Comprehensible input is just training data for humans

The reason why so many people think that they’re bad at learning languages or that language learning isn’t for them is because they try outputting before inputting. I've been watching your videos for a few years but never commented until now. It was probably your anki/mandarin videos that led me to your channel 3 or so years ago. I feel like we're quite similar when it comes to learning and the idea of becoming a "polymath". In general I just love learning which is why I've been language learning for over 6 years now. I love reading so my goal with learning different languages (Mandarin, French, Japanese & a few others) is to get access to even more books. Like you, I also love the idea of using a different language to learn other things. It feels like when learning a language there is no "end" and that's what I love most. There's always something new to learn. Thank you for sharing openstax! I've wanted to go through an Organic Chemsitry textbook for years since taking it in Highschool and I see they have an open source textbook. There's also some other textbooks there that I'll check out in the future!

I do not enjoy watching so I mostly read books that i save to my google drive and it takes a second to lookup and save a note and it's definition into an anki note. If I feel completele lost i just select the whole sentence and tap translate in a dropdown menu. It can be imroved somehow to get an example sentence from the source, but the Oxford dictionary also has them

    I've never been a fan of streaks really. Most of them operate with the assumption that you never take a break. Sure, consistency is important, but consistency doesn't have to be doing something every single day with no room for breaks. I also find that a lot of people who obsess over their streak just think of hitting the minimum threshold necessary to keep the streak alive rather than doing activities that would actually help them make progress. Maybe this is exactly a symptom of what you mention in the video, where people feel like they "should" do something (to keep the streak alive), rather than they "want" to or "get" to (and as a bonus their streak continues for another day). Either way, I'm glad you seem to be figuring things out and hope that you can find enjoyment in LL again!

    Hello Giovanni, I like your videos and I have something to say about your channel if you have the time to read. What you said about quantity over quality and not stressing over every meaning of every obscure word is interesting because I agree with it yet I have never heard it from any language learner before. Perhaps it is a good approach for intermediate to advanced learners. I have found that while reading English, even though I don't read to learn English itself, I often skim over complex words I don't know the meaning of yet still arrive at an understanding of the sentence or paragraph itself. i.e. if the general meaning is understood then the meaning of every word does not need to be known. Especially because if a word is too obscure to be understood in writing, then it most likely will never be used in speaking, which is the end goal. Plus, using obscure words in speaking is not recommended as the objective is to communicate, not confuse. However, I don't think that skipping over any words that are not understood is good advice for beginners as beginners will not be consuming content that should even contain "obscure" words, but should contain the most common words used in a language. As for the direction of your channel, I agree that you should try to make videos where you speak in Spanish or Mandarin, or perhaps review some interesting content you recently read or learnt about in your target language. It does not need to be weekly. While I agree that quantity over quality is better for consuming content for advanced speakers like you, I don't think this same philosophy should be applied to your videos. I think you should take your time to create your script (as you said you wanted to from now on), and maybe spend more time on your thumbnails as that would help your videos reach a wider audience. I think you have great potential as a content creator because your videos seem unique. Your videos have no edits at all and with a continuous commentary, the way you present is calm and casual yet somehow genuine and personal at the same time, which is a far cry from typical hyper-edited videos designed to abuse the algorithm. I think you should continue with that, instead of trying to bust the algorithm. Think 'the Sam Sulek of language learning'. You mentioned about "I want to" instead of "I should" which I agree wholeheartedly with, not just for Anki, but your videos too. I think you should "want to" engage with your audience in a personal way and produce meaningful, helpful, and insightful content for them, which would be beneficial for you as well, instead of feeling that you "should" have to cash in on the algorithms and attention spans. With time, you will eventually achieve traction.

    Hey Giovanni, I'm a learning TH-camr as well and I have to say I love your content. I've been following you for a while and I love the way your brain thinks. Thanks to your recommendations, I spent dozens of hours studying scissors seven, watching other dramas like 三十二已, getting back into anki, and even creating my own language tracker, and even getting motivated again to learn languages after a huge break. How you use anki, not only the massive size of your streak, but how you use it to memorise what you're interested in, and your mindsets on learning I relate to a lot. On my channel I also focus on cultivating a love for learning and not just learning to get good grades or some kind of external motivation factors like you talked about in this video. In terms of the videos I like to see from you, honestly just hearing your thoughts is extremely valuable enough. You can edit and script if you want, but even the unfiltered videos are just pure value, just hearing you talk about recent things you've learnt, recent things you're working on, and what you've found to be working is valuable to hear. I will say maybe you're right to not talk about what you are going to do, but rather what you've done that worked for you, I made that mistake a few times on my channel and I realised you don't really know what works until you try it. But apart from that, just know that you your dedication to learning is inspiring and keep it up. You've inspired me to start making videos documenting my Chinese learning journey as well, and I'm also thinking about what I should talk about in them. If you want me to give you more thoughts on your TH-cam channel or anything else feel free to contact me!

