Friday, August 23rd, 2024 - Rainy No Bueno
Weather update as of 9am, it was raining pretty hard minutes ago. I am going to gear up and get ready to head to the top of the mountain, we'll see how it goes... I would recommend riding at a lower elevation, maybe down in Cedar City.

My Last Day on the Mountain - I rode my SNOWBOARD for the time in five years! #brianheadresort
มุมมอง 7965 หลายเดือนก่อน
This was my last day on the mountain for the 2023-24 Ski Season, I thought it would be fun to try my snowboard for the first time since the spring of 1999! It was super epic right until the part of the mounting system broke... I also flew my new Potensic Atom 3-Axis Gimbal drone, I was stoked to find out that it can fly up to 11.700ft above sea level - amazing!
What is Spring Skiing like at Brian Head?? - #brianheadresort #brianheadskipatrol #springskiing

What is spring skiing like at Brian Head? This video will answer that question, today was absolutely incredible, we had anywhere from 4"-8" of fresh powder and it was still coming down when we left. My daughter and I played hooky from school and work and went up to BH one last time before I turn her gear in tomorrow. We explored Narnia in the deep-ish powder and had so much fun, we couldn't hav...

Okay, what happens when there is a mountain full of fresh powder, a storm coming in, and very few people being injured in your area?? This day was full of hitting the powder and and trees, I met Connor a paratrooper from the 82nd Airborne Division and fellow SUU Aviation pilot, and we meet up with my wife after a yoga session she teaches on Friday nights. This was a great day on Ski Patrol.

What Level of Skiing is Required for Ski Patrol? #brianheadresort #brianheadskipatrol #skipatrol

This is a short video that demonstrates what level of skiing you need to have for ski patrol, at least it shows what I am capable of on a few of our runs. (#slow) I am pretty much a work-horse type of skier, not very fast, I don't do anything fancy, I try to not jump - but I do make sure that I am able to access any terrain on the mountain. Why Do We Close Certain Lifts? #brianheadresort #brianheadskipatrol #skipatrol
มุมมอง 5276 หลายเดือนก่อน
Occasionally we have to close a lift, sometimes even multiple lifts. Most often it is due to weather conditions, usually extremely windy conditions. This was one of those days. The was also Alex's last day on our Ski Patrol as she is moving to Maui to work as a Park Ranger out there. This was also Pirate Day, strange but true.

