Hiking 🥾 | World Travel ✈️
I love being in the outdoors and I've spent many years hiking throughout New Zealand and the world - both on and off track. New Zealand has some amazing outdoor recreation opportunities.
Through this channel, I'd like to share some of my experiences and inspire others to get outdoors and enjoy what New Zealand and the world has to offer.
I thru-hiked New Zealand's 3000km long Te Araroa Trail from Cape Reinga to Bluff in the 2022/2023 season, and I spent just under five months backpacking around Europe in the first half of 2024.
Currently, I am a student in Princeton University's Class of 2028, living in New Jersey!
If you made it this far, I would really appreciate it if you subscribed to my channel and followed my adventures :) Your engagement will always help me grow my channel and improve my videos in the future.

This is Norway. 🇳🇴 (4K Cinematic)
Norway is one of the most beautiful countries I have visited. This video is a compilation of some of the wild arctic nature from my 5 week trip to Northern Norway (between Tromsø and Bodø via the Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands) in March/April 2024.

Hey man. I love the outdoors but I'm 38 and never learned to read a topo. I am not familiar with them yet, but I thought your video was informative and straight to the point. Idk if you are still making content, but your channel should definitely have more subs!
You really had fun with your drone and the footage ties in nicely with your earlier videos. The quality is great too - what drone are you using? Hope you have a good work/leisure balance in the US before you head back to NZ. I’m sure you must be tempted to see as much as you can before you head back home!
Great vid JP, stunning. Look forward to talking with you next time I'm up the valley xx
Thanks for watching!! Awesome to talk to you the other day 😀
Absolutely fantastic, really enjoyed it!
Thanks so much for watching!! Glad you enjoyed it 😀
I was your busdriver from Fredvang to Å that day.👍😉I see you enjoyed Lofoten.😃
Thanks for the 3 part series Jared. I’ll be back in NZ December and although in February I did the much shorter loop River Road-Central Whirinaki-Mangamate (didn’t stay there - arrived too early)- River Road I’ll definitely do the longer loop as you did. I didn’t see another soul, neither in the huts nor on the tracks but it might be a bit busier in December? I was really excited to have great views of my first ever whio, near Central Whirinaki hut. Later several more further along the tracks. I can’t see why they seem programmed to expend so much energy exchanging those strange noises to each but each to their own! The slips looked ‘interesting’ but you obviously made it out OK! Maybe DOC have done some maintenance since (but probably not). The bush was just magnificent the whole way - that’s something I really miss. Can’t wait to get back to it!
Have just found you and loving watching your travels! I’m interested to know what you’re using to film with - is it just a Go-Pro with a gimbal?
Hi, thanks so much for watching!! I just use my iPhone to film with a tripod and an external microphone. It has pretty good stabilisation, so it seems to work pretty good! Thanks for following 😊
Such a beautiful country, love the lake and Gorge near Bled. Your an inspiration and looking forward to Morocco video.
Thanks so much for watching!! It was definitely a beautiful country to explore! Looking forward to seeing your next video from Australia 😊
The helmet is for rock falling from the hills, hills are quite steep. a few years ago some lady died cause of a lose rock tumbled down... otherwise super video i love it. im happy to live in Slovenia its truly a pristine nature...
Hi, I'm looking for someone from Slovenia to help me understand the easiest way to return to the parking lot from the gorge. Do you know the area well?
Ahh that makes sense! I can see how that could happen. Thanks for watching, it’s definitely a beautiful country 😁
Good to see Jack doing some work for a change, CAT power, matatoki
😂😂
Why the protective gear at Vintgar Gorge? One word: Americans (from USA). They bang their heads on the rocks, they drown in the stream, they break their arms when making selfies, etc... Sorry about the 10 EUR fee, but it's not our fault. We just don't like to get sued by crazy tourists.
Hi! About the helmets, somebody was killed there a few years ago, cause of falling rocks...so......
Ahh, okay that makes more sense then! Thanks for watching!
Hi, great video! Just wanted to comment on wearing helmets in Vintgar gorge. In the past there were some serious accidents where visitors ended up in the hospital, because of falls and falling rocks. I assume, for preventative measures, they decided to enforce wearing helmets.
Ahh, okay that makes more sense! Thanks for watching 😀
Slovenija❤❤❤
Amazing country!! 🇸🇮😁
It s true!!!!! My homeland!!!!@@onthetrailnz
you look like ISTJ
could you see northern lights in april?
Yes, I did see them a few nights, but the first time was on my 18th night in Norway - it was just too cloudy in the first couple of weeks, but then it cleared up and I saw them just about every night!!
Very interesting and informative thanks. Like you, I couldn't help thinking that the gorge walk would be free and not so restrictive nor crowded in New Zealand. Looking forward to seeing you in Morocco!👍😜
