    HI @Navardi Tuned, my F48 B48 has broken a ring land. stock compression is 11:1. Is it possible to replace them with 10.2:1 pistons and keep the tune stock, would I feel a noticeable difference. Thank for the awesome content.

    What is the factory gap? Because I got both of the same BMW part# and some come with champions and some come with NGK. The champions are at 0.24 and the NGKs are at .030

      was a bug with the flashing program bootmod3, seems the issue is no longer present on the latest version of the app

      @@MrTerror196 they're all basically the same just comes down to design there is no off the shelf sleeve for this engine other than these and Darton didn't design them I did, Darton is the manufacturer and as such we can use their material, and some design elements to identify the sleeve as theirs Other sleeves used for the N20 including any from LA sleeve has been repurposing other engines sleeve designs and sometimes modifying those as well

    I have a B48B20O0, I'd like to add an IM450 but I'm worried that the pistons won't take the additional boost. I currently have a stage 2 tune (93 and downpipe) on BM3, but my next major mod will be Flex Fuel kit and B58TU pump, running OTS multimap. I want to run E85 at times, with E40/50 majority of time (for corrosion limitation). However, I've heard that I can't run E85 because the B58TU pump won't handle the amount of fuel I'll require, and would need like an IPOS stage 1 or 2 pump with port injection. I'd like to know your thoughts. Many thanks.

      Hey Jake, So I already have a few resources that can help guide you here The first being a video on the internals of the Bxx engines which are incredibly stout th-cam.com/video/bbtqG17NDZc/w-d-xo.html&lc=UgzlHbjCRF01iuZzyW54AaABAg The other being the Wiki bmwenginewiki.com the entire fuel system is E85 compliant so you don't need to worry about the corrosion issue using the fuel the TU HPFP can support up to 410-430 WHP on E85 with the right injectors and turbo ~ but that can vary depending on engine compression and each Bxx engine generation Gen 2 B48s use a different Exh Cam lobe design that causes the TU HPFP to flow less fuel than a Gen 1 B4x Engine so they normally cap out around 380-400WHP WHP Figures are quoted based on RWD/FWD Dynojet Then you have to look at the injector limits Gen 1 B4x max out around 360WHP on E85 Gen 2 around the same but you can easily swap them for B48E / S58 Injectors Eventually you end up needing PI or DI upgrades as you look to run E85 close and into the 400 range So my advice is flick through the wiki and see if you want to run full E or a blend Either way pump gas will not run into the 400s on an IM400, or 450 or 500 due to the boost required to get there

      @@NavardiTuned really great response, many thanks. However, can you please elaborate a bit more when you say “pump gas”? Are you saying 93 as opposed to ethanol? Confused as both are purchased at the pump. How does this relate to lack of boost? I understand that as ethanol increases, more of it is required to make power. Are you saying ethanol creates more boost pressure? If so, is that due to the simple fact of the additional fuel being combusted? And therefore 93 won’t make over 400hp on any turbo setup? Wiki says stage 5 equals 400-600hp, gasoline fuels only. Thanks again!

      ​@@jakemaddox76 pump gas refers to gasoline usually 93 but can refer to anything from 89 - 93 Ethanol does not create more boost pressure Running ethanol vs pump gas is that ethanol has great knock resistance and allows you to up the boost (if the turbo can support it) as increasing boost usually (not always) increases turbo flow but also increases engine compression called effective compression. Ethanol has more octane in it so the fuel alone allows for more power but then boost is just one aspect of what ethanol might allow you to change, usually it also allows you to change ignition targets but ign and boost play a connected game and usually upping boost requires a reduction in timing End result you just need to tune to MBT - HPA have good courses on this. With regards to the wiki whilst stage 5 refers to pump gas only is in the sense that the fuel system and the power targets but to obtain that type of power on a pump gas setup you need a turbo that flows ALOT of air for a LOW boost pressure as we do not want to increase the engine effective compression and risk detonation however on a 4 cylinder its pretty rare to unlikely you will find a turbo that will do this that won't take 10 years to spool up. everything is about balance and for the turbos we have on the market to get over 400WHP/HP you need high boost and you will not run high 20s low 30s on pump gas it will detonate.

