This video is about the Kangchenjunga Trek and is meant to be a trek report and a guide for anyone interested in hiking this beautiful trail in Nepal's Wild East, up to Kangchenjunga South Base Camp. It's the third and last part of our series about this three weeks long adventure to the slopes of the worlds 3rd highest mountain.
Reaching Kangchenjunga is not an easy endeavor. It takes a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, a tuk tuk, nine hours in a taxi, four hours in a jeep and a week of hiking to get into the mountains vicinity. But in the middle of March 2024, Chandi and I are finally tackling those challenges, to finally see the third highest mountain in the world. And a challenging trek it would prove to be...
After a one week hike to Kangchenjunga North Base Camp, we got rewarded with... not very much actually. First, we couldn't see the slightest bit of it's north face due to clouds and fog, and then we got caught in a blizzard on the way back down with the fresh snow prohibiting any more attempts on the mountains north side.
So we shifted our focus towards the Simbuwa valley on the south side of Kangchenjunga, which offers a trail of to the mountains South Base Camp. But to get to the Simbuwa Valley, we first needed to cross several high mountain passes. With us were more clouds, more snow and high hopes on finally seeing mount Kangchenjunga...

another great video <3
V helpful thanks
Great series! Make me want to go back to Nepal again. It will be even more fantastic if we can have more shots of food and room of the lodges, they are very important for me lol. Is Kanchenjunga doable in early Mar or mid Nov, lodges, crowd and weather wise? Waiting eagerly for the guide video.
Thank you! :) Yeah, I'm way behind on that. Trying to get it done in early December.
Super great Kanchenjunga Trek Video
Great video again, I am one of your subscribers. I have a question. I have done som trekking, Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base Camp, 12 days in Bhutan, to the top of Kilimanjaro. So I am not afraid of altitude. But afraid of heights. Like suspension bridges which is more than 75 m above ground. Is the Manaslu trek ok for me? Regards Håkan
Hi Håkan! The largest bridge on the Manaslu Circuit is between Sirdibas and Philim. It's not as high as Hillary Bridge on the EBC Trek, but longer. In case there is strong wind, it might shake a bit. Other than that I don't remember any outstandingly long or high bridges. I'd GUESS (!) that if you were able to cross Hillary Bridge you should be able to hike the Manaslu Circuit. However I don't suffer from fear of hight, therefore can't relate precisely and I'm actually not qualified to answer that for certain. 😬
@@TheMenWhoStareAtMountains Thanks for the quick answer. When I did the EBC trek was for about 15 years ago and the it was the old Hillary Bridge which was lower. But I have one more question and that is relating to what season did you trek, spring or fall? regards. Håkan
That was in fall. I think mid October to first week in November. Be aware that Larke La is impassable for ice and snow more often than other passes as the decent looks north-west. So I'd advise against going between mid-Dec to March.
Amazing video. Very informative.
Appreciated Thanks 👍
How do you choose your guide, do you have one or a company you recommend for the manaslu circuit? Thanksss great video btw
I usually trek with an agency called Prems Nepal Trek. You can find and directly text them on Facebook. Or just google them and you'll find their website. I did many treks with them and was never disappointed.
Hello bro, what do you have to say about Kajin Sara Lake Trek ?
Which is the best month to do ABC trek for spectacular views October end or November end ?
November is better. It gets colder but also more clear
Woops, da haben wir wohl was durcheinander gebracht. Danke und viel Spaß das nächste Mal in Nepal!
Nepal is an excellent destination for nature lovers ❤❤
Agree!