Thanks for watching!! It was definitely a bit of a change - I guess a lot of it's because of the enormous amount of people in Europe compared to NZ. Hopefully I'll get the first Morocco video up soon! Hope the flight to Canada went well :)
I know it’s a few months since you were in that neck of the woods before you headed off to Morocco and Iceland. You certainly chose contrasts! Shame about the drone ban. That would have been great in the desert areas. Anyway, looking forward to the next instalments.
You were off season too, but try visiting the National Parks in August! We visited several a few years ago and although beautiful they were ruined by the number of visitors. No helmets then and I can't possibly see why they would ever be necessary. Just covering themselves I guess, and attempting to justify the entrance fee? In NZ, apart from a few honeypots (e.g. Tongariro Crossing) it is so easy to escape the hoards. We're incredibly lucky in that respect. Isolation and a small population has its advantages!
Haha yes, the temperature differences were definitely quite noticeable!! It would have been awesome to fly the drone in the Sahara, but still got some good shots from the ground 😀 I’ve been a bit slow on the editing lately with starting university, but I’m getting back into it now and working on the Morocco ones and some of the drone videos from Norway as well, so hopefully I’ll get another video up soon 😁
What a beautiful lake, great video, good job JP.
Thanks for watching! It was great to catch up again last week 😀
Can I get pinned. Love from Nepal!!
You my friend need to get learn a lot. Calling Slovenia a Balkan country, calling the capital of Croatia Zagreeb. Ridiculous.
That's awesome you're trying to learn English 😂 Every published atlas, Google Maps and Apple Maps list the capital of Croatia as Zagreb. I realise Balkan people like to argue with their neighbours about everything, but is it really worth dragging a New Zealander into the debate?! And Slovenia is a Balkan, although this is just another point Balkan people like to argue about - so many arguments!!
@@onthetrailnz Zagreb yes, but not Zagreeb. You pronounced this ee like i in Madrid. Balkan is a Turkish name for the mountain in Bulgaria. Some German idiot decided to call the whole region that name in the 19th century. Both Turks and Germans are just the occupiers in the region. Whoever uses the name Balkan for the region and the people od the region is doing it in a derrogatory manner. Shame on you ignorant.
Congratulations on being arrogant enough to be the first comment that TH-cam has held for review and flagged as inappropriate!! As far as the pronunciation of Zagreb goes, here is a place name from my home country: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu It would be great if you wanted to send through an audio recording of you saying that so I can critique. Or you could try Te Kuiti if you want an easier one. Thanks for sharing your view on being called Balkan and I'm sorry if you found it derogatory. I know quite a few people from the Balkans who proudly call themselves Balkan people. I'm lucky to have met them - it's good to know that there are good people in the region as well.
@@onthetrailnz You continue being offensive. Do as you wish. I don’t care if someone is not happy cause I don’t accept occupation. Including TH-cam. People who accept occupation are called kvislings. I tried to help you pronouncing Zagreb correctly. If your mission is to never do it, it is also fine.
@@onthetrailnz The easiest thing in the world is to report someone on social media and take him down. You reporting me is not something you should be proud of. Especially because my ancestors died for our freedom and you are reporting our right to sovereign existence. Be careful what side of history you are taking here.
Great to see grape vines all over the place around Split Jared! That is the origin of the NZ wine industry right there. The original "Dalmatian" migrants - the gumdiggers - came from the area around Split and brought their love of wine with them. I wonder if there is any memory of that migration in Split? Our wines used to be submitted to wine judging in Ljubljana.
Ahh that's interesting to know! There were definitely a lot of vines everywhere around that area and in Slovenia as well!
I see you couldn't resist including a short drone flight! Look forward to when you can upload more drone footage. Bet you found returning to the middle of an NZ winter a bit of a shock to the system after 30 degrees!
Haha yes had to slip in a few drone vids! The temperature change was a bit of a shock to start with, but I'm getting used to it now! Only one week left in NZ now!
Picturesque, and it looks so clean. Keep em coming, and I look forward to seeing you up the valley real soon.
Definitely one of the cleanest Balkan countries I visited! Thanks for watching and looking forward to seeing you next week!!
Iv been there years ago, best squid Iv ever eaten.
Ahh, it's definitely a nice country to visit!!
Thank you, I realky enjoyed your video. Convinced me to do the wslk later this year. Cheers
Thanks for watching!! It’s definitely worth doing 😁
Very Inspector Gadget...go go Gadget umbrella 😅 Good vids fellas, seem to be taking it all in your stride.
Haha yes, definitely some interesting solutions!! Thanks for watching!

