often.
I would flip my lid if a junco showed up at my fountain. Miami would freeze over before that would happen. A western tanager showed up last week. Completely unexpected, so maybe a junco May visit, without the freezing over!
I like raccoons🦝
3:19 a.m.there was just a mouse!
The guy with the red crest is a real punk and the all black is a goth 😁
Damn he’s brilliant. Got three on my birthday (May 5th) in a nearby park in 2023. Hasn’t seen it at my homemade fountain (or in the yard at all) yet. In 2021-22 winter, a female Summer Tanager visited for a bath regularly. A nice yellow-orange color all over. Thanks for posting, great video!
These are one of my favorite visitors! There is usually at least one pair that stays near during the spring, maybe summer too. They are pretty elusive! One spring, I had 3 males and a female show up at my feeder and they stayed for several days!
@ I am envious! Scarlet Tanager and I will add, Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, are regular but scarce hard to find in my area. The Blue-Winged Warbler I saw in one of your vids is another tough one. The many ‘northern’ birds I mentioned in another vid’s comments are not possible in my yard. I do get the neat, but dangerous Cooper’s Hawk as a year-round resident. Common urban bird in Miami, oddly.
@ Wanted to ask. Your in Michigan, in a forested area. Do you have Black-Throated Blues nesting? Or Black-Throated Green? In Massachusetts, where I’m from, the BT Green at least, is very common in summer there, and you can hear its song all the time.
Black-Throated Blue! I made a fountain in the backyard, within view from my desk. Black-throated blues are the steadiest visitors. Many visit in migration. Each year, one or two stay through the winter. One of the very different females usually stays; some years a male. This year, as of early November, there is one of each. Easy to keep track of, since they come to bath several times a day. In Miami.
That's wonderful! We only have the warblers for a short time in the spring and fall as they pass through!
@ We get several warblers that stay for the winter in my area. Miami-Dade, along with Broward and Monroe counties (Keys) have the highest number of regularly wintering warbler species, over 20, in the US. Essentially restricted to this small region, and not hard to find, are Magnolia, Cape May, Black-Throated Blue, American Redstart, and Northern Waterthrush (mangrove forests). Some others, more widespread in, but mostly confined to Florida in winter include Black-Throated Green, Ovenbird, Black and White, Northern Parula, and Prairie. Some rare warblers, like Tennessee, Wilson’s, Worm-Eating, Nashville, Hooded, and increasingly, Swainson’s, are annual. Other bird groups, with such species as Yellow-Throated Vireo, Least, Great-Crested, and Scissor-Tailed Flycatchers, Indigo Buntings, and Summer Tanagers, have the same pattern. Migration is ok, but definitely better in the upper Gulf Coast. Caribbean migrants (many stay for winter) and long-distance South Americans (Connecticut, Blackpoll) are the main show here. Not exactly warbler related, but the lack of many familiar winter/ year-round birds in this far corner is remarkable. American Goldfinches, Siskins, Juncos, Nuthatches, American Robin, and pretty much all native sparrows, are not found much. Will add that Cardinals, Blue Jays, Grackles (2), Mockingbirds and Catbirds, Mourning Doves, and some other ‘abundant’ species are just as numerous around here. I have 7 painted buntings (two male, five ‘greenies’) that visit the yard all day, which, while not unusual, is a treat! Hope you weren’t bored with my local bird news. I enjoy seeing your vids, and I find the similarities, and differences between the two places interesting.

I saw a junco this morning on my way to work, in the middle of a downtown area!