Wowowo❤😊❤😊 beautiful❤😊❤😊🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for these wonderful videos and the very helpful commentary. I have a question, if I may - for a person with some fear of heights (only of very narrow trails with a steep drop-off on one side), which sections of Manaslu do you think may be worrisome? From your videos, I thought generally the path was ok, but are there any such sections that don't appear in the videos? Would you say the Annapurna Circuit has fewer of these sections? I'm trying to choose between the two given my condition. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for these wonderfully kind words! ☺ I'm not fully qualified to answer the question with certainty, as I have no fear of height myself and I'm not completely sure what kind of trail section would trigger it, but I'll try to answer it as good as I can. The narrowest (permanent) trails on the Manaslu circuit are between Ekle Bhatti and Deng. It between 10:00 and 11:00 minutes in the first video: th-cam.com/video/O5Uf-b-Eemw/w-d-xo.html Apart from that landslides can happen in lots of different places. Those would require you to cross them on narrow, slippery gravel trails clinging to a steep slope. You can see one of those at 07:25 minutes, also in the first video. Besides that, the descent down from Larke La to Bhimtang is quite steep and across some rubble fields, but it's not a cliff or anything like that. So... I would (very uneducatedly) guess you'd be fine? The trails on the Annapurna circuit are even less of a problem, as they are even more wide, than the ones on the Manaslu Circuit. Btw, I have a whole video in the channel discussing the pros and cons of each of the two treks. It's not specifically looking at trail widths, but it might help you decide between them anyway: th-cam.com/video/gs-bNJxHEPA/w-d-xo.html
This is an absolutely awesome video. Thanks for all the wonderful information my friend. 🏔️👍
Vielen, vielen Dank für das tolle Video. Wirklich beeindruckende Bilder.
A very tough trek. Well done! Later in spring may be easier and warmer! Starting in late October or very early November is the ideal time in my opinion.
Thanks Peter! Yes, next time I'll go to Nepal will definitely be in fall again.
Your videos on trekking in Nepal are incredible! We're choosing between Kopra Danda Trek and ABC for this November. Which one did you like more?
Thank you! ABC is more spectacular, but it will most likely be very crowded in November. The Annapurna Conservation Area Project prevents people to build new lodges above chomrong and even banned expanding existing lodges. Because the number of trekkers is increasing, though, there is often a shortage of beds in high season. Especially at MBC and ABC. You can hire an experienced local guide, who might be able to book rooms for you in advance (not possible by yourself). If you want to go without a guide, you risk having to sleep in the dining room. Kopra Danda is not quite as spectacular as ABC in my opinion. It still provides great views, though. It should be a lot less crowded and (unless you happen to meet large organized groups) finding rooms won't be an issue. You could also consider Langtang or Gosainkund as great one week treks btw.
highly informative video keep it up
Thank you very much! 😊
sooo coooool, thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you very much, Toni Daai, for this video as well. You told me the story about it in Kathmandu, and I'm sorry to see the bad weather you experienced. But you guys made it, and the next treks will be easier for you 😁
Great View
❤❤
Wow... Dai 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
Very interesting video as usual. Thanks
What an amazing trip. The scenery is just fantastic. Seems probably too strenuous for us but wonderful to experience it vicariously. Thank you! Can't wait for the next installment
What made it strenuous was mostly just the snow. In the dry most trails won't be too tough. The trail to Pangpema would be strenuous, though, in any condition. 😅
@@TheMenWhoStareAtMountains Also FYI that we will be trekking with Prems this fall per your recommendation. They seem like wonderful people 🙏
I think you made a good choice. :) Tell them I said hi!
Great as always. If north south and west are in nepal..then east Kanchenjunga is in India? Need to do some google earth research myself. Also if possible do the Goecha la in Sikkim and maybe compare these two BC treks.
The border runs very much straight from north to south over the top of the mountain. 🇳🇵🏔🇮🇳
I really enjoyed the video. You didn't fail as you made it to North Base camp in terrible conditions. It is tiring enough when there isn't any snow. I am looking forward to the final episode.
Really quite unlucky with the weather. You'll have to try again in November when it is much more settled. North BC views are so amazing. It's really the most awe inspiring mountain. Looks like the Lhonak to Pang Pema route has become a lot more difficult since I went there (2004 and 2008) where it was a pleasant stroll
Like 80% of the old trail is still the same, but the retreating glacier made the side moraine and the hillside above unstable, so it's now interrupted by 4 major landslides now.