I will be at A Lofoten to Leknes for about five days moving around the area . We don't intend to do any ferry tour . So should I purchase A Four Days bus pass or just pay as I get on board the bus . How to check the fares for the buses ? thanks
Hi, sorry for the late reply - I’m in Iceland right now!! I bought the youth one month bus pass for the Nordland region (about €30 for the month for under 25s). I’m not sure about the value of the other passes but the youth pass was definitely worth it for me. You can see the prices and buy them (and single tickets) in the Reis Nordland app, which covers the whole Nordland region (all of Lofoten and quite a bit more). You need to have some kind of ticket on the app to get on the bus. Hope that helps!!
@@onthetrailnz Thanks for your response . What is the average pricing for a single trip to hop into a bus for Lofoten ? We are a senior couple , anyway to check the bus pass for a week or month ? Thanks.
@@辛福-m5l I think the standard 7 day adult pass for Nordland is 1290 NOK (about 110 Euros). I'm not sure if there is a senior one available. I didn't really look at the prices of the tickets since I had the pass, but I know for sure that for the trip I did, the pass was worth it. Individual tickets are quite expensive. With either a pass or a ticket, the only way to buy and use them is with the Reis Nordland app (or the Troms Billet app for the Troms og Finnmark region). You can enter two points on the app and it will give ticket options and should also show you the passes. You can't use paper tickets or cash - they aren't sold there.
@@onthetrailnz Thanks
Nice vid mate 👌 heading to Montenegro tomorrow and will be checking out Podgorica, Budva, and Kotor
Awesome - thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed your time in Montenegro!

I meant ‘ lovely’!

Rather dirty river in Sarajevo but lonely one in Mostar
Yes, a lot of the rivers in the capital cities were pretty dirty, but as soon as you get out, they're amazing!
Very interesting,thanks
Thanks for watching!
I love the bridges.
Some of them were pretty awesome!
Oops. I meant Mostar (with the bridge), not Sarajevo.
Both some some pretty cool bridges!!
Thanks for your efforts, not only enjoying your travels but keeping your loyal followers up to date...and carrying not 1 but 2 large rucksacks! I was surprised just how many tourists there were in Sarajevo and it isn't the height of the tourist season yet. That bridge is so well known, sadly for all the wrong reasons but it seems they've spent a lot of effort rebuilding the bridge and the town itself. Looking forward to the next installment!
Thanks so much for watching! I've been a bit slow on getting the next video up, but I'm working on it now!
What beautiful architecture. Great video JP, keep em coming.
Thanks for watching! Some of the building were pretty cool! Hopefully I'll get some more videos up soon :)

Well done, another great video. Amazing two brown bears and snakes on the trail.. Thanks for a great video on a little known place!
Thanks for watching!! Quite cool to say I’ve seen those animals now, but not necessarily at the time 😂
Looks like some nice beaches, could be well worth a visit. Thanks so much for showing us around :)
Yes definitely some good places to visit! Apart from the power cuts three times a day 😅
@onthetrailnz that was a black out for all this countries Greece,Albania,Montenegro,Bosnia and Croatia, in Albania the power never cuts three time per day, good video tho
Wow, that ice cave looked awesome but well dodgy! How was that snow slide escape down the hill haha? Great scenery thanks so much for another amazing video
Yeah you definitely wouldn’t want to fall into that ice cave 😂 The snow slide was interesting - definitely a quicker way down!! Thanks for watching!
What a stunning video my friend! Amazing presentation!
Thanks for watching!!
What an adventurous day out, nothing like adding abit of stress to your leisurely stroll up the hill😮 The first city you were in was a linesman dream...so many overhead powerlines, bags not fly a kite! Another great video JP, keep em coming😊
Haha yes definitely one of the less relaxing hikes I’ve done 😂 All those power lines and there’s still about 3 power cuts a day - the system clearly doesn’t work 😂
Snakes. Bears. Wasps. Stinging nettles. Ah! The challenges of overseas travel! Nothing too dangerous to worry about in NZ. Yeah, ongaonga and bush lawyer aren’t cute and cuddly but won’t kill you (probably). You’ll appreciate Aotearoa on your return and all it has to offer. Great you’ve chosen to visit some pretty unusual countries too. Not many venture to Macedonia, Albania etc.
Haha yes, I think the NZ plants and animals are much more tame 😂 I’ll definitely appreciate what NZ has more than I did! Thanks for watching!!
Chur bro from an Albo living in New Zealand I hope you liked my country as much as I like Aotearoa
I loved it there! Everyone was so friendly and some pretty amazing nature as well 😁
