Hobonichi A5 Day-Free Setup for 2024: Planning, Journaling, Notes
A setup I am trying out in the Hobonichi A5 Day-Free, which I had initially gotten for work-related notes. I am having fun with incorporating a weekly planning layout, academic research study notes, and journaling into this notebook to experiment with whether I would like to try this out as a viable all-in-one option for One Book July (to be determined...).
Setup materials include:
• Hobonichi A5 Cousin 'Dog/Sake Dog' Cover by Tomomi © Nishikawa (www.1101.com/store/techo/en/2024/pc/detail_cover/cc24_nishikawa/)
• Hobonichi A5 Day-Free Techo (www.1101.com/store/techo/en/2024/all_about/dayfree/)
• Zebra Mildliner Pen Set in Natural colorway
• Wanle Studio Washi Tape 'Windows' (misopaper.co.uk/product/wanle-studio-washi-tape-windows/)
• Hobonichi Stencil Basic Set (Green) (www.1101.com/store/techo/en/2024/pc/detail_toolstoys/tt_template/)
Thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoy!

A mini-review of the Travel (Chocolate) A6 leather cover by Hobonichi (www.1101.com/store/techo/en/2018/pc/detail_cover/oc18_travel.html). Yes, the first double spread pages not only look inviting to work with but also neat and very functional. I’m not sure about including work and research notes in the same journal though. Have you designed a good indexing system so that you can find past notes as time goes on? Anyway, thank you, I’m going to try your opening spread with the fold - it is clever. X

This is a brilliant set - up - I have started experimenting in a blank Hobonichi A5 notebook - and trying this - and it is working amazingly - thank you for sharing! I am now thinking for 2025 I might get a Wonderland222 that All In One - that has 236 blank pages in the back and I could set up my "daily" entries like this! But for the remainder of the year I will set up my blank notebook for now. Again the unlimited notes pages ( not just one per day)is so freeing.. if I miss a day no gap no guilt, and no backfilling!

Thanks for such a lovely video! I’ve tried using the A5 both for personal and for work (and even tried to combine them at one point). I find that I’m not a daily journaller, so the Cousin was out of the question for my personal entries. Right now I’m using my A5 Avec for work, and it’s going great! There’s a lot of notes and I love that I can look back on specific dates and track important information. But now I am contemplating a Dayfree, just for “commonplace” (which is more like tracking key info for me haha), so I really loved this video!!

Hello Jennifer ~ I just recently discovered your channel, and I find the way that you speak about journaling and planning so valuable. I'm a huge believer that our notebooks are reflections of our minds, but that the inverse is also true--in other words, that how we structure the page is a way to mold and guide structures of thinking. It's always really special to encounter others thinking so deeply about these things. Thank you for sharing your books and thoughts 💌

This is fantastic! Your layout reminds me a bit of the A5 Take a Note. I love the idea of folded pages that separate your work from personal journaling. @joyofstationery หลายเดือนก่อน

thank you so much, and yes I was thinking about that too with the A5 take a note! 🥰 in fact the next weekly spread I’m trying is similar with having separate columns for each of the days. I haven’t yet tried the A5 TAN, though I’ve tried the A6 ~ I didn’t end up sticking with the A6, but I wonder now if the A5 could be helpful. Using the hobonichi notebook in the way you mentioned (hybrid TAN/Cousin) sounds brilliant and I’d love to hear how it’s going, especially as a fellow teacher! I find that so much of my planning is inspired by trying to figure out what would work best for teaching in a lot of instances. Thank you so watching, and I’m so glad you enjoyed! ❤️

This looks great! I hope this works for u! I used the Weeks for years and enjoyed the format but this year, I moved into an a6 Hon because I wanted to try having a more square page to design my spreads. I love the size but I miss my weekly overviews (and no, Hobonichi, the weekly supplement doesn't solve my problem! I know u are just trying to force me to get a Cousin - I see u) Like you, I need a spread to lay out events and all my to-dos for the week. I was unsure whether the Day Free would have enough pages for the year because I like everything in one book.

Great set up! I’ve just devised what I’m calling the “Quick draw” Hobonichi weeks set up for my TN. I’m certain I’m not the first to think of this, but I use a Midori craft folder and put it in the TN the usual way, and slide each side of the the cover of the Hobonichi into the pockets of the folder. When I need a quick reference of the Weeks, i can flip through normally. If I want to have a longer session with it, it’s very easy to just slip it out of the folder and use it that way. This also helps with the issue of the Weeks not being the same size as the TN. The craft notebook acts as a rigid cover that is the same size as the TN!!

That cat cameo at the end was everything! Welcome back! 🥰 it’s so nice to catch up on what you’re up to in the journal and planner world. I’ve been thinking about what 2025 could be like when my life simplifies a bit and I may not use a Cousin. I also love housing my hobonichi weeks in my TN, and have been contemplating whether I might downsize to the TN next year. The one thing I’m hesitant to let go of is that vertical weekly. I know TN has a two-insert offering, but I like having one year together. Your layout experiment for May made me wonder if that’s a direction you’re going. If not, it inspired me to consider whether I could make that work! Love your DIY covers as well! So cozy! 🥹💗

aw thank you so much Alison!! 🥰🥹 I hear you about thinking about my 2025 lineup already, and about downsizing a bit. The weekly layout experiment for May has ended up being really helpful for me (I've just recorded on it) ~ I think it's being able to see the schedule for the days of the week (especially the work week/weekdays) in that vertical format/columns, even if it means adjusting the hobonichi weeks layout a bit, but I'm so happy with how flexible the weeks is for that!

Aww the cat attack! ❤ I love seeing the DIY things you’ve made, and your comments about the lull between initial excitement and cozy familiarity are insightful.

These are so great! I see you're an A6 kind of person. Lol. I've actually been gravitating towards A6, although in a perfect world, I'd be B6 all the time. I also have a Hobonichi A6 for gratitude journalling. My question to you is where do you get your gratitude journal prompts? I need a bit of inspiration some times. Love your channel!

Ooh im so tempted! I didn't like the engineer bag in small. The strap was too short as a comfortable crossbody for me so everything just felt so huge and heavy. Maybe this is a better option?

thank you so much for your video! I also have a doughnut backpack, do you have it in the regular size? wondering if this tote would fit on mine as well.

Excited to see your cute TSL tote 😍 These bags are so addictive.. The bag looks very well loved and taken care of. I can feel your excitement for packing this tote for a cafe work session. You also have a great eye for sourcing all THE cutest accessories to go with your notebooks and bags 😊
