Not quite. San Leonardo Lake 😁
This looks just beautiful my friend, gorgeous work!
Thanks so much! I appreciate the support
Wow ! Being in the outdoors can be kinda scary I have heard of stories from hunters ! And praise GOD HE gave you wisdom to have the bear spray and your weapon ! Thank GOD HE protected you from harm !
Absolutely, bro! It was an interesting place, no doubt
Enjoyed seeing your experience on the “La Luz trail” ! Thank you Brother for sharing! And Praise GOD for HIS creation!
Thanks bro! I appreciate it; it's awesome out there
How casual is 10-3? I’ve been considering doing the Sandia Crest Trail and stopping there for lunch or dinner, but I’m curious how much I’d stick out as a sweaty backpacker
Oooh, great question! It's casual, we saw people in there with shorts and sandals. Having said that, however, the restaurant manager kinda gave us the stink eye. She also didn't like that we placed our trekking poles up against the window near our table. She asked that we "collapse them and put them in our packs." Probably because they didn't look "proper". Not sure if she was having a bad day or if she didn't like hikers in general. You could probably get away with eating there for lunch, probably not for dinner though. It's a little more formal and you need a reservation
So cool to see you brother and Christin enjoy GODS creation!
Thanks brother! We love exploring the Great Outdoors together
I was always a medium fit, with the new models, seems as though 2022+, I am now a small. With the medium, even on the smallest possible setting, its too big. I have to go small and expand it to the largest setting for a proper fit. Weird.
Wow, yeah that is weird. I've heard of the same issue from other people as well. Hope Gregory gets that addressed
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Definitely epic. Soundtrack?
Much appreciated! Yeah, I got the song off of Soundstripe- "Allex_Black_Water_background_vocals_3_02"
Yo,excellent edition~Epic-)
Thanks a bunch!
Behind the lumbar pad is a removable insert that pushes the pad in and out. Since that's the area that's uncomfortable for you, removing it might change your experience entirely. Or maybe you don't even have that insert and need one. People have remarked that it was missing on their packs. As far as the weight goes, the pack is a hauler and the weight is all in the components present for that purpose, mainly the heavy duty frame and suspension. If all you're carrying is ~25lbs for a weekend hike, the Baltoro isn't the pack to do it with, but as a heavily laden winter or expedition pack it's only rivalled by an external frame design. That said, I guess it can be a finicky pack. I had this exact one, same size, model and (ugly) color, and the fit and comfort was perfect, but I ended up swapping it for a 75. While the 75 is fine, it doesn't "stick" like the 65 did, but feels slightly looser on my back.
Water bladder taken up space also is something I noticed with the 40L. Not sure how other backpacks of this size deal with it?
Wow, that's interesting about the 40L. Yeah, it's a weird quirk and design flaw. It's one of the reasons why I moved up to a 30L from a 20L- was for the space. There is a Gregory water bladder (3D Hydro Trek Hydration Reservoir) that has the dimensions of (12.4 x 9.44 x 3.15 inches) and I wonder if this would provide more room in a pack since it's design is wider? It would be interesting to try out.
Nice
Thanks, I appreciate the support!
Ok you hike where and when it may not get to cold..? But hiking in the shoulder season, in Alaska or somewhere similar. Part of the trip is exposed tundra (Durston won't do) 7-14 days without resuplying, fishing gear and the whole business. That can easy become 25kg (55pounds) plus. Are there any ultralight alternatives? I've seen Hypelight Mountain Gear 70 Litre claiming to handle 27kg. That seem just...unlikely? Can it possibly be more comfortable to carry 25 kg plus backpack with the Hyperligh then Baltoro?
Nah, I've hiked (snowshoed) in cold climates as well. Take a look on my Hiking Amazing Trails playlist in the past year and you'll see what I mean. I don't mind the cold, obviously since I am a skier as well, haha. Yeah, I've heard a lot about HMG as well. Reviews are a mixed bag tho- some say they're super light and wonderful, while others say they're uncomfortable and flimsy. Not sure if they would be more "comfortable" than the Baltoro. Comfort is very subjective... what may be comfortable to someone may be terrible for others. I've also heard great things about Granite Gear and Mystery Ranch, so perhaps those would be worth looking into as well
Maybe I missed it, what are your thoughts on the waist strap? Or rather what do you do with them? I appreciate it when the load is heavy, but when just walking around the city and not wearing the waist strap it digs in on my back.