I don’t know why but I dig the helmet, a bunch!
@@maxasaurus3008 The red one? It's a Team Wendy helmet, definitely the best I've ever owned. I did quite a bit of research before I bought it. Thanks for your input.
What kind of backpack is that?
Was there last Saturday. Beats the heat down in the valley.
@@douglasachtzehn6676 That is the truth, Friday was sooooo nice up there! I got a new (used) bike for next week, it's a Specialized with 180mm front and rear, can't wait to see how it handles BH. I hope you had fun on Saturday. 🤘
I'm not a skier, but I hear Utah snow is fantastic.
@@jameswest8280 Yep, I have experienced east coast snow in the past and the moisture content can be much higher than the snow we get out here. What that does is makes it heavier and harder to move around compared to what we typically receive. The lighter snow is generally considered to be more fun.
@@skipatrollife-southernutah7805 I know a couple in their 90s that still ski, they look and act like they are in their 50s, it's not fair. LOL
@@jameswest8280 That's our plan as well, my wife is a yoga instructor and personal trainer. It's really just a mindset I'm thinking.
@@skipatrollife-southernutah7805that, and the genetic lottery, which I lost.
@@jameswest8280 Yeah, that's the truth. I appreciate your thoughts. 😃 I hope your summer is going well.
Thanks for the videos and all of the Robert sightings. Looking forward to next season. Be safe my friend.
You are welcome, he is a good friend, hopefully Robert will have a good fire season. I will start posting up Bike Season videos once that gets going, I'm looking forward to that.
Lol. I posted on an older video...
Thanks for the season and all the Robert sighting. Be looking for you next season. Be safe my friend.
The quality on the drone shots are so good!
Thank you, I have been very pleasantly surprised by how good the footage is especially for being such a small drone. I have been using the stock settings and have been very happy with it as well. Thanks for watching and letting me know your thoughts!
DRONE FOOTAGE YEAAAAAH
Did you like that air footage then? If so that's awesome, I enjoyed doing
Like seeing air footage. You should do more of it.
Excellent! Thank you for the input, I will definitely put more airborne footage in the videos. This drone has a Follow-Me that will be fun as well. I appreciate you watching and letting me know your thoughts.
Thanks for you videos of patrolling and especially time with your daughter. Skiing with my daughter are always great times. Look forward to next season!
Thank you Jason, I appreciate your kind words and taking the time to watch these. I believe that someday these videos and the memories of my children will be very precious to me. I'm already looking forward to next season as well.
It will still be good this weekend !!
It should be, we have tons of snow. I'll be there this Friday, I'm hoping for good conditions.
I said nope, no way not happening. But I did go today and it was perfect!
You are smart! I was wondering how today was, I'm glad it was nice for you.
Skiied many days like that my friend! I feel for ya, Love the vids no matter what!! ;)
Thank you man, I was struggling a little bit with my motivation that day.
You're a Lucky man Shannon ;) Yoga & stretching in general is absolutely essential for a good life! I am also a back surgery survivor, L4, 5 & 6 - 2 Herniated & separated discs as well. Still shreddin' and playing golf at 65 Woohoo!!
I agree, quite lucky indeed. Thank you for watching all the way through. My wife has helped me so much! That back surgery sounds rough, I am trying to avoid that if at all possible. I'm glad you are still out there shreddin' and swinging clubs man!
Best Robert sighting yet 😊
Hah! I thought you'd enjoy that one. 😂
I worked there 86' to 93' when there were trees. Say hi to Dan C.
That's awesome, I bet working at the resort was a lot of fun back then. It is interesting how there seems to be fewer and fewer trees, some of it comes from the glading they are doing in the summer. What was the resort like back then?
Hey I know that dude 1:28
He is a handsome beast.
Hoping to make one more trip to Brian Head this season. I will be looking for you!
Sweet! We will have a bunch of snow for quite a long time, we got even more this weekend. See you up there!
Steeper slope than before?? wtf was that before a flat surface? Why the need to explain to the lifty what’s going to happen? One would expect the lift to be stopped ski patrol and her stuff take their seat and lift starts again and goes to max speed.
This was only second week that we were open, it is always a good idea to make sure the Lift Operator knows what their part of loading a toboggan is, we used to generally load the lift while it's moving - since then we have had a change of SOP (standard operating procedure) that the lift will always be stopped while loading toboggans. I personally have always liked the lift to be moving but at a slower speed.
Empty chairs, empty runs!! SO LUCKY ;) Thanks for all the great, fun vids man & as always "Thanks for your service to our country!"
Very lucky indeed, that was a very nice day. Typically the closer we get to the end of the season the fewer and fewer guests there are, and we have really fun snow right now. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
I salute you for your service. You didn't say how many years...5 deployments suggests a few. I was Army...2 years 7 months 14 days (not that I was counting) with only the one year deployment to Vietnam for a year.
I was in a total of six years active duty in the Marines and three deployments, then another eleven years in the CARNG with two deployments. I'd would say one year in Vietnam is more than enough, I thought of you Vietnam guys while I was doing Jungle Warfare training in Okinawa - I'll take the desert any day - the jungle is the most gnarly terrain in the world. I understand why you were counting the days. I appreciate you Vietnam vets, that was some serious combat.
Shannon...thank you for the great Robert sighting.👍👍
It's always a pleasure to capture the rare, and wild Robert in his natural surroundings! You are quite welcome.
Thanks for your service to our country! Enjoy watching you ski patrol. I ski patrol at a small hill in northern Minnesota. I volunteer the same reasons you do.
That's awesome, I appreciate your kind words. What is your resort called?
@@skipatrollife-southernutah7805 Mount Itasca Coleraine MN. look it up has a ski jumping history. We train about 100 kids every year to ski/snowboard. We also train cross country/biathlon for junior olympic's.

