Recording King RK35 Banjo Demo
The Recording King RK35 is a well built and affordable banjo that can keep up with and in some cases surpass many higher end banjos. Some serious pickers use these as their daily banjo. Hard to beat for the price.

Stelling Banjo Comparison - Bellflower, Sunflower, Masterflower

Thought I'd throw a short little video together just for grins comparing three different Stellings. One is wearing an original 3 Ply Cooperman rim, one is wearing its original Pass Rim and one is wearing a Pass rim upgrade. I've always leaned towards the Pass rims but now I'm not so sure. 🤔 They are all setup similarly (head tuned to around an A, light guage strings, Aztec 2.4 Bridges, tailpiec...

      @banjoez 92 or 93 on the dial you'll notice a huge difference in power. Try it, you'll like it. Mikey 🙂

      Drum Dials are not all that great for banjo heads. Tap tuning with a tuning app works much better. Most banjos sound best around an A and a tuning app allows much better control. Just lay your phone on the strings, mute them and then tap the head lightly with a pencil eraser. It will show exactly what frequency the head is at. Much more finite and precise than a drum dial. On this particular banjo any tighter and it lost too much bass and became brittle sounding. Every banjo is different. This one was set to an A when I recorded it which equates to about a 91/92 on a drum dial.

      I understand your approach. Every banjo indeed has its own zone and sweet spot. Tap tuning takes too long for me I find it more to be an older style of tuning which if it works for you great. Back in the 70s, all the old timers who had the best sounding banjos all hailed to get that head super tight. I've had the best success keeping my heads at 93 or a little above. Managed to get great power and volume I've needed to cut thru jams. Cheers.

      When tightening my heads I use 2 wrenches across from each other only tightening half of the head and then going in the opposite direction. Tightening in half circles keeps the tension hoop from traveling and keeps it in line w the neck and I keep both wrenches controlled for the same amount. When I get to 93 or so I stop. Then after a few weeks the head will eventually settle and might throw a few more small turns before I play each time. There is concern w most not wanting to tighten single flanges that tight for fear of cracking the flange. Most of my banjos are 2 piece they can handle the pressure better.

    I do like all the banjos but the Gold Tone seems perhaps the best. I am making clawhammer banjos. The wood has a lot to do with sound. Greetings from Arnbak Banjos, a small banjo workshop in Denmark and at TH-cam. 🙂.

Gibson has ZERO USA Employees selling, supporting or servicing banjos and ZERO banjo retail/dealers.

    • @banjoez
      @banjoez 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Head tension can definitely liven up a dull sounding banjo. Try tap tuning the head to about an A. That's where this RK35 is set to. You can also try different bridges. Try a 2.2 gram Snuffy Smith new generation bridge for a more lively tone..

    Hey Joe: Awesome pick'n. ( B-careful with those fingers!) Joe, I have a 1981 Bellflower. Besides the rims being different, Geoff was using Ebonol Fretboards until late 1983. I compared both necks with Ebonol and ebony fretboard on the same banjo. The Ebonol had way better sustain. I could really feel the notes vibrating through the neck despite having not changed out anything except the necks. Stellings are excellent banjos I can personally attest to that. Thanks for the video. GREAT JOB!

    • @Pete-z6e
      @Pete-z6e 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ebonol, got a Whitestar and a Bellflower both Ebonol boards and I love them, something you discover after many years is they don’t burrow out like wooden fret boards and refretting is a breeze, no chip outs at all.

    Great video, thank you for the demonstrations, I have always loved Gibson instruments, but as i decided to start playing again after 30 years, I studied up on these newer models and went with the Gold Tone 0B-250+. I have to say, i was extremely surprised how well built they are along with a surprisingly great sound. Now i just have to break out the WD-40 on these rusty fingers and get to picking 😂. Thank you again, have a great day.