      I can tune it remotely yes via BM3 or MGFlasher Yes it can be close ultimately the gearing of the Supra + the car weight matters here but yes you can get awfully very similar if you have alot of the same mods as listed

    hi on my 20i x3 2019 piston cracked. i think injector fault. i will buy new injectros... but what pistons would u recomend to build engine. i want to go around 300HP nothing more but i want to bulit it and run with no more piston problems..

      well these engines are extremely reliable so that is a 1/1000 unfortunate event Going OEM would be fine going forged is super overkill especially for the power you want a 2019 X3 is a Gen 2 B4x engine which uses some of the most reliable OEM pistons todate Maintain OE CR of 10.2:1

    Great video even though I'm a few years late lol! I have an F82 M4, what is an acceptable range of boost deviation before you suspect a boost leak? Also, cylinder 4 on my car usually lags behind the other 5 cylinders more often than not. In searching the interwebs, I see many other S55's having the same issue adding cylinder 6 as well. Any ideas? Thank you, and sorry for the necro post! I'm on a BM3 Flex Fuel multimap stage 1 in slot 3.

      haha this is an old video now! still somewhat relevant though - usually 3+ psi and high WGDC (like 90+) would be a good sign of a boost leak How much IGN deviation do you see on Cyl 4? on pump gas up to 3 degrees of variance is usually fine - usually if you see throttle closure you can see ign variance due to the turbulent air and uneven distribution between cylinders

    out of the box spark plugs are known to be out of spec a lot of the time. it’s always important to check the gap and regap if necessary

      Unfortunately Diesels are not my forte, I have seen the turbo setup on some BMWs are they're nutty and stupidly hard to work on lol being so compact and crammed together

      @@NavardiTuned What? You think 3 or 4 turbos is excessive, that's strange. I was a BMW tech for many years here in Aus, big fan of the M54 and M57, but the newer 6's are becoming very complicated. The M57 is a common swap, excellent engine even for boats. Either the N57 or B57 is used in the OXE diesel outboard. I would like to use one for an experimental aircraft but the timing, oil pump and valve train have become very complex. They would require a lot of modification. B57 components are weaker compared to M57 but it outputs more power. Where in Aus are you?

      @@chippyjohn1 Not strange compound setups are nothing new to diesels just, seeing the OE setup is wild due to how compact they are that was the point I was making. Syd based usually attend some of the meets etc around Syd

      @NavardiTuned I'm very familiar with compound, have designed and implemented it on an engine. I think the 4 turbos used on a BMW engine are more about not being able to fit just two turbos. As you mentioned, there is not much room. Last time I drove my E30 to Sydney from Melbourne, Sydney was full of potholes. Best of luck with the projects.

      It's a very common issue, it's listed on their internal puma system, have them check the system, there's a shim fix kit they need to install, it's BS about being normal.

      @@MYMOUNTAIN_122 only people I have heard complain about this is UK owners, rest of the world so far has no complaints and mine hasn't had an issue. Not saying its not an issue but seems to be a small region of affected users, whether BMW will do anything about it or not that is on them. If there is info in Puma and a fix kit then that's saying something

      I know it sounds like the success of fuel pump noise. Or valve train clatter. I haven't been able to figure out which one it is it goes away though once you're driving and it's just fine on the highway it's quiet once you get down to idle and you're sitting at a stoplight or something like that and it sounds like a bunch of valve train clatter

      This is a loaded Dyno just FYI not inertial like a Dynojet (better for testing) but it's our entirely built 1000HP engine package. As for the driveline on this torque its pretty low compared to the 600nm they can typically take on a 28i (in this case a 328i) before they'll break but also depends on what your launch control strategy is