As always, thank you for the obligatory Robert sighting. 😊😊😊
Awesome pow day! Our last day is today I think. The resort has a pipe dream about opening next Friday/Saturday/Sunday but I don’t see it happening. Sad season for us. Almost no natural snow. Every storm missed us. We hit 100 days which was an impressive feat. May 5th closing is impressive! We’ve made it to the beginning of April in high snow years. ❄️❄️❄️ Hana is great and I wish her luck in whatever she pursues!
I'm sorry to hear about your rough season, it was a very slow start for us, luckily we've had some good storms recently. It was such a great experience to spend the day with Hana, especially an epic powder day.
nothing like being with your daughter and ski patrolling. She is 19 now and going in health care.
That's rad, I look forward the day Hana's on patrol with me. It's cool your daughter is taking her medical training to the next level.
I see Brian Head is part of the power pass. Are ski bikes allowed on the mountain?
Yes, ski bikes are allowed. I would like to try one out for the day at some point in the future.
Tele-Patroller! Sir some of us have wives
Haaaah!! I have one of those. (A wife that is) I'm not brave enough to tele-ski.
🤤 'Promo SM'
I'm not sure I understand what you are saying?
This was pretty unhelpful tbh
That's awesome to hear! I what way was it helpful? Perhaps I can do more it
@@skipatrollife-southernutah7805 What types of snow should one prepare for? What types of turns? How do those change when you're getting someone off the slopes on a litter? Is a regular low-expert black diamond skier good enough for ski patrol? What tests go into certifying you (ski expertise only)? It's an interesting subject, and I'm sorry you didn't have a good reaction to my critique, but yeah I'd like to know more.
@@gordonwright996 Those are great questions! I'll try to answer some on my video this Friday, that's great, thank you for the ideas. I'll write them on a notepad to remind myself, I appreciate it. Quick answer: yes a skier/snowboarder good enough to do anything on our mountain safely would be good enough with regards to sliding skills. Things change quite a bit while pulling a toboggan, we really just need people that are smart enough to get an injured person down the hill safely and without adding additional injury. At the beginning of each season we do a sliding assessment with the prospective Patrollers. - What question/statement didn't I like?
Next time you blow in inside edge just switch your skis to the other leg 💁♂️it will get you home faster.

Haaah! Excellent, he wasn't feeling super great that day poor guy.
This is my 53rd season skiing at BrianHead…. Compliments to your professionalism and your easy-going delivery. Your presentation truly embodies the spirit of BrianHead thank you - Mark

I have no preconceived notions of that, there will never be anything named after me. I appreciate the guys that pioneered the Brian Head area.
Interesting that you have an ambulance pre parked at ski patrol!
It is really just more of a transport for us at this point in time, think of it as a very ambulance-like van. I am not sure what the plans are for it.
I support women🫡
Of course you do, you are a fantastic human being.😃
Outskirts was about the only area I didn't hit. Yard Sale was the furthest over I made it. Did I miss anything?
Allen are you skiing or snowboarding? If you are skiing, I'd say Outskirts is worth a slide/scoot. I wouldn't bother with a snowboard unless you just want to take a walk and enjoy the beauty of that area. You really do get to see some beautiful terrain, I'd do it at least once, it's worth a little effort.
How far does that cat track take you up towards the peak? I’m wondering and wanting to ski one of those chutes
That sign in the video is as close as the cat track takes you. The hike up to the peak begins at that point, there are a couple different routes choices you can choose from from there. There are probably a few good videos that lay out those routes. Let me know if you have any other questions. I appreciate you watching.
@@ridingdeep8530 how long is the hike
@@gageedmondsonski24 Not very long, it's just steep and you'll be post-holing quite a bit. It's probably not even a mile to get to the chutes but it is definitely some work.