Good question! The waist strap is alright when I would use it. When I pack bigger loads it helps but not as much as a beefier waist strap offered on bigger backpack models. I think that is one of the reasons I got a 30 liter pack eventually because it distributes the weight better for heavier loads
I have the model older than this you're describing. The brain comes off and gives me a fanny pack. Nice hip belt. Pack is on the heavy-ish side, but I love it.
Oh sweet! I've seen backpacks that have that feature. Sounds like your model was a good one. Thanks for sharing and tuning in!
Hey how is the drive up to the trailhead? I would like to take my motorcycle but im not sure about the road up to it.
It’s not bad, man. A little rocky, but my Ford Ranger 2-wheel drive handled it fine
Lol, the whole point of the Baltoro is the ability to haul heavy loads in great comfort. There are many reasons why your low back was uncomfortable. The way you packed, your own biomechanics, the pack wasn't set up properly, or it's the wrong size.
Haha, well comfort is subjective for everyone. What works for some, may not work for others. Those things can certainly contribute and I believe most of those checkboxes were checked. I even went to great lengths on the last trip to make sure I packed lighter and still had to take off the pack & re-adjust multiple times. Very annoying. I also noticed that most serious backpackers don't use the Baltoro due to it's weight. Thru-hikers definitely don't use it. To carry heavy loads doesn't mean the pack also has be heavy- not to me anyway. Unfortunately, I discovered this after I bought the pack
😂
Thanks for the comprehensive review. I like all the pro points but you're right that the weight and comfort level are downsides for sure. Good luck with your search, which can be half the fun in my opinion. Take care:)
Total downsides. It was very disappointing to deal with as I was expecting great things with the pack. Haha, thanks!
I'm a Santa-Fe native. Mazel tov! Did you start your climb from the base of the mountain or from a path up the mountain?
Nice! The hike was from the Winsor Trailhead at the ski resort
Great video! Nice job flying!
Thanks a bunch! I appreciate it 🤙
Correction: the title at the beginning of the video should've read "Toadstool" and not "Toodstool". Sorry about that 😬
You gave the straps a positive grade. 7 and even an 8. But what you said about them makes them a 4 or 5.
Hmmm... maybe I should've been more specific. The shoulder straps are a solid 8-9 for the comfort and padding. The sternum strap is a 3- 4 and the hose clip (that is a part of the sternum strap system) I would give a 1- 2, honestly
I spent the summer of '09 there, and would hike this trail almost every morning. Loved it! I saw marmot, deer, and a weasel -- and heard wolves. I have the best pix that I have framed. It's a treasure all leading up to the highest peak Mt Wheeler in my home state of New Mexico. Thank you for your awesome video; I love your attitude and energy.
Wow, that's some amazing memories right there! Thanks so much for sharing. I appreciate the feedback also!
Why are the chest straps so bad with breaking on this pack? Also, I’m female with big hooters 😂 and broad shoulders and found the Zulu 30 (mens/unisex) was a lot more comfortable on me than the “women’s” Jade 28, in case other women are looking at this
Good question, haha! Not sure- it's definitely one of the weaknesses with this pack. Didn't have an issue with warm weather... it was only when I was hiking in snowy conditions when the strap became brittle and broke. Thanks for the tip about the Zulu for the ladies 👍
Great video… was this recent?
Thanks! It was from January 27th, 2024
I have a female version of this pack Jade 28l and it's ridiculously comfortable. the sternum strap was ok so far.
That’s great to hear! Gregory have done their homework when it comes to comfort. Glad to hear the sternum strap is still holding up 👍
Great adventure.......thanks for sharing. If its not too much trouble, could you put your elevation gain alongside your total miles in your description....it would allow me a better understanding of the effort put in. As always, enjoy the VIDS.
For sure, no prob! Great idea. I think I've done that in a couple of vids in the past... I just never knew if people were paying attention to the info to include it in the future. Now I know! Thanks for the support 🤙
Can you drive there?
Yeah. The last mile is a little rough but most 2WD vehicles can tread there. From the parking lot it'll lead you to the trailhead. Easy to find
Thank you.
PM is amazing! I love being out there
For sure, ma boi!
Was there a couple days after it opened this year.....Love Santa Fe !! Crazy that you nearly had the slope to yourself.
Yeah, it was early in the season. SSF with only 10 people on the mountain are the best days, haha
I agree with previous two comments. It was your fault.