    Do you make all your Anki cards manually or do you have an automatized workflow? Do you use note taking software such as Obsidian, Emacs, etc.?

    • @GiovanniSmith
      @GiovanniSmith 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I make most of my cards manually, and have some premade decks. When I'm going through online textbooks on Astronomy and Chemistry, reading random stuff on Wikipedia or finding cool quotes on GoodReads, I create those cards manually. For Astronomy, Chemistry and Wikipedia, I rephrase the idea in my own words. For GoodReads quotes, I copy the entire quote, but sometimes remove unnecessary sentences. My premade decks include geography (countries, capitals, and bodies of water), classical morphemes (Latin and Greek roots), and Mandarin chengyu. I also like learning the regions of countries, and since I haven't found a premade deck that has it for all countries, I make those cards myself.

    Thanks for sharing your evolution. I admire your persistence, but wonder if the 'procrastination' was caused by the fact that it was simply not enjoyable - and perhaps because you knew it wasn't the most effective (or important) use of your time. I have enjoyed Anki, and learning in general, a lot more since I stopped tracking streaks. I now consider just showing up (one card!) a success. I almost always end up doing more, but it's by choice, not because I am beholden to a streak. I believe I am retaining more now too. I'm trying to de-gamify almost everything in my life now; I'm looking for fun in the actual learning experience, instead of in the application of the system.

    Uh... have you not tried using Yomitan or Vocabsieve? Makes a card instantly. A native Chinese guy in these comments said that your Chinese idiom example sentences are whack, but I'm going to go one step further and say don't learn Chinese idioms. I can see you've gone monolingual on your Chinese, so maybe your Chinese is really really good, but the payoff for learning idioms is non-existent. They are just too rarely used to justify daily effort (especially with you learning so much else). You'll get far with just 1-2 dozen Chinese idioms.

    After several years using it, I think Anki can be a double-edged sword. If you incorporate too many new cards per day and your anki settings are too strict you will end up having a tone of reviews per day. This might make your anki experience feel like a burden in the long run. Also I find more beneficial building your own deck with content found through immersion, rather than a pre-made deck that may include lousy cards with weird sounding examples.

    For Chinese, why not use cloze sentence cards with just one word/idiom missing I find that this way is the most logical and closest strategy to immersion for flashcards. For example your sentence should only contain the word/phrase you are trying to learn and then the rest of the sentence should all be understandable, therefore making it so the "clozed" part of the sentence should naturally come to you as the rest of the sentence should provide enough context. 如果你不要曬傷,可以{{c1::穿:: _ }}防曬衣 in this sentence for example you learn to use 穿 in context, and bonus learning is by adding a photo of 防曬衣 on the card, two birds one stone. Note, back of the card only has pinyin just to ensure all tones are correct, and the cards should not have any English on the front or the back, as the goal is not to learn translation. As other commenters have mentioned, pre-made decks aren't great, I would also recommend taking sentences from videos or conversations with people, as you guarantee these sentences will sound natural.

    Hey man, I really like how you do, change and retry to make a tailored experience for you. I get your feelings I use premade decks for Latin, the decks are about the book I'm reading so I think it's a good use for them, but about immersion you can get a more seamless experience with a better tooling like Anacreon's mpv script + a good dictionary with anki connect you can make a new card in ~2s (at least with japanese using yomichan) you can also use a bookmark plugin to only make the cards when you finish watching to break up the mindset of "I don't need memorise this word now". Of course there is some drawbacks like needing multiple mpv.conf (you can use a shortcut like mpv - español using cli arguments) and it will flood your clipboard area.

    what i do is i stick to mining from one thing whilst just enjoying the other stuff i consume in my target language. the language comes second in that respect and what matters is the media i'm consuming. i am pretty lucky because there's lots of resources put into learning Japanese that making a card with definition, picture and everything takes 1-2 seconds for me. I think yomitan (what I use for lookups and making cards) is adding support for more languages including Chinese and Korean.

  • @TheGoatConnor
    @TheGoatConnor 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Quite honestly, pre-made decks are the worst possible choice. Since the cards aren't personally made, so there's no connection between you or them. That's the point of sentence mining. Creating words/sentence that YOU want TO LEARN. I have an advice in case you don't wanna break your immersion. Immerse yourself, but mark the things you want to mine, and come back later after your immersion session is over and create Anki cards.

  • @andrew_240
    @andrew_240 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Using premade decks seems like the worst option to be honest. What I do is use vocabsieve to make anki cards out of all of the words that I highlighted in a book while reading. It grabs the sentence, the definition, and pronunciation of the word and makes the card automatically. So it doesn't take me out of the process of immersion and it is in native content that I found while actually immersing.

    • @TheGoatConnor

      I have Vocabsieve on my PC, though I still haven't use it. Yet. Does it allow you to highlight things AKA words, sentence... etc, to mine later? If so, can the same be done for other forms of media? Movies, TV shows, music...etc?
