Addiction Answers with Jack McGeachy, MD

Hi, I'm Dr Jack McGeachy, TH-cam's Addiction Medicine Physician!
There are few fields of medicine more stigmatized and misunderstood than Addiction Medicine and I strive to change that by educating viewers about the scientific facts about this taboo branch of medicine.
Addiction touches almost every life on this planet, either directly or indirectly, but there are few spaces in which we can discuss this subject. I aim to create a positive and safe place on this channel that helps viewers educate themselves about substance use disorder (SUD), its treatments, and how to be an ally for those living with SUD.
Even if you are not personally affected by SUD, mind altering chemicals are a major topic in our society and everyone benefits from learning how they function and their impact on individual lives and our broader culture.

How I Help my Patients Quit Suboxone: Doctor's Secrets
Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) is a prescription medication for the treatment of opioid use disorder and opioid dependence. This video pertains to Suboxone prescribed by a doctor for the treatment of a medical condition.
When prescribed correctly, Suboxone is life-saving. When used as prescribed, it is safe and effective.
However, not everyone wishes to take Suboxone for the rest of their life. Once you've sorted out your life and achieved stability, it is reasonable to consider tapering.
Quitting Suboxone is not easy. If you're unprepared, you're likely to fail. In today's video, Dr. McGeachy explains the factors that influence success and talks about his strategy for tapering patients off Suboxone.
This video should not be construed as medical advice for any particular individual. Speak with your own doctor before you stop taking any medication.

This Subconscious Belief Is So Damaging to Opioid Recovery
มุมมอง 1.1K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
There is an insidious thought that can sabotage your recovery from opioid addiction. I call it a mind virus because it spreads so easily from person to person, but you could call it a meme as well. You probably guessed it already: "sUboXoNe iS JuSt a CrUtCh!" I'm tired of hearing this "thought" and its variations ("You aren't sober if you're on Suboxone," "You're swapping one drug for another")...
Ranking My Patients' Methods for Cheating Drug Tests
มุมมอง 1.5K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Drug tests. Drug tests? Drug tests! What is a drug test? Why is a drug test? How can I beat a drug test? How long does marijuana stay in my system? Is it true that tartar sauce is for pot, or is it actually for meth? Is the timing method effective, or should I stick to abstinence? (Are we still talking about drug tests?) All these questions and more will be answered in today's video! Dr. McGeac...
Is Marijuana Addiction Real? Yes, but...
มุมมอง 35511 หลายเดือนก่อน
Marijuana addiction is real, and I'm tired that no one is talking about this! Let me explain myself. I am tired that no one is talking correctly about marijuana addiction. There are countless bad takes available from both sides of the issue, and it's my mission to cut through the carp to find the truth. The anti-cannabis lobby and Federal Government would have you believe that a single toke of ...
Seductive Poison: Benzodiazepine Addiction is Insidious

TRIGGER WARNING: Detailed discussion of addiction and drug dependence. Talk about anxiety and phobias. Simulated blood. Using benzodiazepines is like signing a deal with the devil. Benzodiazepines, like Xanax (alprazolam) and Klonopin (clonazepam), promise a solution to all your problems in one pill. However, if you read the fine print of the contract, you'll learn that regular use creates depe...
This is How You Run an Addiction Intervention

SPOILER WARNING FOR EPISODE ONE, SEASON SEVEN OF RICK AND MORTY. As an addiction doctor, I know how most conversations about addiction go. Media depictions of intervention tend to be dramatic affairs in which the person with addiction is cornered in a room filled with friends and family, who take turns re...
Is Brain & Liver Damage from Alcohol Permanent?
มุมมอง 311ปีที่แล้ว

We also discuss alcohol withdrawal syndrome, delirium tremens, and basic biomedical ethics...

