Kohdok Rants about D&D Beyond for a bit...
Between obnoxious social media, hostile work environments, weird forced updates, and saying the quiet part out loud about how this is all about monetization, the latest edition of Dungeons and Dragons, combined with how Hasbro has been strangling its golden goose for the past couple of years, has ruffled a lot of feathers.
Especially mine.

The Rehabilitation of the Prequel Trilogy
มุมมอง 4.2K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
"The Prequels Are Bad? Okay, Boomer." A common complaint, but in the case of The Phantom Menace, and the years before Clone Wars took off, you really had to be there. Like Darth Maul, the Star Wars Prequels, a wooden Pinocchio of a trilogy, would get some quality supports grafted onto them. But as for the movies themselves, The Farce is strong with them. #starwars #theforceawakens #sequeltrilog...
Finally Realized my Problem with the Sequels

When Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released, it was set in a time gap further from Return of the Jedi than the one ROTJ had with Attack of the Clones, a series of five films and several cartoons which all showed bold innovation in the world of vehicle design. So what did we get in this brand new sequel trilogy set in the far future...? That sick Push it To The Limit remix: th-cam.com/video/X...
Reacting to Jenny's video on WDW Star Wars Galactic Star Cruiser

When Star Cruiser was first revealed (Along with that price tag) I was curious as to how they hoped it would succeed. It did not. Recently, Jenny Nicholson pulled an HBomberguy on the attraction, revealing the experience and its secrets, so I had some thoughts, as well, mostly on the poor showmanship and mechanics involved. And don't worry, i don't do reactions too often, but the Star Cruiser i...

Kohdok rants about Dungeons and Dragons Adventurer Partsworks
มุมมอง 1.2K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
So what happens when Hasbro tries to throw their hat into the Partsworks arena? Well, you get hilarity, ineptitude, and over 22 sets of dice. The only reason I can see there being so many issues with dice is so someone can snatch any issue and get dice. But that defeats the purpose of a subscription magazine, which the piecemeal XL Dice Set is obviously trying to enforce. Heaven forbid an issue...

In fairness, many fourth generation fighters are still in service, still going strong, some 50 years after their introduction. And the DC-3 is still in service, nearly 90 years after its introduction. That said, the design choices in the Disney sequels were clearly meant to cash in on nostalgia, and that's it.

Amen. I thought the same thing when I first watched Force Awakened. I can still remember rolling my eyes when I saw nothing but X Wings and old Tie fighters. One of the things I loved about the old movies was the advancement from movie to movie. All the more advanced ship in The Return of The Jedi was awesome.

The worst offender in terms of technology imo are those fckin STUPID "Bomber planes"... We're in SPACE GUYS! you can't DROP ANYTHING IN SPACE, so why are we risking the craft with the entirety of the payload and THEN throwing the bombs instead of JUST THROWING THE BOMBS!

I honestly think the only reason they wrote it to be 30 years after return of the Jedi was to justify why all the original actors they brought back were that much older.

I never thought about it this way. But that absolutely makes sense. And even IF you concidder that they are kinda on a technological plato (you know, the theory where all their advanced tech is basically handed down from an extinct civilisation which was WAY ahead of what we saw in the movies. (For example using the force to make slingshot manuvers to travel to other systems, means they didn't even need the hyperspace anymore in the first place, and so on.) So that the tech in the galaxy is basically aoce the level of the civilisation that uses it) SOME level or technological progress, even if slow like seen in the prequels to the original trillogie, should have occured.

I understand the frustration and I think it’s a shame we didn’t really get ANY new designs. It’s absolutely something based on brand recognition too. That said, having designs be pretty much the same thing didn’t bother me too much because… that’s what has happened in the real world. Most fielded aircraft are from the ’80s and ’90s, most armed forces use AR-15 or AK-derivative designs. Considering the sequel era is after many long and costly wars, and the forces we follow are comparatively underfunded, it makes sense they would use equipment that’s plentiful and cheap. That said, I would have loved SOME new designs too, and some distinctions where that could have been something reserved for elite forces, and to perhaps let some of the spaceships be more visibly refitted surplus (like, instead of ”just painted black”, have some newer details be black to make it more visibly retrofitted equipment).

If you think about cars or horse carts it's obvious that for 50 years nothing happens and then in 10 years a lot happens. Same with planes (also in this video). And same with spacecraft. Russians are using 70 year old tanks. Especially how they look like. There's some modern tech inside. Not much though. Just paint different letter depending on the decade.