    Great discussion on all the different B48 internals throughout BMW's iterations. It's exactly what I was looking for, a whole hour very well spent watching you go at it. Much appreciated! On topic of B48's, one very worthwhile curiosity I get very fogged up about is the differences in B48E vs B48's, the B48TU's turbocharger setup. You mentioned that the heads on the gen 1's are more of a bottleneck, I get that as I've a gen 1 head laid out in my garage, but I don't have a gen 2 head to compare against. But I do realize the runners and the valve angles to be questionable at different locales. A port job will definitely raise the bar and get some improvements. But what about the turbocharger differences? I know much of the turbochargers they used between the B48's and the B48E's, and by comparing the part numbers, most peripheral parts do share the same part numbers, but both the turbocharger itself and the downpipe are different; I'm speaking so on behalf of the Mini Cooper S's against the JCW Countryman's. I'm guessing 302HP from the E versus 228HP on the gen 1's 2's can't just be a tune and internal parts being different. I remember you mentioned there's that boost difference between 25 psi and 17 psi, so I'd reckon turbo diameters to also seek a slight difference, too? Hope you can also put out a thorough episode to elaborate on those. Bunch guys in the States can greatly benefit from your valuable finding and input. Again, much appreciate all your effort and content. Keep up with the great stuff. Love it!

I actually already have you covered here on this, all the info you are asking for is in the wiki -> bmwenginewiki.com Yes the B48E turbo is in-fact a totally different turbo to the B48TU and B48, B48 -> TD04 Based B48TU -> Garret Based B48E -> Garret Based (different again to the TU turbo) The Mini/UK11 Cylinder heads do differ in port angle compared to the BMW Longitudinal setups which can have some impacts on power / TQ due to things like swirl effect for example The Mini/UK11 Intake Manifolds are also a valid contributor to power / TQ ability of those engines over the BMW Longitudinal equivalents.

      @@NavardiTuned Yeah, I found the vid and watched it all the way. It does seem like the B48E turbo is the golden ticket in terms of OEM options, which is what I really like. Once again, love the work you're doing and will absolutely be on the watch out for your contents about these B48 mods. I did a N55 build with CP pistons and Manley rods, didn't get to a turbo that I like, yet; but it's running on MHD stage 2 on 91 OCT and made about 360whp which is pretty good already. I will have to watch more of your vids to gather my ideal part combination for the car. I have the 2022 X2 Sdrive 28i which is a whole step below the X2 M235i, and I think at the end of the day, I would like to bring my car to right below 400whp and call it. Based on your detailed assessment on the TU pistons and rest of the internals, I think 400whp is quite safe. I'm thinking to do this with the B48E turbo and 58TU HPFP, DP, FTP brachials, and really don't know if there's an OTS tune for this. My local tuner I hear is recently closing and shutting their shop down. So that's going to be a big bummer and time spent to find another tuner. By the way, do you know if I can send my ECU to Femto to bench unlock? I'm thinking of acquiring another ECU and clone it for the unlock to put the tune on, strictly for safety and future troubleshooting use.

    Worth adding, the NGK SILZKBR8F8S was not discussed and is a Spark Plug upgrade used by some S55/N55 and N20/N26 Owners This Plug is considered as a N20 / N26 Active Flex (Ethanol) Spark Plug, is a plug with a Projection Ground Strap over the NGK 97506 (Stock) N20 N26 Extended Projection Plug The ground strap change aids in pre-ignition protection, and there is a minor change to the metal shell for detonation & pre-ignition protection of the electrodes ceramic. This SILZKBR8F8S is hard to source and only available in the BMW Part Number 12120042724, and the NGK 91784 discussed in this video would be a better alternative especially given its higher conductivity and improved ground strap design

      Specifically with the N20, we cnc out the entire factory sleeve (open deck design) and we add our own custom design Darton wet sleeve to be a 1 piece solution to closing the deck and ensuring maximum possible bore wall thickness for any abuse customers want to throw at it