Preventing The Pain of Precipitated Withdrawal from Suboxone
so true.. and the delayed withdrawal happens.. 2 -3 month later and you're still dealing with it. its a pain to feel normal
AS USUAL WITH VIDEOS ON THIS CHANNEL-No Part 2!! This is getting old.. I BEG for links to part 2 usually, because I’ve done searches and can’t ever find them-not a very cool thing to do-part #2 should pop up right after part #1, as it does on every other channel -but it does not-nor is there a link 👎👎
What is a twitch streamer? Please don’t use these code or slang words- or words for the cool people here if that’s how you want to think of it because some of us are just plain people who haven’t heard of these terms before , so can someone please find that? Thanks if U can 🤗
I get a new prescription for mine each month but I have a zillion bottles of unused medicine because I found out they cause constipation and the half life is way too long for me-I can’t wake up on time of I even take 1/2 a pill!! But I need them-if i don’t have them I’ll be too nervous and not be able to sleep..I can sleep knowing I have the pill in the room-yes I know it’s crazy🥵
WHERE IS PART 2- I’ve spent a long time looking for it. Why don’t you provide a link?
I did a search and can’t find part 23 and whatever anywhere can you please provide a link this is insane. I’ve done several searches and they don’t pop up -the parts that you say follow this one.
Dr McGeachy- Aren’t we doing the SAME THING to our livers if we take buprenorphine or methadone every day?? Please answer and tell a little about it-it’s very worrisome!!
My new favorite channel 😊
I can’t find the Suboxone Forecer video-please put a link here-there was no link in the video.
There aren’t clinics for subs where I live-we just go to a doctor-much easier and you have privacy too. I would hate to go to a clinic bc too many ppl involved so higher fees!
Saving the cash
I was severely injured while serving in the Army (Operation Desert Storm) and I went on a regiment of pain medication, which ultimately tore my stomach up. My doctor recommended methadone once per day, although it did not take all the pain away it was easier on my stomach. It has been over 30 plus years and I do not think there is any options for me, the thought of trying to withdraw after 30 plus years is terrifying plus the pain i would have to endure the rest of my years
I’ve never understood why precipitated withdrawal occurs.. when the subs one kicks the opioid off the receptors and binds to them itself, why doesn’t the fact they are now binded to them stop withdrawal occurring seeing as this is the reason for taking them in the first place. I don’t get how they stop withdrawal when taken on their own but cause it when taken on top of other opioids
Doc, every other doctors videos are so burning. Thank you for the effort you put into editing to keep our dopamine addicted brains paying attention 😂
What do you know about kratom. It totally stops withdrawals from opiates for some, but isn't it just a band aid and another addiction that will eventually need to be addressed? Or does Kratom actually have sone benefits regarding opiate addiction?
i take 2 8mg pills a day of bup.not suboxon and i am taking it for looong time never head withdrawls i sleep like bear i am working 10 years.and i hear a lot of bad stories of subox.i take white pills with 8 engraved on pill doesnt have a taste its like chalk. i know chemicaly its almost same subox.and white bup. but its not.not even close subox is more damaging in many ways.idn what you have and who is the pharma.i talk to my doctor psiho.and she told me this is smartest pill on market and still is leserest evil of the opiod world. Should i be medicated all life?
I've set up two discovery calls with your office and no body ever called me
There is another substance that suboxone is ineffective for. It is 7-hydroxymitragynine when taken in high doses for a prolonged period of time. Even 24mg suboxone didn't touch my withdrawals, and then I had to painfully wean down my 7hydroxy use with help from benzos, then quit 7hydroxy for 2 days and then 12mg suboxone worked. I will soon just switch back to regular kratom, since it is most effective for my conditions, and easiest for me to not abuse, and easiest to wean off of when needed. It's still addictive and leads to dependence, but it is much safer imo.
Hi Doc ... how about Sublocade? Does the patient REALLY just "fade off" and not feel anything? No withdrawals at all?
From my experience. Most insurance companies won't cover sublocade they'll want you to stay on suboxone or subutex. The price for 1 shot is around 2-3k.
I.M IN TAMPA
Thank you for your knowledge
Where in Tampa? I live in tampa and i need a suboxone Dr. Ive been on subs for years through an online dr. I recently relapsed and stopped dosing for a little over a week and im terrified of starting back on it because of PW
See if they'll put you on subutex instead of suboxone. Subutex doesn't have naloxone in it and won't throw you into withdrawals if you start once wd symptoms start. I've been on subutex for years and I personally like it better than suboxone. I get cluster headaches and the suboxone was triggering the headaches due to the naloxone.
If Doc colored his hair and shaved his beard, he’d look all of 30. I wonder if he does that on purpose no offense. Holy crap dude you yammered and yammered and yammered more about the warnings and all the preamble here I am halfway through the video and I haven’t even gotten any advice yet. Thank you anyway?
Hey Doc? Whats your take on KRATOM? In rehab, every fenty users besides myself left before detox was finished. Then some started coming in for "kratom abuse" when they went to that to combat the fenty. But I know nothing about kratom so whats your take?
Wheres everyone complaining about rotted teeth from suboxone? My pal only used films for 2 years and has 3 rotted teeth already.