Very good video again, even if the weather was a little bit bad. It would be nice though if you could tell us what time of the year you are trekking and the pros and cons of other seasons
Sure! This was in late March. March is the end of dry season, so some light rain here and there is to be expected. The amount of snow we got is quite unusual, though. The chance for longer and heavier rainfalls usually increases throughout April and May until the beginning of monsoon in June. During the whole spring it should get gradually warmer, but also more wet. We were just unlucky, as it was still fairly cold, but we got a full week of snow showers, at least on the south side of the range. Another thing to note about trekking in spring: During the long dry season in winter, the air gets more and more polluted, so even if it's clear weather-wise, it often looks hazy in March and April, especially in lower altitudes. The weather in fall (post monsoon) is usually a lot more stable and the air is clean. Starting in mid October the risk for larger showers decreases drastically. Late October and all of November are the best months for trekking, but also the most crowded ones. December to February is very clear, too, but also very cold.
@@TheMenWhoStareAtMountains Thanks for the quick answers. You say the best teking season is October-November because of clear weather but more crowded. Is that also applicable for the Annapurnna region? Another question regarding the spring season is, does not the Rhododendron bloom and make some of the mountain sides beautiful?
Good point about the Rhododendron! The time of blooming varies a lot though: by the exact kind kind of Rhododendron, by altitude and by the region. On our way up (3rd week of March) we only found very, very few blooming ones. Only the small red ones (apparently they are the first ts start) and only between 2000 and 2500 meters. On our way down (1st week of April) there were many more of the small red ones, also higher up, but still not a single white or pink blossom. Also no really big ones. I am not sure whether this late bloom is normal in the far East of the country or if it had to do with the unusually dry winter. Judging by the pictures I saw online, the Rhododendron blossom around Pokhara was very pretty at the very same time of year. Long story short: no real idea. Sorry! 😅
kun mahina ma ho brother?
Thanks so much for sharing all your adventures. I'm curious: Do you use crampons in the snowy-icy conditions? I was quite afraid when we walked up and down icy paths on the Annapurna Circuit in 2019, and said I'd never go without crampons again - but they're heavy to carry. What are your thoughts?
Also 100% pro crampons. The problem I had on this trek was, that the rubber band on my mini spikes was apparently too old and not flexible any more, so they fell off all the time. Not ideal. Since then I'm also 100% pro actually checking the equipment before setting off. 😅
❤❤love it🙏🏻🙏🏻
Amazing views and immaculate edits! P.S: It's nice to see the Haldiram's Mysore Pak that we gave you at the restaurant the day you landed at KTM 😃
The Haldiram's Mysore Pak saved us multiple times. 😅 All of the small lunch spots were closed. Again, thanks a lot!! 😊
Thank you very much for always trekking with us Toni daai 🥰
Really enjoyed daai😊 Well done as always🙏😍👏
Thanks for the video. A lot of memories came up. This trek was the start of my 123 days trek along the GHT. Even though there was no road from Taplejung in 2012 many things haven't changed since then. It's a trek I always recommend.
123 days on the GHT sounds like a proper adventure! 😯

another one for the bucket list
Excellent video but such a shame about the weather. In November 2023 there was no snow and only half a day of cloud! It was a tiring trek but it must have been exhausting in those conditions. I am looking forward to the next episode.
Thanks Peter! Also for letting me use your picture of the Temple. I had so much good luck with the weather in Nepal on former treks, that I was kinda overdue for this. 😅
I wouldn't fancy the steep traverse of the hill on the way to Kambachen when covered in snow! As for Kambachen to Lhonak in the snow, I've done this before and didn't find it too hard.
I certainly had more boring trekking days in my life, than the one up to Kambachen. That traverse was not too much fun. 😅
@@TheMenWhoStareAtMountains In good conditions it is an amazing traverse though as you get such fantastic views of Jannu. I never had snow passing it but I once had to pass a yak caravan going the other way and that was pretty scary
Finally🙏😳😳😳😳🤩🤩

thank you for this comprehensive video!
i did the manaslu march 3 to 14 this year and the anapurna apr 23 to 30 alsi this year....i was disappointed by the huge crowd at anapurna although the trek itself was very nice, manaslu was magic and i loved the remoteness and the fact that there were so few people...manaslu was definitely my favorite ❤
Hi Tony, can I ask what was the weather like during your Manaslu Circuit trek? We’re planning on going at a similar time(March)next year, so it would help a lot if you could share your experience, please. Thanks in advance! :)
