the thing is the greatest horror movie ever made period. I've worshipped it since i was 12 years old and I'm now 53. no c.g.i., no green screen all practical effects and the remake sucks by the way

I saw this movie for the first time in 1986, when I was 12. I stayed up late to watch it with my mum. I got as far as the dog scene. I had to go to bed, it scared the bejeesus out of me for ages afterwards. Now it has become one of my fave horror/scifi movies of all time. The film that traumatised me as a kid is now among my top 5 best movies. Great reaction btw, really enjoyed it.

The landing, in the best tradition of Gothic Horror, is truly cursed - which only makes sense after you've seen the film. If you do watch through it again carefully, you can notice how, Ash - who is monitoring aspects of the ships condition and performance - spends all his time soothingly calling out how everything is OK, and that peaks and levels are reducing - but you're gifted a shot of his point of view during that sequence and you can see that his monitor is telling him exactly the opposite: numbers are rising. He's, lying. The ship is, not, OK during that descent - its screaming out to them for them to, please, stop: but Ash cares about nothing, except to get them down on that rock, no matter what - to present all those dumb, fleshy, humans to whatever is waiting for them down there....... Beautiful film-making.

I think she thought he'd keep Arlong would keep his end of the deal, because money is the code the Fishman lived by. Remember the card game? Arlong left the villagers alone, as long as they paid his tribute. So there was reason to believe that he would uphold his end of the deal. "We don't lie about money on this crew." --Nami I don't think Nami considered what would happen if Arlong no longer had a source of income. Though 100,000,000 Berry should have been more than enough for anyone to retire well, but Arlong has his sights on ruling the Seven Seas. Coco Village and every other village, for that matter, would never be free, with Arlong in charge...Nami, apparently, didn't consider that or she hoped that he would at least let her people be free. Either way, I guess that was the child in her thinking. The money part, however, was backed up by a pretty good track record. Everyone in this world is pretty true to their code, after all.

The answer is YES The company DID know of the beacon and what it entailed. They decoded the message and the Nostromo happened to be the next ship going back to Earth. So they replaced the science officer that came with them to Thedus to pick up the material they were tugging back to Earth and replaced it with Ash. Ash then rerouted the Nostromo to make sure it picks up the beacon and they investigate it. That way if they came across nothing, it would be no difference as they would not know Ash was a android. But they were pretty sure they were going to find something.

The Thing 1982 is the measuring stick for movies with practical effects! The guy (Rob Bottin) in charge of the effects actually was so stressed out trying to complete the movie and make everything so good, it caused him to have to go into the hospital due to exhaustion and pneumonia! Stan Winston had to step in and finish up the dog transformation effects. It is funny that this movie really has aged well over time, and really makes you appreciate the effort put into making a very memorable movie.

Saw this in the theaters when it opened. You will never look at your dog the same way again.

btw the ending, supposedly childs is the thing, mccready gets found by antarctic rescue and brought to south america. childs ends up infesting people, also supoosedly a fish gets infected and ends up in australia or something and that comnic just gets wiered... not even horror its like some strange soft core thing. dont ask. but there are commics out there not sure if 100% cannon but they exist.

you two are really observant about the mystery behind this. i wonder what you will think of the ending is there still a thing, are they both, is one or the other ?

imagine the creative nastys they could have made if they made a the thing sequel instead of a prequel. plants that attack out of nowhere, spiders that can merge together all kindsa wiered crap, even the wood in yer house can change and comes after you. wich i alwayse wondered why didnt the thing absorb wood or other organic stuff.

Rob Bottin who was the leader of the special effects team did spent one week in the hospital after the film was finished because of exhaustion,Maybe that's why there was never a part 2 ,with today's cgi its not the same quality as this one and a sequel with most animatronics is a hell of a job

why do certain viewers continue to call this a Christmas movie? Maybe they don't understand Christmas vs the season of Christmas. It obviously a "crime action thriller", which just happens to take place during the Christmas Season. It would be the same type of movie, even if it took place on New Years, 4th of July, or on his birthday.

I've seen this movie as a kid and I had nightmares for 2 weeks. Too bad they aren't making movies like that any more :(

The atmospheric lighting isn't very realistic though lol. Submarine movies get that wrong, Navy ones in general, and space ones too...I served on submarines; they are lit up bright inside, like an office building. And if you look at video of the ISS, it's bright too. They don't have things dark. I can only assume movies do that for drama, but it's totally not correct. Star Trek TOS and Star Trek TNG got the lighting right. Star Trek Picard Season 3 was AMAZING, but they had the ships too dark! That would never be done in real life, because you have to actually see where you're going when you're moving about the ship! lol. 🙂 The only exception to that is when a warship is underway at night, or for a submarine, if we have the periscope up at night. In those cases we do "rig for red" -- use red light -- so that it's hard for the enemy to see us from miles away. (you might wonder, why would that matter with the submarine. Well, assuming it's a traditional analog periscope (they have new ones that use digital cameras and fiber optics, on the new Virginia class, so you see through the periscope with a computer screen), the light from the control room could radiate out to sea, so we still do it red, so if somebody happens to be looking in our direction it should be harder to notice us.) 🙂

I have NO idea what you're talking about, as far as some "effect" you saw when they were standing over the ice cube in the Norwegian base. Maybe try a higher bitrate. There was no invisible anything. The dog that changed WAS The Thing.
