Another great video with top suggestions! I studied Ancient History at university and will never get bored of the ever changing enigma that was Rome. If you or anyone else is interested in a book focused more on Romes soldiers, weaponry, and tactics during the Republic years, I'd recommend checking out Simon James' book Rome & the Sword (chapters 1 and 2).

Thank you! The biggest problem with academic history is that historians don't have a sense of humour and therefore believe that their subjects don't either. Emma Southon brings a witty humanity to these otherwise dusty busts.

When I was a teenager, I was and still am an avid reader. I would read books on the couch next my grandpa while he watched the news. One day, he had me follow him to this old bookcase in the front room. It was filled with old national geographics, old logbooks and fire training manuals from his time as a Battalion Chief for CDF, now Cal-Fire. And tucked right next to the family Bible, he pulled out Lonsome Dove from there and handed it to me and said, "This is the only book you'll need to read. I haven't been able to read a book as good as this one since I first read it." Later on, we ended up watching the Lonsome Dove series together on TV, and I got a little more insight into the man he was and the man he aspired to be.

Midnight in Chernobyl was a phenomenal read, Higginbothom's labor was SO evident and he wrote it so wonderfully - it never felt too heavy even during the science parts (but I do love science, so maybe that's why). Chernobyl happened when I was young, and I found myself being transported back in a way I didn't expect. Agrippina was a GREAT book I read solely on your recommendation and I'm SO glad I did. Emma Southon is such a fun writer and I'm so glad she focuses on women in ancient history. The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt is on my TBR for 2026 (yes, I have my TBR planned through the end of next year lol). I definitely want to read the Greatest Knight in the future - it looks great!

Interesting reads, perhaps I can find in the audio format. Do you have any opinions/views you don't mind telling/sharing on Pontius Pilate. I'm aware he is motioned in the Gospels of the New Testament as the Governor of Judea representing Roman authority, I thought he would be more ruthless/less sympathetic towards anyone who was a threat to the Roman Empire.