I go over that in the beginning of the story. Looking back on it now, I would place the blame on the person I was with who unprepared and misguided me. I had no idea I was in over my head. If I were to do it now with the many years of hiking experience under my belt and still approached it the same way, I would agree with you. The Grand Canyon still sucks 😉
What hat are you using? I need more sun protection and like the one you have on 👍
Great question! Thanks, dude. I got it at REI it's the The North Face Horizon Breeze Brimmer Hat. I love it. Light weight, good sun protection and moisture absorbing materials. My only complaint is that you have to "train it" to get the sides to look the way they do in the vid... otherwise it will look like a fisherman's hat 😂
Anothet epic video ! Looks awesome on my 73inch 4k TV. The sound is steller as well running through my surround sound. Thanks !
Wow, very nice! Glad to hear the vids do well on that kind of system. Thanks for tuning in!
I will definitely check this out on my MTB. Thanks for sharing. I ride pretty slow at 63 years of age.
Very cool! Yeah, it's an awesome area. One of my goals is to mountain bike out there sometime.
Promo>SM 😏
Haha 😆
Full shred, bud!!
You know it!
I love this content!
Thanks, Mac!
There is an alternate path up to the ruins that has hand and footholds carved into the stone, as well as petroglyphs along the way. That path is very hidden and sacred, but it was the path used by the ancestors for ceremony in that particular part of the canyon. it is still used for ceremony to this day
Wow, very interesting! Probably better that it remain hidden then. So many cool things to scope out there
My sternum strap broke on my pack also. The easiest way I found to install mine after many struggles was to place the plastic pieces in boiling water. Take it out of the boiling water and slide it on the rib on the shoulder strap. The plastic after being in the boiling water becomes somewhat softer and makes it so much easier to slide back on.
Awful design on that strap! I should've thought about the boiling in water idea; great thinking. Hope you're enjoying the pack overall 👍
Nice vid, just picked one up in 35l version and the sternum strap clip broke on me too haha. Not the best quality on that plastic. Good to hear its holding up well though.
Oh geez!! 🤣Yeah, that strap needs a redesign ASAP. You're right about the quality on it. Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks, great stuff.
Thanks for tuning in!
Good stuff. I used to live in Arizona before there were drones so I appreciate the scenery. I now live in Alaska and we have some other epic scenery here. Here’s my drone playlist. th-cam.com/video/OeLqCSKbqkU/w-d-xo.html
Hey thanks! Wow, Alaska has so much to offer with the Great Outdoors... definitely on my bucket list someday. Awesome channel, keep it up!
@@EpicModeEngaged Yes, the access to the outdoors is amazing here, which is why I moved here many years ago. I have a sailboat which gets me out of town and into remote places. How are you liking the Mavic Mini 3 pro? I've been thinking about upgrading from my Mini 2.
That's awesome. For this vid, I actually used the Mavic 3 Classic, which is an amazing drone. I do have a Mini 3 as well... and I like it. Great footage, better photos. It's also quieter than the Mini 2 @@waderogers
Stunning! I was born and raised in New Mexico and I still consider it home. I go back every chance I get. No landscape anywhere else is a beautiful. Great flight!
Very kind words, thanks! NM has very unique landscape for sure
Nice flight! Beautiful area!
Thanks! Yeah, it's great
Sweet! What do you film on? And what kind of selfie / camera stick do you use?
Thanks! My main camera is a GoPro Hero 11 & the drone is a DJI Mavic 3 Classic. The selfie stick I got thru Amazon… Smatree brand, if I remember correctly
Great footage! I know how you feel when you know you're physically capable of getting to the destination but continuing wouldn't be a smart decision. I'm going to NM in mid-March. I've been looking at this and the La Luz trail. I'm hoping snow won't force me to turn around. Never having been, I don't really know what snow depths to expect.
For sure! I've gotten better over the years to know when to turnaround on a journey. Thanks for the compliment 👍 Yeah, I think both trails will be snow covered still. I did a snowshoe adventure on the Agua Sarca trail in the Sandias last year in April and there was still a good amount of snow... I would imagine La Luz might have more since it's steeper. At least take some micro-spikes
@@EpicModeEngagedThanks for the insight
R A D !
It was very stunning out there!
Natives say pray before entering. And it's better to follow instructions. I heard rocks fall as you entered. Also notice you stepped over a row of rocks in the kiva. Kivas are like temples.. Treat kivas with respect. Just saying
Yeah, most people who aren't native don't know that though and there wasn't signage out there stating any of your suggestions. The only one I saw was at the 1:41 video mark & it didn't have any of your information. Most who explore here are ignorant of this knowledge 😉
Some kivas were used for human sacrifice, not all was well in the mystic magical past as some think
Oh, I am sure. Most romanticize history as their imagination allows, and don't know about how it actually occurred. There are so many ancient mysteries out there that will remain hidden to us@@tylerjones2695