The Tai Interceptor would not have had much more visibility because of the cockpit configuration if relying solely on looking out of that silly window. It's more likely that they used the instrument panels or an AR display integrated into the helmet. A reason for the ship design to stagnate is that FO was an upstart organization hiding in the fringes and didn't have budget for R&D except for Death Star 3 which was likely a relic project of the Empire. The Resistance's budget probably dried up when the Empire fell since there was nobody to resist.

always assumed all the TIE's used a helmet HUD, like the F-35 that just feeds the user some sensor data since even a cut in the wing barely changes the blind spot issue.

To be far the prequel movies and cartoons was an attempt to innovate and that got mixed reviews. Despite a famous fantasy writer coming in to write the phantom menace. I suppose it might be interesting if Stephen King or George Martin was asked to do a spin on the law or Chris Avalon the Fallout Original games writer from the company that did Star Wars Old Republic. Suppose Disney has to balance CGI budgets. Was a real shame they wasted Finn in the latest movies. I mean that had some legs, former trooper, turned good guy, learns the force, struggles and makes a difference in the world. That’s quite appealing.

The easiest way to remove the blindspot of Ties is to just have cameras all over the wings and include some sort of augmented reality headset into the pilot's helmet so they have a 360° view like the wings aren't even there.

One big problem with tech advances is that, in relaity, there woudl be zero 'manned' fighter aircraft but would be AI controlled drones......which takes them back the the Trade Federation......so they have regressed even further than you suggest from the first prequel onwards. This doenst fit too badly as the whole feel of the SW universe is a galaxy in decline. We seem remenants of what used to be a mighty cultured civilization with egomaniacs figthing over the crumbs whilst the galaxy falls to ruin....In that sense you can see the whole thing as an allegory and the lack of advancement making sense in that context.

  • @comradebusman3

And this is why the prequels are better. Because they *aren’t* just like the original trilogy. They try new things, some that work and some that don’t. But at least they *try*. Disney did not want to try, because their biggest motivator was NOT storytelling, but instead marketing, brand recognition, and ultimately money. Because that’s all they ever care about. Most things Disney makes/owns get driven into the ground in the effort to squeeze as much money as possible out of them.

Recently rewatched ep4. It was probably amazing for the time. Nowadays, it is much easier to see the flaws. As for the prequels, they were bad, but got a lot of support later. The sequel got torpedoed and was really depressing to see.

The best subversion of expectations would have been to have the 1st Orders Superiority being in small fighters with ultimately advanced capabilites. Like .. droids piloting them at incomprehensible turn rates, with thrusters able to pushed them around at 360 degree movement, and Gundam-Funnels that float around them shooting enemies in any direction. With some of them made specifically for ramming into and destroying capital ships. Having to take out a huge AI net system that is doing all the calculations at once as a hive mind to coordinate everyhing, or something. Which would make and allow for Poe to really show off some piloting skills.

If they were clever they could have gone with a sort of post Soviet vibe, with the comically overmilitarized old empire having left behind vast stockpiles of tie fighters and the like all over the place. With no major war going on there would presumably have little impetus to modernize. So the sequels could start off with both factions relying heavily on crusty old imperial equipment with different colour schemes and various haphazard modifications for visual distinction. But it's obvious the only vision Disney had was for a shameless nostalgia trip, largely stripped of fresh ideas.

It took you how many years to realize the sequels are just shameless cash grabs, bereft of any soul, that exist purely for the sake of extracting money from diehard "fans" such as yourself? I used to love Star Wars as a child, and was disdainful of the people who mocked it, saying it was for children. Now that they have been made correct, I feel fine that I have put Star Wars away.

I thought it was kinda cool that the prequels gave the good guys what we recognised as the precursors to the ships the bad guys used in the original trilogy. It would have been neat if the sequels did the same, give the resistance the hi-tech advanced ships like tie-interceptors that we saw the bad guys using previously, and giving the new order perhaps some old relics of the former rebellion as if they were struggling to make ends meet and had to rely on what they could. Or something.

You want time gap stagnation? Sure, but set it on the high end of it, and add to it as the conflict goes on. You can't tell me that the First Order, an organisation that was able to create even bigger weapon of my destruction is using surplus armament from start of the Galactic civil war and only retro fits them. I can tolerate them in garrisons in regions out of the main fights. And I'm sorry, did Leia after rebellion won just stashed all the equipment and kept it for worst case scenario? Come on! Even if, she is more competent then that.

Also, forget about episode 8, where a single corporation is benefiting off the war on both sides.