Thanks for the "depot effect" and info. I used the BERNESE METHOD before on my own after every dr didnt listen, and put me into precipitated every time. I was able to microdose over 7 days or so and get up to 12 mgs of suboxone or so and then able to stop fentanyl. I speak from serious experience, and this video is SPOT ON!!! The prob is, facilities and Drs are still using the old playbook. And they do not listen to patients.
I like this guy. It's pure fact with his insight and opinion thrown in. I would love to have him as my GP.✴
I accidentally shot up bupe once while I was on 30 ml of methadone and all I can say is when it hit me I knew I was in trouble so I immediately called an ambulance I found out the hard way there was nothing they could do except leave me on a trolley all night . By far the worst type of pain and suffering a person can go through.
Thanks for this very interesting video.
Im on 125 mg and its the reason im alive whe wvryone else isnt
My sister says she is too scared of precipitated withdrawal to even try that treatment. She has “friends” who say they’ll never try quitting again after that experience, so I wish all practitioners would consider that as an emergency to avoid at all costs. Waiting for her to get treated successfully is terrifying.
She could try methadone treatment instead.
Hi I’m on Fentanyl right now and stopped taking Suboxone how do I get off the Fentanyl and back on Suboxone or should I ask my Dr to give me Subutex for a while then get back on Suboxone?
I want to share something deeply personal. I had no idea I was using fentanyl while I had been clean for ten years. After having successfully overcome my pill addiction, I thought I could safely take my Suboxone after waiting 24 hours since my last pill. What followed was the worst withdrawal I’ve ever experienced. The thought of going on methadone is something I really want to avoid. Instead, I'm considering taking oxycodone for a week to help ease the transition while the fentanyl leaves my system, and then returning to my Suboxone. I truly hope that this plan works out. The impact of my struggles weighs heavily on me because I fear disappointing my children; it’s as if I can feel their anxiety and pain. I had no idea that my journey would lead me here, especially amidst everything else I’ve been dealing with all at once. Learning secrets about my past and who I am has been incredibly overwhelming. I lost my parents when I was just 28 days old, and I grew up believing my father was an insignificant figure-there were many lies involved. It was my son who uncovered the truth, and it was almost too much for me to bear. I’m reaching out not just for understanding, but for support during this incredibly challenging time. Thank you for listening.
Ibogain hcl was an amazing experience for me
These docs need to feel what that withdrawals feel like before giving these meds
Jump off on 0,1 mg buprenorfin.....should be without any withdrawal symptoms for most of the people. Slow tapering is long, but far the best wey. 🍀🖖🙂🏖👋
I have had multiple ct scans miss my condition. Make sure the doctors scan all of your organs and don’t just give up if they can’t see it. And the “bowel gas” turned out to be fluid leaking from my pancreas. I was born with a rare condition called congenital dorsal pancreatic agenesis. Just found out at 37yo. I do not drink alcohol.
Is this the same thing as ANR in Florida with Dr Weissmann? I see he has helped over 24,000 people be free from addiction but I’m not quite sure how. Is this the same procedure? Thank you!
Nice video ❤
Your video helped me not to go back to methadone I am trying holistic ways to treat my pain...❤
please keep me posted. i too suffer from chronic pain and am looking for help. I am on max bupe, max subox, and now sublocade and none help with pain at all which is why they want me on methadone.
Just taper off, 8mg a day then 4mg , then just 2mg to sleep, then cutoff completely , hike, drink water ,bvitamins , and fight through the missery, kratom for th rreally bad days.
Interesting how you mention how advanced germany chemistry was for europe at the time. Reminds me of the part in Crowleys “diary of a drug fiend” how the main character got his heroin and cocaine from a guy in germany. Considering the author that was probably based on a true story.
I'm thankful the DEA banned benzo and opioid combined use i didn't know how bad and sloppy i was till I was off Valium , I didn't have withdrawal thanks to 145 mg of methadone liquid daily , but I get methadone and adderall which I have never been more productive and the adderall actually decreased my anxiety more than the benzos ever did as well as a counselor on top it's been a great improvement and people can say whatalwanwabt and they do negativity the worst drug is a legal one and that's alcohol I think it's worse than the benzos even ,
I'm going through this now and I thought after the first week I had this.. Now I feel like I am making a mistake 😢
How you doing at 2 weeks?
You got it don’t give up
Why is it that according to statistics alprazolam is the 4th most prescribed medication in the United States but when I needed it I found it impossible to get prescribed and had to source it from the street??!!
4-6 weeks. That's not my experience. I went through a nightmare living alone in my apartment. No doctor or psychiatrist knew much about suboxone. They know how to prescribe it though. The psychiatrist specializing in medications had never met anyone who came off suboxone. I was out of my mind for 8 months. Scary man. The only time I tried opiates was after my 2 surgeries. So when I showed up at a rehab for alcoholism, they out me on suboxone......cause I had prescription pain pills with me. I quit the booze without a relapse. For some reason they never took me off. Its expensive stuff and the prescribing docs get $ for that
Did you really say methadone? Your kidding me right lol
There has to be a much better option/s. Maybe a natural holistic way for not having to use pharmaceuticals
Best Doc I've heard speak on these topics! Im sharing to all in my circle. Great job man.
Well that video was really on beat.
